A few days ago my cravings for Thai food suddenly hits, and since we’re not out of this whole Covid-19 wood work just yet, I was giving myself some dining criteria – somewhere that’s not crowded and somewhat open air. A bit of Google-fu later, we found ourselves at this relatively new Thai restaurant in Bandar Baru Klang by the name of Baan Korat.

Baan Korat is operated by a couple, with the chef (the wife) being a Thai. Just by that alone you know you’d be getting an authentic experience, right?
Well, luckily, yes!
The restaurant offers Thai steamboat, as well as a selected number of mainly street dishes to go with steamed rice (see menu below). The ambiance is not unlike those shops you find in Hatyai.
For the two of us, we ordered a bowl of tomyam seafood (RM 13.90), a Baan Korat special (RM 13.90), a couple moo ping (pork skewer, RM 3 each), and a serving of their Thai fish cake (RM 10). I had originally wanted grill cockles (RM 13) or grilled stuffed squid (RM 15) but unfortunately those were not available during our visit.

As for how the food tastes, well, the two soup dishes were top notch. The tomyam was full of flavor without having to be super spicy. The Baan Korat special has a pork broth that carries a strong hint of crushed peanut taste to it, and laden with seafood, egg, as well as minced pork. I thought it was quite delicious as well.
As for the two side dishes, I’d say moo ping is a must order for the fans of pork, and those fish cakes .. well, probably best be skipped even if you’re a fan of fish cake, or especially if you are one..

Overall though, this is shaping up to be one of those places I would definitely love going again. Happy food hunt and stay safe!
Thai food is probably the most matured international cuisine in Malaysia, we now get most everything Thailand has to offer, thanks to our proximity to the nation of origin, as well as our generally rather similar taste buds.
If you’re not far from Setia Alam area and love a good meal of non-halal Thai food, then perhaps Thai Syok Seafood Restaurant should be on your short list.

Located in the middle of the busy commercial area within Setia Alam, Thai Syok takes up a couple units of shop lots. The place gets quite busy over on weekday lunch hours and especially so during weekend dinner sessions. If you get there later than 7 or so, expect to wait for a table, or perhaps even get seated outside ala mamak style. I guess you can also call it alfresco dining to be more classy.

I’ve so far tried quite a few dishes over two different dinner sessions at Thai Syok, with rather favorable experience overall.
The tomyam (RM 15.90 – RM 39.20) is served in the old school hotpot, properly seasoned, and carries quite a kick. The small portion should suffice for up to 4 pax or so.
Their lemon steam fish (siakap RM 44.50 – RM 59.30) is a great substitution if you don’t want to go with tomyam, The fish is fresh, and you get the soup base that’s properly sour, spicy, and very appetizing. Just thinking of this soup makes my saliva going.
If you are into spicy lemak food, prawn in coconut milk (RM 40) should fit the bill. This dish is rich, spicy, and flavorful.

Think raw seafood is only associated with sushi/sashimi? Then you gotta give the raw prawn salad a go (RM 22.20). Over here they serve it with a slice of bitter gourd, which I think accentuate the sweetness of the prawn quite well. My first time having this particular dish was at Kepong’s Thai Village, and subsequently at Khun Thai, Klang. I’ve been ordering this dish whenever available these days.
The moo ping (grilled pork satey, RM 12 for 3) is Yuki’s favorite, and nobody rejects the order either as we all enjoyed it as well, but I would also like to try out some of their other yakitori dishes next time (such as prawn, basil pork, orchicken wings).

Perhaps due to the amount of crowd or their extensive menu, my experience was that we always had to wait for quite a bit before dessert is served. That being said, their red ruby (RM 6.90) is on point.
I’m quite sure this is a restaurant that’ll repeating business from us for time to come.
Last week week while driving around exploring places for dinner around Klang Parade surrounding, we chanced upon a newly opened Thai restaurant by the name of Mae Porn Tom Yum Goong located just by the road next to the mall, and since Thai cuisine has always been one of our favorites, we went in to take a look.

On first look I already have a positive feeling about the place. The almost-kopitiam style restaurant is air conditioned, clean, and with the parts of the walls filled with racks of Thai groceries. There were also staffs happily chatting in Thai language. Unlike Japanese restaurants with local staffs greeting you in the only line of Japanese language they know, over here they use Thai as their native language to communicate, not to give you a false sense of authenticity.

Anyway, the “menu” they have is a bunch of photos on the wall (look below), with many dishes cater to individuals, but there are also those for sharing. Each priced at between RM 6-8, great value for money even for Klang.
We’ve visited this place twice now and came away really satisfied.
For salads we’ve tried yam leb meu nang (chicken feet salad, RM 7), nam tuk (pork salad, RM 7), and yam goong (prawn salad, RM 8). Strong seasoning and definitely appetite opening, they go well with rice as well. The only “issue” we may have is that the chicken feet were cut in bigger chunks than what we’re used to so that took a bit of getting used to.

The tom yam goong (RM 8) may not have big prawns or loaded with big chunks of seafood but certainly tasted every bit a bowl of authentic tomyam should.
We also tried their kuey chap (RM 7) and opted with no noodle since we had it with rice, the pork was tender and of course they also serve coagulated pork blood, a definite plus.
Lastly, moo ping (RM 3 per stick) certainly makes for good beer food, as any properly seasoned and grilled fatty pork should.
We’re certainly going to be back for more, the second trip already seen the place being filled pretty good with customers, I think it’s here to stay. Give it a try if you love some good authentic Thai food that also serves pork. Other alternatives are Go Thai SS2, Lai Thai seksyen 17 (changed name since), and Surasit TTDI.
