A good plate of char kuih teow is not an easy dish to find in Klang Valley, especially if you’re used to the quality in Penang.

However, the prevalence and demand of Penang hawker dishes meant that many of them starts to migrate or expand down south, including char kuih teow. That essentially, is how we ended up with Lorong Selamat char kuih teow (original Lorong Selamat CKT review) at Subang Jaya.

This particular stall is located at Restoran Rion USJ at the pretty busy USJ 14 commercial area, a short walk away from the Wawasan LRT station of Kelana Jaya line.

We made our orders for two plates of char kuih teow with its default options (RM 8 per plate).

Some 10 mins later the dish came with all the proper ingredients of prawns, cockles, chives, Chinese sausage, bean sprouts, and of course, egg & kuih teow.

To compare this to the original in Penang, I’d say that prawn size is smaller (they are always smaller here in Klang Valley), and I’d have wished that the kuih teow can be thicker (they’re also always thinner in Klang Valley). Wok hei was pretty decent and truth be told, it’s a pretty competent plate of char kuih teow that should satisfy most people, at RM 8 per plate, it is cheaper than the version in Penang as well, and rightfully so.

For those who are longing for some good char kuih teow and are in PJ/Subang area, this is definitely a worthy option to try out.

I had that in Penang. Waited like forever…and in the meantime, I ordered a lot of other nice food from the other stalls at the coffee shop, so much so that when the char kway teow was served, I was already too full…and no, I did not really enjoy it. I had much nicer ones elsewhere on the island and even in Sg Petani and in KL (an old woman at Jalan Alor before they ruined it by making all those cosmetic changes to the place).

The CKT that I frequent near my office at Aman Puri, Kepong is not bad. But I’m not sure if it can pass your demands. 😛

There are inherently 2 famous CKT stalls on Lorong Selamat Penang. One which has a grumpy auntie frying it and the other stall is run by an uncle who wears a goggle when he fries. The aunty’s version is more wet with the taste enveloping the noodle whilst the uncle’s version is dryer with emphasis more on the prawns. Did you check which one the recipe is from? My fear is that this fella could be running one of the lesser known stalls along that street 🤔😉

Cheong WL: To be fair I do like both versions! Also whenever they “export” out from Penang (my hometown… ) things usually isn’t gonna be the same. Sometimes due to quality of ingredients they can source. Oh well, this one is acceptable for me.

Well knowing that you are Penangite passes the main test. From the look of the texture and color, this Subang outlet seems more similar to the 1st stall along Lorong Selamat ie Grumpy Aunty. To me, she is still the best..taste wise.
