A few weeks ago the wife has a request that took us all the way from Shah Alam to Taman Putra, over 40km’s journey across most of Klang Valley from West to East. Our destination was the appropriately named Taman Putra Fresh Prawn Noodle restaurant.
Taman Putra Fresh Prawn Noodle
As the name suggests, this place specializes in fresh water prawn, locally also known as “udang galah”, or giant river prawn. The giant river prawn is actually native to this region, it has a rather large head compared to body size, and can grow to over 30cm in length.
The restaurant has perhaps seen better days, it’s a little cluttered and tables seemingly arranged in a haphazard style. However, we were here for the food, not trying to score points for ambiance.
The default noodle here is yee mee, and that’s what we went for, however, you can also opt for other type of noodle such as mihun. Sizes starts at X small (RM 18) all the way to 10XL (RM 170) per prawn.
For our lunch, we ordered one 3XL fresh prawn to be shared among both of us (was about to order 2 but the lady advised just 1, she was right).
we had the 3XL size fresh water prawn + sambal prawn petai
The plate that came was quite massive, with enough noodle to satisfy both of us. The prawn itself was rather large at 3XL, I can only imagine what it’d be like for the 10XL version.
Anyone who loves to enjoy the “juice” from prawn head will certainly love huge udang galah, it was very thick, flavorful, and will probably trigger gout within the same day for anyone who’s sensitive, so worth it though. The execution of the yee mee itself too were nice, with a smooth and creamy egg drop sauce that is very agreeable with my palate.
The sambal prawn petai (RM 30) was a pretty good dish in itself, but one that perhaps will pair better with a bowl of steamed rice instead, will skip this next time and perhaps order crab to accompany the fresh prawn.
Certainly don’t mind going back there again.
