Where do you go when you’ve got the munchies at 3am in the morning but don’t feel like heading to yet another mamak restaurant that serves spicy food and nothing else?
Well, if you’re a fan of Teo Chew porridge, you’re in luck, there are several such places that offers nightcrawlers a bowl of warm congee with dozens of different dishes to go along, one of such places is Restoran Peng Hwa at Old Klang Road.
Peng Hwa Restaurant at Old Klang Road
Situated between Pearl Point and Scott’s Garden on the busier part of Old Klang Road, Peng Hwa is one of those old school restaurants offering porridge and rice that operates some 18 hours a day (11am to 5am). I mean, no one really eats porridge or mixed rice with pre cooked dishes for breakfast, but for any other meal, you’re covered.

Like most such type of restaurants, Peng Hwa offers classic dishes such as pork intestine, soya sauce chicken, Chinese sausage, mushroom, fried vegetable, luncheon meat. salted duck egg and so forth.
They tasted pretty good too! For the three of us on a late night supper a week or so ago, we spent about RM 8-9 per person including drinks. Not the cheapest supper nor the healthiest, but I’d say it beats mamak restarant any day.

Economy rice (or mixed rice) is a dime a dozen, you can find them at every 3rd kopitiam in the country. More often than not, they are just what the name suggests, an economical way to have a few dishes and rice to fill up your stomach.
In another word, they are usually not exactly exciting.
That’s the run off the mill economy rice place, then there’s this Baba’s Nasi Lemak place at SS2’s wai sek kai.

While the name is a bit misleading, this super busy stall is in fact, closer to an economy rice outlet than a nasi lemak place. There’s those ‘buffet’ containers with various different dishes, and more people actually order usual steamed rice instead of nasi lemak.
So why is this place special?
Well, the short answer is that it’s super delicious!

There are usually over 2 dozen dishes to choose from at Baba’s nasi lemak, and they aren’t always made with very economical ingredients. Here you’ll find some of the more “up market” dishes like “kao yok”, prawns, steamed fish, and even mantis prawns.
I’ve tried more than 10 different dishes from there thus far, and every single one of them was superb. Never too salty or too sweet or too anything, it was always just right.
As the name suggest, the cooking style is closer to Nyonya cuisine, which means you get a good mixture of spicy dishes and those prepared with traditional Chinese food methods.

The operators also seems to take their food very seriously. Every dish is meticulously placed on the plate, with appropriate amount of sauce on the rice. I mean, when it looks good, you’ll feel more appetizing too kan? Just check out the photos above for some examples.
The down side is though, with the amount of dishes offered and knowing that they’re all super tasty, this economy rice is often not very economical for us. Picking 4 good dishes with rice can sometimes come close to RM 10 per plate.
Yah, it can be a bit pricey, but we kept going back, and judging from the rather long queue every time we were there, quite a lot of people shares the same sentiment. Maybe you should give it a try too? 😀

On a fine Tuesday, my colleague Sheng Huah came over to my corner and asked if I wanted to join a couple of them for dinner on Wednesday, and promised something different from the ordinary ‘siu chau’ at Wisma Cosway.
I am constantly looking for new things and places to eat, so why not?
Restaurant Jiang He at Jalan Padang
We took a good 10 minute walk from Jalan Kia Peng, passing Pavilion, Starhill Gallery and arrived at Restaurant Jiang He right next to smallish Fei Har Ching Ser temple at Jalan Padang (directly across Bintang Palace, the infamous pub/karaoke.)
On normal days, restaurant Jiang He serves chap fan (Chinese mixed rice), but every Wednesday, they have this special fried chicken.

The photos here are taken over the span of two separate visits. Both times I ordered the excellent fried chicken, with it’s crispy crunchy skin and succulent tasty meat that is quite irresistible, I suspect the marinate involves belacan. Definitely worth a try if you’re at the area. Thumbs up to Sheng’s recommendation.

Their char siu (bbq pork) and siu yok (roast pork) were not particularly impressive though, I suggest leaving more space for the chicken instead. However, if you like potato, don’t miss their wedges, they’re slightly burnt and very good!
The pricing at Restaurant Jiang He is pretty reasonable. Drumstick (actually almost a 1/4 chicken) chicken rice costs about RM 7.50, while thigh version goes for around RM 6 or so.
Remember though, the fried chicken is only available on Wednesdays.
