It’s generally a rule of thumb to eat where the locals do, right? For Perlis, none is more true than this little laksa place by the name of Beng Laksa, runs by.. well, Beng himself.
Beng Laksa is operated from a residence
Laksa in Perlis is of the version that is served in Penang. However, at Beng Laksa, other than the most common asam laksa, you can also opt for lemak laksa, which is essentially the same thing with the usual ingredients of fresh vegetable, onion, fish, but with a broth that is infused with santan (coconut milk) for that extra aroma.
The place for lemak laksa at Penang would be Kim laksa at Balik Pulau.
At Beng Laksa, the only issue is getting a seat (especially weekends). Once you find yourself a place, service is usually pretty fast.
For our lunch, we opted for a mix of both asam & lemak broth for the best of both worlds (RM 5 per bowl. Shrimp paste and cilipadi are available as unlimited add on here, and since I’m a fan of both, naturally I helped myself to quite a healthy dose.
lamak + asam laksa, with cendol to finish
The result was a bowl of laksa that had everything any laksa fan wanted – the aroma, the balanced taste, fresh ingredients, and my favorite bit – the thinner noodle that soaks up those soup very well.
I’m not the biggest laksa fan but I did enjoy this very much.
We also ordered some cendol as dessert/drink after. Those finely ground ice, gula melaka, cendol, and red beans worked wonder in diffusing the effects of cilipadi had on my tongue, will be back for more since conveniently, it’s basically a walking distance from my brother’s place up here.
full menu, and mom whos’ eager to dig in
P/S: Beng Laksa used to operate from a kopitiam before moving to this “new” location.

I guess this is the Penang assam laksa style. I’m not a fan either but will eat and I’ve had some pretty good ones that I did enjoy. The cendol looks good too.
suitaupui: yess the cendol is definitely very good.
Yes! Follow the locals! That’s why I follow you!
Monica: haha thanks I’m honored!
I’m not the biggest assam laksa fan either (as I find most of them too sour) but will eat it once in a while. Isn’t that the thicker laksa noodles? đŸ˜‰
eatwhateatwhere: this is considered very thin liao đŸ˜€
Hmm……Asam Laksa broth + coconut milk, curious about the taste. o.o”
Choi Yen: it’s awesome!
