On our last trip to Ipoh, we decided to check out this one of the more storied and perhaps the smallest dessert stall in town – Hong Kee Mah Chee at Pasir Pinji.
Hong Kee Mah Chee has been operating for at least over 40 years, from a wooden stall to the more common stainless steel hawker stall with giant picnic umbrella, and now, a very cute standalone teal colored brick bungalow. The building is a stark contrast to the houses along Jalan Queen, you won’t miss it.
This place only offers 2 items on their menu – mua chee (RM 3), and peanut broth dessert (RM 4). They were served on disposable container (maybe due to pandemic?) and there are actually a couple benches to sit down and enjoy them right under the tree next to the brick house, a pretty unique and cute experience to be honest.
mua chee & peanut soup dessert
As for the taste, however, we found that the mua chee was perhaps a little too dense, despite having a good balance of crushed peanuts and sugar, it could probably benefits with a bit of fried shallots like how they’re usually done in Penang.
The peanut paste dessert didn’t wow either, it was ok and slightly starchier than ideal.
That being said, well, this place makes a cute photo backdrop.

Looks like the Foochow tang yuan that we eat at that festival once a year. Oh? The peanut soup was disappointing? I’ve never tried that – sure would grab the chance if I see any anywhere.
suituapui: I think this is very different from tang yuan tho.
I always enjoy a little foodie escape to Ipoh. I just go more often.
Monica: sounds like good life!
I only tried once and I remember I like them both. 🙂
Choi Yen: maybe standard changed? Not sure…
Must be good profits selling mua chee…lol. I’m assuming the mua chee seller is staying in the bungalow behind? Otherwise who would be so kind to let someone build a contraception in front of the bungalow blocking its view/feng shui…haha.
eatwhateatwhere: not sure where they stay yaaa must be quite profitable. lol.
