The last time I talked about popiah from Melaka was this one at Jonker street over 18 years ago, and I remember the highlight being that it had pork lard, and someone also commented that there’s another stall at Bunga Raya that I should check out.
3rd Generation Bunga Raya popiah, with own shop
Well, 18 odd years later I finally get to the shop at Bunga Raya, except that it is now at Jalan Munshi Abdullah, a couple hundred meters up north from the original location.
It is also now a shop instead of just a stall, with a slightly better parking/stopping area to make your order instead of the narrow street of Jalan Bunga Raya, an upgrade for sure.
A popiah now costs RM 7 instead of RM 2.00 as someone mentioned 18 years ago. The stall now manned by the third generation operator who is very friendly and keen to have a chat when it wasn’t busy. According to him, they make everyone from scratch, including the popiah skin (which they also sell), cooking turnip for hours, the eggs, rendering pork lard, bean sprouts, the sauce, etc.
The result is popiah the size of burrito that is packed with the above mentioned ingredients with a healthy portion of crunchy pork lard. You can customize the spiciness to your liking, and yes, it was delicious! It was a cacophony of texture with sweetness & spiciness that’s complemented by crunchy, savory pork lard, easily the tastiest food we’ve had in Melaka.
We actually ordered a couple more to bring back to KL but of course, it was best eaten fresh.
