While char kuih teow gets all the fame, I believe Penang Hokkien mee, or what the rest of Malaysia usually refers to as Prawn Mee, is the true number one hawker dish in Penang. You can find prawn mee being offered in probably over 90% of kopitiam on the island (figure pluck straight out of the sky).

On the island, one of the most famous breakfast prawn mee spots must be Swee Kong kopitiam at Pulau Tikus. We had the opportunity to get the very last bowl from this popular stall a few weeks ago after the trip up for UTOP trail run event.

Swee Kong kopitiam is located at Pulau Tikus right next to the wet market and directly opposite the police station. Parking around the area can be a bit challenging but not impossible. Do keep in mind that the stall usually sells out by around 9am so get yourself there early!

As for the prawn mee itself, visually it isn’t very exciting, but for what it lacks in visual appeal, the prawn mee excels in what matters most – taste. The combination of sliced pork, prawns, bean sprouts, and generous amount of fried shallots works superbly with the very thick prawn shell infused broth. I liked mine with a mix of yellow noodle and meehun, perfection.

    Yes, I agree….I love prawn mee especially when it comes with inhouse freshly fried shallots, not those pre-bought ones you open and pour out of a plastic bag….haha! ;D

    I love a good bowl of prawn mee and KL has limited place selling it… even more confusing when Singapore prawn mee is also hokkien mee and also different than Penang’s prawn mee. LOL

    For me, the prawn mee broth is the most important element. I will usually slurp the broth first and I don’t even mind if the protein portions are stingy cause if I want a lot of protein, I wouldn’t order it! HAHA

    We had a really good one here, been around a long time but recently, the lady tweaked the recipe and made the soup a little bit spicy – not quite to my liking like that even though it is still very good.
