On our last trip to Ipoh, Jean brought us to one of the old school, less popular, and definitely not touristy kai si hor fun places in town. It was a small humble stall at a corner kopitiam by the name of Kedai Makan Loke Wooi Kee.
Loke Wooi Kee kopitiam, Ipoh town
The restaurant is situated just a stone’s throw away from the busier section of town (the place with salted chicken and touristy chicken rice), with a parking situation that’s slightly better, and morning crowd that’s consist of mainly locals.
bean sprouts and Ipoh hor fun, back to basic
The stall offers classic Ipoh style hor fun with prawn and shredded chicken, plus an side of bean sprouts if you like. Of course, we opted for both.
As evident in the photos, the soup was absolutely bang on and packed with aroma and sweetness of prawns, the chicken boiled to a perfect tender texture, and together with some chives and bean sprouts, makes up for a bowl of kuih teow soup that’s among the best I’ve ever tried.
simple, unpretentious, super delicious
The bean sprout side dish too did not disappoint, they were fat, juicy, and soaked with soy sauce mix that wasn’t over powering.
As it turned out, the stall operator is an old Chinese musical instrument player and my friend Eiling used to be his apprentice, talk about small world! I guess he’s since translate his art from serving the ears to our mouth instead.
