Everybody’s got a go-to tai chao (Chinese restaurants that serve dishes) place in their list, and for many in PJ, Chef Chew Kitchen at Seksyen 19 is that place, for quite a few reasons we shall see in this article.

Chef Chew is located at the crosshair of Seksyen 19, Seksyen 17, and SS2 in PJ, a rather strategic area though one with a parking situation that can sometimes be a little bit frustrating. However, the housing area right behind the row of shops provide ample parking spots if you’re not allergic to walking a few minutes.

The menu at Chef Chew Kitchen is pretty extension (see below) and features your typical categories of fish, prawns, other seafood, poultry, pork, bean curd, and vegetable dishes.

Like most places, there are a few dishes that defines this place, and for me, it starts with their famous Signature chicken rice with ginger (RM 85 for half chicken). The chicken rice came in a clay pot & the server will usually mix in the blended ginger into it, a unique taste that goes very well with their kampung chicken.

Definitely worth a try.

In this visit, we also had the crispy pork belly with garlic (RM 30), as the name suggests, it’s crispy, juicy, and plenty delicious. It was also served with whole deep fried garlic cloves, great for any garlic fans.

Their Signature curry with sea prawn (RM 65) did not disappoint either, plenty “lemak”, not overly spicy, and with prawns that were really fresh (I guess with the amount of customers they have, everything has gotta be fresh).

The charcoal tofu (RM 2)  is a pretty unique bean curd dish, and I thought the pumpkin sauce that came with was pretty interesting. Certainly a dish that’s suitable for kids.

As for vegetable, we had one of their other popular choice – clay pot kangkung with shrimp paste (RM 16), or kangkung belacan. This version isn’t spicy either and complements other dishes well with the rice.

Other dishes to check out:

  • pork lard rice – yes, as the name suggests, rice laden with pork lard, it’s as glorious as your cardiologist’s new car
  • chilled sweet & sour pork – a popular dish that I actually dislike (but loved by many), your usual sweet & sour pork but served in an ice bowl, making it tastes a bit more like candy than a pork dish

Chef Chew Kitchen is undoubted a popular joint and calling ahead for booking (perhaps 2 weeks in advanced) is advisable. As with most places that got famous, there’ll be people who love it, and plenty others who’ll claim it’s overrated. You be the judge.
