While kai si hor fun is the most popular dish for breakfast in Ipoh, when the sun goes down, bean sprout chicken (rice or noodle) takes over. In this entry, we’re going to check out one the old school operators located at Medan Selera Stadium.
Yoon Kee bean sprouts chicken, Medan Selera Ipoh
Yoon Kee has been operating for over 20-30 years, previously a stall under some trees nearby, but now a municipal food court at Medan Selera Stadium serving up dinner for mostly local crowd.
On the menu there’s chicken rice, chicken with hor fun soup, prawn mee, dry curry mee, and of course, bean sprouts. Not listed on the menu is the chicken innards that you can also order to go with the more traditional poached chicken.
check out those juicy poached chicken
For the three of us plus the baby, we had 2 plates of rice and a hor fun to go with half a chicken and a serving of chicken innards on a bed of bean sprouts. The chicken were quite juicy and smooth, though perhaps not at the level of Cowan Street. However, the innards, including liver, gizzards, and chicken intestine were superb, crunchy and chewy with the right mouthfeel any fans of innards would enjoy.
those innards are calling my names!
Of course, the bean sprouts were fat and juicy and as good any Ipoh has to offer.
One note though, while the rice was pretty nice, the hor fun (kuih teow) was really something that we should have ordered. Silky smooth and with a soup base that’s packed with flavor you could just have it on its own. I’ll definitely make sure to have that next round.
