When it comes to Ipoh hawker food, the usual suspects are always those ipoh hor fun, bean sprouts chicken rice, and maybe even those delicious dry curry noodle. Today, I want to introduce you to something special and rare – the nasi pulut at Kedai Kopi Keng Nam.

Keng Nam kopitiam is located quite a few streets north of the proper Ipoh city center, the benefit of this location is that you have an easier time looking for parking compared to an empty table, especially on weekends.

Tips: go early!

The main reason we came here was for the rarest of all hawker dish one can find – the freshly steamed nasi pulut.

The stall is operated by an old lady with outfit lifted straight out of the 60’s. The offering is simple, nasi pulut (glutinous rice), with your choice of home made kaya, or curry chicken.

The nasi  pulut is without any kunyit, hence the original white color. You won’t go wrong choosing either version, but I prefer it with those sweet and super rich home made kaya. Pure sin, oh so good.

When you’re on a holiday, the calories don’t count.

For those who prefers something else, the dry curry noodle here is pretty decent too. We had it with roast pork, while the curry sauce itself isn’t as thick as I’d have preferred, the taste profile was pretty decent, and having plenty of fresh mint leaves certainly is a plus in my book.

Since it’s Ipoh, Keng Nam also offers delicious toast with telur goyang (half boiled egg) and competent white coffee.

The question is, will you end up over ordering?

I’d go for the kaya, not so into pulut with curry. Everything sure looks good here!

I never eat nasi pulut like this, the nearest one would be those selling at economy mee stall, where the nasi pulut is cooked with soy sauce and dried shrimps.
I like your quote – When you’re on a holiday, the calories don’t count. Eat first, think later! Come back only diet!

I can see the appeal….eating this is like eating pulut tai tai/pulut tekan (which I love) with kaya. Like Choi Yen said, the pulut we get here are those cooked with soy and dried prawns or yellow-coloured cooked with kunyit (I actually prefer white-coloured pulut).
