The days before Google map and all these online reviews, many of us used to explore eateries based mainly on two ways – hearing it from friends, or simply driving around and hunt for something to eat.

Yes, for those who are born after the internet, there was a time where you’d have to research for stuff without relying on the world wide web!

Well, the way we discovered Nasi Padang Amai was through a mix of both old and new methods, by driving around the unexplored area (to us) and clicking on Google Map looking for a lunch spot. To be fair, there were very few reviews of this place, but the photo looks semi decent, and I’m a fan of nasi Padang, so we went for it.

When we stepped into the kampung house compound that is the makeshift restaurant and saw that they serve gulai tunjang (beef tendon curry), I knew immediately that we made the right choice.

The options here were not huge, there were perhaps a little over a dozen different dishes to choose from – with the likes of salted fish, telur dadar, curry prawn, fried fish, cat fish, pucuk ubi, limpa masak hitam, brinjal, and so forth.

We went for the gulai tunjang, which tasted as good as the version I’ve remembered from Masakan Padang Asli in Kampung Baru, it was soft, tender, and full of that just ever so slightly chewy texture that I love. Do definitely have some cili hijau or cili merah (green & red chili paste) to go with.

We also tried the daging salai with sambal, which has a pretty strong smokey note that I thought was really nice.

On the second visit, I tried their limpa (spleen), gulai nangka, and ikan masin. The spleen is certainly something of an acquired taste, it is has a very strong flavor and perhaps even overly “jelak” if you’re not used to it. However, just like durian and tempoyak, those who likes it will really enjoy all its glory.

Gulai nangka was soft and flavorful, but I think their crunchy ikan masin (which you can eat in its entirety) is worth a mention.

Think Nasi Padang Amai is going to be one of our regular lunch places.

I was a fan of nasi padang in Singapore in the early 70’s too, so so so nice. I haven’t come across any anywhere soon. I hear they have a couple of places in Kuching but I’ve never been. Here, the closest we can get would be the Indonesian lady selling nasi campur. Very popular, long queues come lunchtime every day.

Most of the things you mentioned in this post, I don’t eat…lol…like beef tendon, durian, tempoyak and spleen (though I’ve never eaten cow spleen before and, after you say it’s an acquired taste, don’t think I ever will)…but love Malay food nonetheless….hehe! 😉

Beef tendon curry is something I would like to try, but I hope it can be cooked in thicker curry (like Rendang). 😛
I saw beef spleen in Chinese style braised mixed beef and it doesn’t look appealing to me. LOL

Choi Yen: this is the traditional gulai style, try it first, they do have thicker type of curry so you can use those sauce as well. 😀

Your article appeared in The StarEats section today. It would have been good if the article mentioned where is the outlet as it defeats the purpose of publishing the eatery without knowing where it is.

KH: I think since it takes just a simple google map or waze search for the place, it’s not strictly necessary to include in the paper. 😀
