In Ipoh, Kai Si Hor Fun reign supreme, and when it comes to a good KSHF, the number one indicator is usually the age of the shop/stall, and perhaps the age of the owner/operator as well. If these are the indicators to go by, then Ah Tiong Kai SI Hor Fun checks the boxes.

Ah Tiong is located at Weng Fatt kopitiam in Pasir Pinjir, a short distance from the famous Choong Kee “Big Tree” yong tau foo (also called fan liu in Ipoh). The kopitiam itself houses quite a few stalls, but this shredded chicken kuih teow soup stall is easy to spot as the busiest under this roof.

This was actually our second time trying to eat here as they can sell out by 10:15am on a weekday! There’s also a bit of a wait time as you’d expect, and we indeed had to wait for just over 15 mins for our turn, which was perfectly acceptable as the old man is managing as fast as he can cope, with two younger guys (his kids? relatives?) helping out.

A bowl of KSHF here cost RM 7.00 and came with a soup base that has full flavor without being overly thick. A sliver of prawn oil floats above, and as expected, there’s prawns, smooth poached chicken, chives, fried shallots, and of course, thin, silky kuih teow. The serving is pretty small, but oh so satisfying, certainly one of the most well-balanced bowl of KSHF and one that I wouldn’t mind revisiting for sure.

Oh, the kopi-o here is rather thick and intense too.

The broth is beautifully murky, which quite different with those I had in KL. The nice KSHF near my office is priced at RM8.50, without prawn. >_<
