My very first daging salai, or smoked beef experience was a trip to Sabak Salai some six years ago. It was a spicy adventure that opened my eyes to this particular dish that I since learned to really appreciate. So when my colleagues called for a biking trip (petrol powered, not muscle powered) to Pedas for more salai adventure, I immediately agreed to it.
Grobok Salai, Pedas, Negeri Sembilan
After more than an hour’s riding, with just a few minutes off from the Rembau exit, we reached Grobok Salai, one of the more popular restaurants of such type in the area. They do have a dedicated parking area next to the restaurant, and there’s even crowd control barriers to handle traffic for peak period, quite impressive.
We were asked the number of pax in our group and then given a table number, everything was very structured and organized. From then on, it was no different from any other nasi kandar type of places – choose the dishes of your choice to go with rice.

the color of Negri Sembilan food = yellow
There were a lot of dishes to choose from, with majority coming in the predominant color of Negeri Sembilan’s flag itself – yellow. This was mainly various type of “masak lomak lado api” – smoked meat with bird’s eye chili, turmeric, and coconut milk. There’s fresh water prawns, siput sedut (Cerithidea obtusa), beef, duck, fish, and more. There were also rendang, masak hitam, and more, plenty of choices for sure.
udang galah, siput sedut, and more
For my lunch, I chose a serving of daging salai (smoked beef), some squid, and lady’s finger to go with steamed rice.
True to the reputation, it was first and foremost, spicy!
The squid was cooked just nice without being rubbery, and the curry rather delicious with good aroma. More importantly, the main dish of daging salai was properly lemak (fatty) with the beef having a good smokey undertone without being over powering. Serving size was rather big too, and most of us enjoyed it so much we “tapao” some back home as well.
the daging salai was absolutely delicious
If you’re making a trip down south from KL, this is certainly a worthy stop-over for a proper satisfying meal… if your stomach can handle the spiciness that is!
