I think Ipoh doesn’t get enough credit for their contribution in the category of curry mee in Malaysia, more specifically, their dry version of curry mee.

After being introduced to it not too long ago, this dish has become one of my favorites and a must-have whenever I’m in Ipoh, which is quite a fair bit since it is Jean’s hometown.

On our latest trip to this old tin mining town, Jean suggested we visit Kedai Kopi Yee Fatt for breakfast, and so we did. The coffee shop has been in operation since 1955, just about as old school as you can get, before Malaysia as a country even existed.

The menu here is quite simple, wet or dry version of curry mee, and lor mai kai. The curry noodle usually comes with poached chicken, but you can also have it with roast chicken, roast pork, bbq pork, or any combination of the above.

We started with a lor mai kai with curry sauce (RM 6.00) and was absolutely delighted by how great a combo this turned out to be. The glutinous rice was soft and carries a slight sweet, savory note, with the curry providing that extra umami flavor that brings it to the next level. A unique dish that is a must-order here.

The dry curry mee with poached chicken and roast pork (RM 13.00) explained why this shop is always packed – explosion of flavor thanks to those super thick curry sauce that has a consistency of lava & a flavor profile to match.

I can only think of a way to improve this – if they actually de-bone the chicken instead of chopping through the bones, as it gets a bit tricky to separate them visually when that thick curry masks everything.

This place opens from 7am to 2pm but I’ve heard that in weekends, things may sell out by 11..

For an uncertain reason, dry curry noodles does not tickle my fancy but the Loh Mai Gai + dry curry do. It reminds me of the way I had those glutinous rice that sold in economy meehoon stall, but I had it banjir with curry sauce.

Fuiiiii… I must be going to the wrong economy stall when I was a kid, because I have never seen glutinous rice for sale before. Nevermind, tomorrow I eat 10 portions to catch up, every week
