Several weeks ago Jean told me we’d be going to SS17 at Subang Jaya for breakfast. For someone who spent some of his college years in Subang area, I don’t remember SS17 having a lot of commercial areas, but if the wife wants to go, why not, right?

As it turns out, the eatery is a house that’s turned into a “restaurant” only on the weekends. Amachi’s Palagaram is a family business that operates on Saturdays and Sundays, offering several types of traditional appams with family recipes from the 70s (amachi basically means maternal grandmother in Tamil.)

There offer a few types of appams, the original plain appam with coconut sambal, egg appam with coconut sambal (what I ordered), and paal appam with jaggery. We also ordered a serving of mutton with potato to share.

The appam’s thin crust were crispy on the outside and transition to smooth and spongy towards the center, it was exquisite yet simple, supple, and delicious, but the highlight to me was their coconut sambal, a hint of spiciness with that unmistakable coconut aroma and sweetness, where else can I find them?

The mutton dish was, I thought … pedestrian.

We also had a couple cups of their masala tea to go with our appam breakfast, they were light and rather easy to drink, which may not be agreeable to those who like their masal tea to be strong, but it suited me just fine.

I thought it was definitely a place worth visiting, carries a certain warmth, it feels like a visit to a friend’s place and served by the parents while you’re still waiting for your buddy to come home.
