I’m often one to explore and try new types of food whenever traveling, be it for work or leisure. On the last day of my trip to Labuan, the lore of mee sasak got to me and I thought it’d be a good idea to give it a taste.
For those who’s never heard of mee sasak, you’re not the only one. It is a dish that was invented right here in Labuan and never spread out beyond this island after 4 generations of operator, and we’ll find out why…
kedai kopi win win’s mee sasak stall
The stall is located at Keai Kopi Win Win right in the heart of Labuan town, less than 10 minutes walk from Grand Dorsett hotel. As with many restaurants on the island, while bearing a “Chinese” name, the kopitiam is frequent by people of all races and religion, and indeed the mee sasak dish itself is often consumed by those from various faith and ethnicity.
I made my order and was served with a plate of pale looking noodle dotted with some scallion and a few strings of something that looks and tastes a bit like a mix between tofu skin and fish cake.
Being fried only with water and not oil (the origin of the word sasak was from the sound the wok made while frying with no oil…), the noodle was not smooth. The taste too was pretty bland and lack of any hint of seasoning. This is a dish that is perhaps quite a bit healthier than your typical mee goreng or char kuih teow, and one that my taste buds do not agree with.
If you’re looking for something different while in Labuan and are on a calorie restriction, give it a try, and if you’re like me, you may not even finish the plate, further enhancing the calorie restriction goal.

This versus kampua mee with lard, no contest bro!
kekeke: lard is yums for me.
So basically an overcooked mee soup lol. But this one time, I overcooked my Maggi mee, the water all dried up. But damn, it intensified the MSG seasoning and flavour. It was tastier than soup version. So how come this chef can f*cked up this dish? ahahahaha #msg4ever
kekeke: maybe you should start a stall.
but my job is full time eater!
kekeke: hey that’s my job too.
Hi, came by to say hello. Great to find out you are still blogging, when others I know have given up. I am still too. Its like hard to let go of my blog, like my baby which has grown up. All the best and keep blogging.
Ms Nava: same to you too, it’s a small place on the corner of the internet that I want to keep for a long long time. 🙂
So sorry to say that this Mee Sasak does not sound appetizing. Those dark brown part on the noodles are burnt?
Choi Yen: memang wasn’t appetizing to me.. but there are people who loves it, I guess food is indeed very subjective.
Have to be careful not to insult local delicacy, otherwise in your next trip, YOU will become the local delicacy in their annual feast and festival.
kekeke: you have a point…
you’re not in jungle village so it’s ok wan. Also you’re too skinny LOL cough
kekeke: i am indeed in jungle..
Go to try the sang yuk mee @ restaurant Mary win.
Sis: oh thanks, i shall try that next time.
