Many moons ago I wrote an entry about 4 different Klang eats that aren’t bak kut teh, and one of the dishes listed was pohpiah at Eng An. However, at the time, we went to Eng An pohpiah instead of the more famous Tan Kee Poh Piah stall as it was closed, so I had to get back there again to find out what the fuss is all about.

Tan Kee Poh Piah is situated at the right side of the roadside hawker area at Eng An, just a few minutes’ drive from the Batu Tiga Toll on Federal Highway. Parking by the roadside is a bit of a haphazard event, but that’s more of a norm in this part of Klang Valley.
The hawker area doesn’t have a lot of luxuries, but there’s ample plastic tables and chairs with a few fans to ensure moderate comfort level.

Tan Kee Poh Piah is very popular, expect a bit of wait time when you order your pohpiah. The owner/operator usually prepares about 18 pohpiah at one go, which takes maybe 5 minutes or so, but even then you may need to wait for sometimes up to half a dozen batches before your turn.
The pohpiah is laden with plenty of sengkuang, tofu, bean sprouts, slices of Chinese sausage, and even some lard. It was savory and makes for very satisfying snack, I could use a bit more chili paste though (you can ask for level of spiciness).

The leng chee kang here is pretty decent as well, and usually a very welcoming sidekick for pohpiah especially when it’s hot out.
The period between middle of December and beginning of January is often the slowest time in corporate world, which sometimes translate positively in terms of the level of adventure one can have over lunch time.
That may of may not be the reason we ended up at Restoran Sup & Popiah Zaiton Hussin at Setapak a few weeks ago.

Restoran Sup & Popiah Zaiton Hussin is located to the right of Jalan Pahang right after Duke highway on a tiny road by the name of Jalan Puah Jaya. If you blink, you’ll miss the road, in fact, it looks more like a alleyway than an actual road.
The actual restaurant itself is not any different from the typical Malay or Mamak restaurants, it’s hot and noisy inside with ceiling fans that aren’t overly effective, and a few “alfresco” tables on the outside that everyone wants to sit.
You may have to wait for a table to be freed, but it’s worth it.
If you’re here, you are most likely going to have soup and popiah, but they also serve mee goreng, nasi goreng, and so on.
As for the soup, sup kambing (lamb soup, RM 6) is the most popular, but you can also go for ayam, daging, perut, burung puyuh, ekor, torpedo, lidah lembu, lidah kambing, kaki, etc. Prices ranges from RM 4.50 to RM 7.50 per bowl.

I tried the sup lidah (ox tongue) and absolutely loved it. Packed with over a dozen pieces of sweet, succulent ox tongue in those heavily spiced broth, it was fantastic! The guys loved their sup kambing as well.
To go with those delicious soup, you can have a plate of rice (with some curry and other vege if you want to), or, as most people do here, a set of steamed Indian bread. Either way, you won’t go wrong.

Then of course, there’s the other half of the shop’s name – popiah. Well, the popiah here is the slightly wetter type with sengkuang and tofu as the main ingredients with some kunyit as the main flavoring. The sweetish and slightly spicy sauce is then poured on top.
I find the popiah to be rather average and probably could use thinner skin, but still pretty satisfactory nonetheless.
In any case, if you like some awesome soup, this is a must try place in my book.

Whenever food and Klang are mentioned in the same sentence, the topic of bak kut teh is often inevitable, however, Klang offers more than just bak kut teh. Lets look at four different places you should check out if you’re at Klang, just in case you’ve just had your bak kut teh the day before.
Fatty Mee Hoon Kuih at Taman Berkeley
Fatty Mee Hoon Kuih at Taman Berkeley is the most famous pan mee restaurant in all of Klang, the version here is slightly different from those served at other part of Klang Valley, instead of chilli paste you get chilli padi and soya sauce, and lettuce is used as vegetable of choice.
Expect long wait time as each bowl is cooked individually. Starting at RM 3.50 per bowl, this place offers great value too.

Peng Heong Hakka Paikut, love their sour & spicy vegetable
If pork ribs fancy you, Peng Heong Hakka Paikut will surely deliver. The corner shop not far from the central bus station at Klang offers one of the most delicious and succulent fried pork ribs you can find anywhere.

Their menu is quite extensive as well, I especially love their sour and spicy vegetable soup that hits all the right spots. Asam fish and pork stomach soup are two other dishes worth checking out as well. However, their bak kut teh is subpar, so don’t waste your time or stomach space for that.

you don’t have to go to Melaka for delicious pohpiah
Melaka is famous for many hawker delights, with one of my favorite being the pohpiah at Jonker Street, mainly due to it’s pork lard infused ingredients. So you can imagine I was more than happy to find out that you can find very similar pohpiah right at Eng Ann Hawker Centre, Klang, which neighbours Taman Berkeley.

There are two pohpiah stalls here, and both are comparable in taste. The ingredients include pork lard and lap cheong, which really gives this otherwise simple snack an extra kick. If you like the Melaka version, this one won’t disappoint.

made-to-order black sesame glutinous ball with ginger soup
For after dinner dessert, head to Taman Berkeley again for some freshly made black sesame glutinous ball in ginger soup. This classic Chinese dessert Kedai Kopi Tech Le is pretty much made to order here with a choice of black sesame or as the ingredient. This stuff will clear up your sinus immediately. I love it.

Popiah, or commonly known as fresh spring rolls in most other parts of the world, has always been one of my favorite breakfast dishes. It’s easy to eat, contains an assortment of vegetables, usually pretty economical, and doesn’t take a long time to chew down.
It is a dish that is pretty common in Penang, but unfortunately, good ones are hard to come by in Klang Valley, so I was pretty happy when I finally sampled from this one from Imbi market.

Sister’s Crispy Popiah is situated some 10 meters away from the famous Ah Weng Koh Haianese Tea. It has been operating at the same spot for years, and business in the morning is rather good. There’s almost always a small queue right in front of the stall, behind the operator that always move in a super brisk pace.

A single serving goes for RM 2.20, one is never enough as the only dish, but suffice as a side dish if you have something else to go along with, like a plate of wantan mee or some breakfast toasts for example.
Other than the popiah skin, chili paste (optional), and sweet sauce, there are at least five other ingredients packed into this spring roll, including sengkuang (yambean), cucumber, carrot, and some absolutely fantastic crispy bits (I have no idea what they are).

The normal serving is a little on the drier side, but if you prefer to just ask, you can have it with a bit of those sengkuang soup to wet them as well (which is closer to Penang style). The popiah skin holds up well while not being too thick, the mixture of crispy ingredients and really soft, well cooked sengkuang makes for a well balanced contrasting texture that I really like.
A pair of popiah for breakfast? I can do it this any day.

The first time I had pork noodle at Sun Sea kopitiam at OUG was many years ago, it was probably a time before this blog was started, which placed it at.. say, at least 6-7 years ago.

Yesterday I went there again and had the pork noodle for the second time. To be honest, I actually wanted to try the curry mee at the same restaurant (Penang style with coagulated pork blood), but it we were a little too late. So naturally, I picked the pork noodle as my alternative.

We ordered a bowl of kuih teow soup, and another dried meehun + mee pork noodle.
The stall was plenty busy, but with 3-4 cooks and over half a dozen people working, the pork noodle didn’t take too long to arrive (as opposed to the basically one man show at the famous pork noodle at SS3 Kean Fatt).
Like the night time counter part at restaurant Hong Cha located just a stone’s throw away, the pork noodle here comes with not only the essential porky ingredients – liver, pork slices, minced meat, intestine, and lard, there are also the inclusion of some prawns and squids.

While I find that the seafood does add to the flavor of the soup, and the overall taste of the pork noodle too was rather good, I still think that the Kean Fatt’s version is just a little more flavorful and more “kao”. Then again, over here there’s the choice of having the dry version (that salted minced meat on top was superb), and the huge upside of being served quite a lot faster. (never go to Kean Fatt at peak hours, after 2 p.m. would be best)

In addition, we also ordered two poh piah (RM 4) as a side dish from another stall, it was absolutely average and even slightly too dry. It was light years away from my favorite poh piah of all time at Jonker Street in Melaka, and quite a lot less tasty than the one at the pohpiah stall at Lucky Garden where you can also find very yummy laksa Sarawak.
