Several weeks ago, a bunch of us went for another lunch session that’s worth sharing, especially for those who work or stay near the East side of Klang Valley – Warisan Rasa Kuale (Ribu Ribu) at Medan Selera Taman Keramat. A place that serves up quite a good selection of local Malay dishes, and some awesome ikan bakar to boot.

Warisan Rasa Kuale is located at the food court right opposite Sapura building on Jalan Enggang at Taman Keramat. The stall itself is deep inside the food court and not visible from the street, you’ll have to walk some 20 meters in.
The food court is your typical medan selera with tables covered in laminated plastic, and plastic chairs that are usually good enough to barely hold the weight of average Malaysian. Hygiene isn’t top notch, but was acceptable.

The selling point of this stall is the choices of ikan bakar and the dishes they serve. There’s no less than half a dozen different fish to choose from, including siakap, tilapia, kembung, keli, bawal, caru, patin, and even salmon! Additionally, they also have grilled lamb and grilled prawn.
There’s also over a dozen different ulam to choose from. You want pegaga? petai? cherry tomato? bitter gourd? They’re all here.

Other than those grilled stuff and green stuff, there’s also a good selection of other dishes. There’s fish curry, sotong, several types of masakan lemak, there’s kangkung belacan too.
Overall the food quality was rather good, and we liked that they serve three different types of sambal with ulam. I particularly enjoy the ikan bawal bakar (RM 20) with it’s fatty flesh, as well as their grilled lamb (RM 7). Those are some of the must-order dishes if you’re there.

If you’re up to some awesome traditional Malay lunch not far from Keramat/Ampang area, this is quite a decent place to check out. Prices are quite reasonable for what you get too.

This is one of those write-ups that was somehow kept in the draft mode for way too long, but never late than never, and this is especially true when it comes to awesome food that can be enjoyed by everyone – so today, let’s talk about Ikan Bakar Adnan bin Hassan in Penang island.

To start with, you have to appreciate the location where Ikan Bakar Adnan bin Hassan is located. At the tail end of the island, you’ll have to travel for probably close to 45 mins to 1 hour from the heart of the island to reach this place, depending if you actually get lost or not.
The restaurant itself is of a medan selara sort of set up, and Adnan bin Hassan is the corner shop offering the most selection of any stalls there.

There are usually quite a few selection of seafood to be chosen from, ranging from siakap, kerapu, bawal, ikan merah, janahak, udang, and ketam. Price list is clearly stated on the wall as well, which is always helpful. The fishes are supposedly supplied by local fishermen.
better get your share before your friends finish them all
I liked the way they fish is grilled here, split down the middle with ample sweet and positively hot sambal plastered within the center, and more spicy & sour sambal served on the side just in case you can and want to handle more hotness. The seafood was plenty fresh when we were there as well.
Squid from the neighboring stall wasn’t nearly as satisfying though, so choose your poison carefully.

Wherever there are office workers, there’ll be mixed rice stalls, and often time it is very difficult to tell them apart in terms of quality. This is especially challenging at places like Wisma Sentral with a number of different stalls catering to wage earners working at KLCC and surrounding area.

But after years of being here, I think I’ve found my favorite halal food stall in the building – the Kelantanese place at the far right corner on ground floor.
On the surface, this place doesn’t look very different from the other half a dozen different stalls, but on closer inspection, you’ll notice that there are subtle differences.

Firstly, the selection of ulam is excellent. There’s always at least about a dozen different raw vegetable to choose from that pairs well with some the few choices of sambal. This ranges from cucumber, tomato, long bean, lady’s finger, to petai, ulam raja, and more.
Furthermore, they also have a pretty big selection of ikan bakar freshly made just prior to lunch hours. With patin, kembung, keli, and a few other choices available.
However, my personal favorite from this stall has got to be their solok lada – this unique East Coast dish is basically a stuffed green chili with a mixture of fish & coconut insert. If you think yong tau foo is good, this one will blow your mind. I love it!

So if you’re around KLCC area (or happen to work here), do check out this stall, it may not be the cheapest option among the few, but it is definitely the one I enjoy most.

A few days before bulan puasa, we had several rounds of short lunch excursions, one of which was the famous asam pedas place at Man’s Cafe in Kampung Baru. Since Ramadan has passed, I thought it’s appropriate to write about this place as it is back in business for lunch again.

Asam Pedas Kampung Baru, or Man’s Cafe Selera Kampung
Located at the “entrance” to Kampung Baru from Jalan Tun Razak as you turn into Jalan Raja Muda Musa, the little eatery is yet another zinc roofed structure that has seen better days as a residence. Dining tables with plastic chairs are scattered about the former porch and living room of the house, with a couple rows of delicious looking dishes presented at around the entrance.

Like most Malay mixed rice places, there’s a pretty good variety of choices here – starting from over half a dozen choices of ulam, to kari ikan, ayam goreng, several types of sambal (including tempoyak aka fermented durian), telur dadar, sambal chili, terung chili, and good mix of ikan bakar.

While those dishes we tried were all pretty good, the highlight of lunch was their signature dish – asam pedas. It is basically curry cooked with salted vegetable that’s not unlike the Chinese spicy vegetable (a good version can be found at Peng Heong Hakka Paikut Rice in Klang), but cooked with fish instead. It was sour, spicy, and absolutely intoxicating.
If you’re up for something that can jolt your senses, Man’s Asam Pedas cafe is one of those places to check out.

A couple weeks ago we had yet another “you’ve got bonus so you have to belanja” session with my colleagues, and this time around our destination was Puti Bungsu Batam at the nearby Lorong Yap Kwan Seng, which technically is close enough you can walk to from KLCC, but obviously we drove there.

The restaurant is visible from Jalan Yap Kwan Seng itself, and located just a stone’s throw away from the Las Vacas. It is also clean, airy, and has a simple yet somewhat tasteful decoration.
Oh, the parking lot is good enough for perhaps half a dozen cars, get there early if you drive.

Puti Bungsu claimed to serve Authentic Padang food, and they have quite a big selection of dishes. There’s ikan bakar, a few types of ayam (including their famous ayam pop), kepala ikan, tunjang (beef tendon), and more.
Additionally, they also have a relatively big menu on drinks, and like any self respecting Indonesian restaurant, they have jus alpukat (avocado + chocolate), which is a must-order for me!

For the nine of us, we ordered up quite a feast. We had tunjang, fish head curry, daging salai (smoked beef), sambal cili (green chili sambal), ayam bob, terung (brinjal), and some vege. All these to go with steamed rice, since we’re after all, Asian.
The dishes were pretty good actually, apart from daging salai which I thought was slightly too tough to chew on. The tunjang almost as good as the version at Kampung Baru. We really liked it.
good food with great company
According to Syeka, the colleague who belanja all of us, the meal turned out to be almost RM 40 per pax, inclusive of some pretty fancy drinks we had. It’s definitely not cheap, but for the ambiance and location, not out of expectation.
Puti Bungsu is certainly a pretty decent place for a bit of a get-together, and one that happens to serve good, authentic Padang food. We enjoyed it.
