Whenever Japanese ramen is mentioned, the image of a bowl of sumptuous noodle with thick, almost milky broth, topped by perfectly prepared soy sauce marinated egg, and a slab of chasiu comes to mind. In Malaysia, the chasiu and broth are often pork base, and there’s even some who may go as far to say Japanese ramen can’t be Japanese ramen without pork.

Well, that can’t be further from the truth, enter Ramen Seirock-Ya, a ramen that’s made of halal ingredients. How does it fair?

Traditionally, Japanese ramen has always had two different broth base – tonkotsu (pork), and torigara (chicken). In fact, one of the the more popular non-halal ramen restaurants (one of my first ramen experience, Marutama) in Malaysia uses chicken base broth, even if their chasiu is pork base.

At Seirock-ya, the broth of their Toripaitan Ramen is a thick, collagen filled affair from boiling chicken in high heat, one that reminds me of those collagen soup made famous by Beauty in the Pot. This is actually now my go-to ramen when I’m craving for collagen chicken soup base.

There’s also options to go for thinner type of ramen here, I usually choose this as well cos they tend to soak up the flavors better in my opinion. Other ingredients include some fried shallots (why don’t other places do this?), green vege, egg, and a slab of (i believe) sous vide chicken breast.

Now, the chicken breasts were nice and properly cooked, they’re still not perfect replacement for pork chasiu, but perfectly acceptable especially when the soup is so good.

In addition to this thick soup, seirock-ya also offers the lighter Tokyo-ramen. For someone who enjoys strong flavors, I did not find Tokyo style ramen particularly enjoyable.

The chicken gyoza here felt somewhat “too healthy” as well, perhaps the meat they used were a tad too lean. I’d give it a skip.

If you’re looking for halal ramen, or if you’re someone who loves a thick collagen soup, this is a place to check out. They have two other branches Uptown and IOI Mall Puchong in addition to this one at Central i-City Mall in Shah Alam.

Will eat but not really into the rich, milky broth of Japanese noodle soups. I prefer our clear and refreshing ones.

I’ve always had pork broth with ramen….don’t think I’ve ever tried chicken ramen before. I like how you described it as “too healthy….for gyoza, I must have the pork version….hehehe! ^_~

I never had chicken broth Ramen because hubby & I are big fan of pork bone soup. But judging from the colour of the chicken broth, it must be rather flavourful.
