Whenever in Penang, there are always a few things to check off my list when it comes to hawker food exploits. There’s the usual char kuih teow, hokkien mee, laksa, and kuih teow soup, but if you veer just slightly off the beaten path there’s also kuih chap, one of the hidden gems of Penang hawker delight that’s equally as delicious, but super hard to find outside the island.
Kimberley Duck Kway Chap (PJ) Wei Kee (Kuan Kee)
If you’re like me, then I have a good news to share with you. The famed Kimberly Street kuih chap now has a shop at PJ Uptown since late last year. Helmed by the son of the original stall that’s been in operation for some four decades, the name of the shop says “Penang Kimberley Duck Kuih Chiap (Kuan Kee)”, but also says Wei Kee Penang.
The set up is of many typical no frill restaurants in Klang Valley, air conditioned, square tables, wooden chairs, and a menu that has limited mains and a selection of side dishes to choose from.
We went for their signature kuih chap and pork leg rice for lunch, and of course, some side dishes to share.
The kuih chap is just as I remembered them to be in Penang. Packed with all the good stuff such as duck meat, pork intestine, coagulated blood, hard boiled egg, preserved vegetable, pork belly, and more. The “kuih” itself is similar but not entirely the same as kuih teow, both made from rice flour, but “kuih” is a lot smoother and softer, while served as bigger slabs. Everything was cooked to perfection, tender and soft as with most Penang dishes, and you can easily eat this with a spoon as you could with chopsticks. The chili sauce made for very good condiment if you like to have it with a bit of a kick as well.
kuih chap, pork leg rice, 3 layer pork
Similarly, the pork leg rice is similar to the type you’d get from a Thai restaurant. Afterall South Thailand and Northern Peninsular Malaysia aren’t too far apart. The pork leg cut is properly fatty with the skin stewed to a texture that almost melts in your mouth, delicious.
The side dishes of preserved vegetable, coagulated blood, and pork belly are all ingredients that’s also in the kuih chap, but we also had Teowchew Guang Chiang, it’s a traditional beancurd roll that tastes like a cross between yam cake and radish cake with an addition of peanuts, a pretty interesting dish that I found myself enjoying quite a bit.
prices are a bit higher than in Penang, but you do get air conditioning
We went there on a Sunday just past noon and there’s already definitely a crow, service could be a bit faster, but it beats having to drive 4 hours up to Georgetown.
