It is known to most folks who work around KLCC area that while there are many choices for food in the iconic building’s Suria KLCC mall, option for dishes featuring non-halal ingredients (specifically pork), was non-existent. Well, ever since the opening of BLACK Market at Isetan KLCC, that is not true anymore.

Strategically located within the non-halal section of Isetan’s supermarket area at lower ground floor, Black Market is a smallish restaurant that can accommodate perhaps only some 20 people at any one time. High tables and bar stools are used here and the place resembles a bar more than a restaurant (well they do serve beer.)

The menu isn’t exactly extensive, other than small bites and tapas, the signature dishes were bak kut teh and kakuni (Japanese style braised pork belly), we tried both of these sets priced at RM 33 each.

The kakuni set came with rather generous portion pork belly slow-cooked for over 8 hours and braised in very rich, savory, and somewhat sweet sauce that goes super well with the steamed short grain rice. Additionally, there’s a miso soup and some edamame included in the set. The condiment that came was yellow mustard, which complement the fats very well, I love it. I’ve been here twice and ordered the same thing both times.

Another set we tried was the Iberico pork ribs bak kut teh, it came with a pretty generous portion of pork ribs with some tofu pok, enoki mushroom, & vege in a broth that has a pretty decent herbal note. There’s also rice, soy sauce with garlic as condiment, and 2 pieces of rather miserable yutiao.

I can’t really taste the difference between this Iberico ribs vs other pork ribs, but that’s not to say it’s a negative experience. The pork were tender and with the soup that’s more than decent, this is an above average bak kut teh in the heart of KL, even if the asking price is a little high.

Well, it is in KLCC after all.
