They say, if you want to have the best and freshest ingredients when it comes to food, grow it yourself.

While this isn’t particularly feasible for individuals who stays in the city, for the owner of The Gift Tilapia at Seremban, they’ve pretty much done exactly that.

The Gift Tilapia Restaurant is a farm to table operation that’s been operation in this quiet part of Seremban for well over a decade. They have a farm growing their own tilapia (you probably guessed it from the name), live udang galah, and free range chicken. The farm is fed by natural water source, and far from the pollution of the city.

So far so good, but how does the dishes taste?

Well, I’m glad you asked.

We started the session with some live udang galah (giant freshwater prawn) that’s served on ice with a boiling pot of water. A quick dip into the boiling water for less than a minute and you get a perfectly orange udang galah, peel off the skin, suck on the head to not waste a drop of the juice, and dip the meat in some superior soy sauce.. yums!

This is as good as prawns get if you ask me.

Then of course, came their farmed tilapia in two different versions. The signature grilled tilapia with soy sauce, and the Portuguese grilled tilapia. Both tasted fresh, homey, and quite “natural” if that’s the right word to describe how fish should taste. The Portuguese version packs a bit of a punch, order this if you like it spicy.

The poached free range chicken came with chili sauce that’s quite fragrant and plenty of minced ginger. The meat, as with proper free range chicken, is more muscular and slightly tougher on the mouth, but also carries a more concentrated flavor to it.

Additionally, we also tried another version of udang galah (steamed), a pretty homey version of sweet & sour pork (with much less usage of ketchup), and a plate of vegetable.

The dishes here has a certain charm to it, something that reminds me of time when internet wasn’t a thing, cassettes came with lyrics, and waiting for the 8 o’clock news was how you get the daily update of the world around us. I like it, and this is also why I’ve heard a few friends saying The Gift Tilapia is their family’s favorite around Seremban.
