What do you do when you find yourself in between meals in Penang?

You go for snacks, of course, and one of the better snacks to look for is available at this perhaps inappropriately named Free School Road goreng pisang stall.

Why is the name ill-suited you may ask? Well, nine out of ten times this stall will have no goreng pisang (deep fried whole banana fritters), the reason/excuse is always the same – it is hard to find the right banana (must be pisang raja, apparently) for the dish.

The good news is that the stall also serves pretty good fried nian gao that’s sandwiched with two pieces of yam, and even better fried mung beans.

The mung bean is actually double coated & double fried, resulting in crispy skin that’s crunchy with the filling that’s sweet and very satisfying. When you find yourself in Penang longing for even more food, check this out.

Alternatively, the similar stall at Tg. Bungah has fried nian gao sandwiched with sweet potato and yam, which I love even more than this version.

Yes, I love fried nian gao in between yam and sweet potato. Tried in Kuching, can’t get here. Right now, the trend is crispy pisang goreng – the batter is different, very crispy. Nice!

suituapui: I do like my goreng pisang to be crispy outside but with WHOLE banana and soft inside, love it.

Wow, they definitely take the ingredients they use seriously, means their Goreng Pisang must be very good! Fried Mung Bean? 绿豆? I never heard of this and your photo of it looked like fried tapioca. >_<

Oh, it’s pisang raja, is it? I thought different stalls use different types of banana…and as long as it’s of the right ripeness, they should be good. I actually like those short sweet ones…pisang emas, maybe? 😉
