My first yam rice experience was probably right after form 5 while waiting for SPM results, I was serving as an apprentice under my late dad as a backhoe loader operator and we had to go to Seberang Perai to get some spare parts for the machine. Dad being a fan of good food (that’s where I got it from), took the opportunity to bring us to the famous Chai Leng Park Yam Rice that is still operating till today.

Whenever I had yam rice, I’ll always remember that moment we had as father and son, but I digress..

What I’ll introduce to everyone here is one of the similarly old school yam rice place in Klang – Lee Heritage Yam Rice, situated pretty deep in Klang at Pandamaran.

The restaurant is much like many around this area, a make-shift set up converted from a “new village” house, talk about work from home.

Since there’s only one restaurant on this road, parking isn’t an overly difficult exercise. The dining area itself is quite cozy, if not maybe just slightly too warm during a hot day.

looks like a balanced meal isn't it?

Price list is clearly stated on the menu on the wall right behind the food preparation area, and ordering is done via the use of white board marker on a laminated ordering sheet (what a concept!)

We ended up ordering pretty much everything on the menu. There’s the braised pork belly with with half boiled egg, pork offal (stomach & intestine) plus tofu pok, and chicken feet.

These braised items were well cooked to a rather tender texture, with a taste profile that’s not overly strong, comfort food that’s very enjoyable.

The yam rice itself had the right amount of yam infusion, and interestingly served with sambal that’s very similar to what’s typically used for nasi lemak, an unexpected marriage that actually worked out pretty well.

Additionally, we also enjoyed the soup. The typical salted vege soup you’d expect accompanying yam rice, with a choice of coagulated blood (yes!), tofu, and more offal. Obviously I had the version with all in, that’s the only way!

If you find yourself in Klang, Lee Heritage Yam Rice is a great place to visit!

We do not have yam rice here, wish I could try. Got my eyes on the stewed pork belly and the egg, love those!

Yam rice with chee chap tong is like a match made in heaven….lol. I’ve also had yam rice served with a cooked sambal that resembled those you get with fried Hokkien mee. It also comes with a squeeze of dark thick soy sauce. P/S: Your (new) profile photo is very cute…with both KY & KC smiling/laughing profusely! đŸ˜€

I’ve sample the Chai Leng park version and its waay way better. The pandamaran one is overated IMO. The rice and spare parts are so so. It’s the soup base puts me off, it’s just watered down kicap with sugar. How I miss the yam rice of the old Kluang hawker market in the old days.

williamtan: well, different places, abit hard to compare something that’s over 300 km away.. I do agree Chai Leng Park’s version is superior, as with most Penang food. haha.
