The idea of banana leaf rice usually conjures up an image of a dining experience that’s hot, sweaty, packed, not entirely too comfortable, and often, with a hygiene standard one would not bring a toddler to.

Well, I’ve just found a place that is completely opposite of that image, while still offering all the positives bits that brought us to enjoy this dish in the first place.

We first spotted Big Leaf BLR while heading for lunch at Grub (great steak at decent price) situated just around the corner at Seksyen 17 near Happy Mansion. Jean then proposed to have it as our next makan destination when it was time to meet up with a few friends who always enjoy a good serving of banana leaf rice.

While Big Leaf BLR was quite packed when we were there, seating arrangement were pretty comfortable. The restaurant also has a rather high ceiling with ample ventilation and plenty of ceiling fans in a semi-alfresco setting. It was also clean, neat, well organized, and tastefully done up.

We each had their basic banana leaf set (RM 8.50) that came with 3 vege and a papadem, plus unlimited amount of curry to your heart’s desire. I spammed quite a bit of their crab and fish curry, which were packed with flavor while not being overly spicy.

Additionally, we also tried a few dishes typical of any BLR places – deep fried squid, ayam bawang (onion chicken), and deep fried tenggiri (mackerel). These usual suspects did not disappoint either, I thought it’s quite nice of them to incorporate some element of plating even at this  price point.

With these unique selling points and classic taste, it is no wonder Big Leaf BLR often have a queue by the door.

Worst banana leaf….a Chinese own. No fish curry. Worst service. If u just order few dishes and plain rice, despite ordering many side main menu, they will not give u curry gravy. Only if you order set. Stupid rules

Peter: Race should not be a factor but if they’re stingy with their curry then it’ll also be a no go for me. Didn’t experience that the time we went tho.

Wow, they are using REAL banana leaf, instead of the plastic one, LOL
Their plates also very nice, very different with the usual BLR restaurants.
