Of the 400 some bak kut teh places in Klang, one of the most unique offerings of them all has got to be Ah Tao Seafood Bak Kut Teh at Teluk Pulai, for this is the very place that the whole idea of having seafood in bak kut teh came into fruition… I think.

If you’re looking for a sign that says “Ah Tao BKT”, you won’t find it. The stall is located within Restoran Beng Heong, on the same row of shop houses also include the original Teluk Pulai BKT situated in a stone’s throw away. Parking is usually not a very challenging task, but they do sell out by 10am or so on weekends, so getting there early is a must if you want to avoid disappointment.

While they also serve “normal” bak kut teh in clay pots, the unique selling point here is their seafood infused BKT. If you simply go with seafood, they’ll include big prawns, lala, sea cucumber, fish fillet, and perhaps squid together with your choice of pork meat (I usually go for “tua kut” aka big bone, or “kahwan”).
Alternatively, you can also opt for crab, or just lala, just prawn, and so forth. I tend to think anything involving shells work best, such as lala, crab, or prawns.

To make the herbal soup “compatible” with seafood and partly to avoid unwanted seafood smell, the soup is made spicy with quite a fair chunk of chili padi, so what you have then is a very unique taste of spicy bak kut teh. I love it, it was like BKT on steroid.

I’ve only been to Ah Tao a couple times since, but I figure there’ll be quite a few more future visits.
If you’re from the other side of Klang/Shah Alam or prefer to have this for dinner, Klang Coast at Bukit Tinggi serves a pretty decent version of seafood bak kut teh as well, supposedly manned by the apprentice of Ah Tao.

I’ve read somewhere that there are over 400 bak kut teh restaurants just in Klang alone, so looks like there’re more work to be done in sampling as many of these comfort pork dishes as I can, while I can!
Just a week ago, we went over to Jalan Teluk Pulai and ended up at the original Restoran Telok Pulai Bak Kut Teh for a pretty satisfying brunch.

For the uninitiated, Teluk Pulai BKT shop at Taman Intan (blog post from 10 years ago), the commercial area right after Federal Highway Sungai Rasau toll with the big Maybank building, is perhaps one of the most famous bak kut teh restaurants in Klang.
For many who aren’t from Klang, my younger self included, the first taste of proper “Klang BKT” often equate to this particular brand, so I thought the original shop is worth a visit.

Teluk Pulai BKT is located at the middle of the row of shop lots that’s flanked by two other BKT shops at each end. Seating is a combination of indoor & semi-outdoor arrangement, and like most BKT establishments in Klang, there’s plenty of kettles with hot boiling water for tea making purposes stationed within.
For the two of us, we ordered a 1.5 portion (yes you don’t have to go full 2 portion) of clay pot BKT with kahwan (near leg joints), small intestine, and pork stomach. There’s also dry version if you’re into that.

To be honest, it tastes pretty much exactly like the branch at Taman Intan, the soup base has a pretty decent herbal tone and well balanced, with the meat soft and the fat very tender. I thought the small intestine was very well done as well, stuffed within itself multiple folds. There’s also tofu pok, button mushroom, and a bit of green presence in the clay pot, that’s the beauty of Klang BKT isn’t it? Plenty of different presentations and choice of ingredients.
For condiments, you get garlic, chili padi, and as much fried shallots as you want to pour over the oily rice, which made for a pretty satisfying brunch overall.
They’re also very generous in giving customers more soup to top up the clay pot, so if you’re those who love slurping down that delicious herbal nectar, this would not disappoint.

Let’s get back on the project of trying as many bak kut teh as possible in the birth land of this amazing dish – Klang. Today we take a look at one of the small guys – an unassuming small corner restaurant near Klang Parade by the name of Restoran Xin Lai Hing.

We chanced upon this relative newcomer to the bkt scene in Klang while visiting one of our regular Vietnamese kopitiam at the area and thought to give it a try. Interestingly, in addition to bak kut teh, they actually also serve a small selection of Vietnamese dishes here, though we did not have an opportunity to sample those.

For the two of us, we ordered a 1.5 portion of clay pot bak kut teh with a mixture of kahwan (around the ankle) and intestine. The dish comes with piping hot soup that is pretty strong in herbal aroma with a slight bitter note which I find quite pleasing. There isn’t much peppery note which may or may not suit individual taste but I do find it pretty good.
The meat is probably softer and more tender than most I had, and you can definitely cut it with a spoon, quite delightful as the fatty bit melts in your mouth. I also like the fact that the small intestine is stuffed with even more intestine, perfect for offal lovers.
There’s some tofu skin and a bit of tofu pok as well as few leaves of fresh vege in the soup, enough to give it a false sense of balanced meal, who cares?

If you’re up to some really soft and tender pork, this is one that won’t disappoint.

Let’s continue with another Klang bak kut teh review since I said I was going to make it a bit of a mission to go to as many different bak kut teh in Klang as possible. So here’s BB Bak Kut Teh Garden at Bandar Baru Klang, located close to Bukit Raja Jusco and one of our favorite tai chao places in the area – Da Tuan Yuan.

BB bak kut teh garden often have moderate to even rather low review, and personally I think a lot of it has to do with how the place looks like. The setting is almost like a modern food court, with pictures, banners, and a menu that illustrates the price and exactly what you’ll be getting very clearly. This runs in contrast to most old school BKT places that expect you already know what you want.
Additionally, they also serve some non-BKT dishes, such as steamed fish, fried vegetable tofu, sea cucumber, and so forth. All of which gives this place a “less authentic” look.

But to be perfectly honest, I actually found the BKT pretty decent. A bowl (RM 10.50) or clay pot (RM 12.50) is right around the average asking price, though some reviews may suggest that this place is a little more expensive than others.
On our visit I had kahwan (right around the leg joint with plenty of fat & tendon) and intestine. They were properly tender and the soup too had a strong herbal flavor, tho perhaps not as complex tasting as some. I actually enjoyed it.

So don’t let the look of a place fools you. If a BKT place can survive in Klang, they’re usually pretty capable when it comes to taste. If you keep an objective mind, you’ll often not be disappointed.

Well, I did mention that I am going to try as many bak kut teh places in Klang as possible, right? So here’s another “less famous” places I had the chance to visit several weeks ago – 大肥婆肉骨茶, or LYL FOOD CORNER, which is completely not what 大肥婆肉骨茶 translate to at all.

The bak kut teh restaurant is located somewhere in between the two branches of the more known establishments – Samy & Ah Her, and Mo Sang Kor. It is a single shop lot basic set up, which is similar to probably 90% of the Klang BKT restaurants.
I happened to be the last customer of the day, but lucky me, they happened to still have my favorite cut of the meat available – kahwan.

The single serving came in claypot with actually rather generous amount of soup, it carries a pretty strong herbal taste with a hint of “tong gwai” taste which I enjoyed. As with most Klang bkt, the meat was tender, and fatty part of pork soft enough to to be cut by the spoon.
大肥婆 did not disappoint actually, it wasn’t as strong tasting as the other two, but the extra amount of soup should cater for those who enjoys slurping down BKT soup. Oh, there’s also fried shallots, which is always good to go with BKT.
