The name itself – “Nasi Kalut Jitra Mai“, was what first brought our attention to this particular eatery in Shah Alam. With a name like that, it is bound to be something good and authentic, right? Well, we were glad that our hunch was spot on for this one.

Nasi Kalut Jitra Mai, as the name suggest, serves Northern style Malay food originated from this little town in Kedah by the name of Jitra, the only reason I know about the place was because a close friend of mine attended the polytechnic school there. As a rule of thumb, the further north you go from KL, the hotter the food gets, and this is no exception, in a good way.

The set up here is very simple, a single stall right in front of the restaurant serving traditional Kedah yellow rice with a few selection of main dish to choose from – fried chicken, beef, spleen, squid, chicken gizzard/liver, salted egg, lady’s fingers etc.

The only option is “tapao” in plastic & paper, regardless if you bring the food home or dine in.

We’ve tried their fried chicken and beef set (set basically means with hard boiled egg + lady’s finger, RM 25 for both), and they were as spicy and as delicious as expected, thick, flavorful curry with a kick and meat that was well cooked with a couple green items to balance it all out. Definitely satisfying.

If you’re missing some good old fashion Northern Malay food, here’s one to check out. I believe they have another branch in Ampang too.

I was quite excited when you mentioned that there’s a branch in Ampang, only to google and found out they’ve closed already. Perhaps they moved somewhere else. >.<
