I believe there’s food entries on pretty much every state on Peninsular Malaysia except Perlis, so to check off the list, here’s where you find one of the best prawn mee (Hokkien Mee) in Perlis. At the morning market at Kangar, the biggest “city” in this Northern state.
Mahkota Restoran at Kangar morning market, Perlis
To be fair, Kangar isn’t exactly a tourist destination, we were there for my younger brother being the latest consultant physician at KPJ Perlis (you now know where to go should you need such service, look for Dr. Teoh).
With my brother having been at Kangar for a while now, he’s quite familiar with some of the better food spots in town. We went to a few over the short trip, and some are definitely worth sharing, this entry is a start.
Anyway, this particular prawn mee stall is located at Mahkota kopitiam in the morning market at Kangar. There are a few such kopitiam within the market itself, this one is the located to the right as you walk in from the parking area.
The stall offers both prawn mee and loh mee, and with some extra ingredients that are very attractive if you’re into these sort of things.
For our breakfast, we chose to have prawn mee with “extra” – pork head skin (猪头皮) and intestine. The bowl also comes with the other ingredients a standard – prawns, pork slices, half an egg, fried pork lard, your choice of noodle, and bean sprouts.
The ingredients were well cooked and had just the right texture, but more importantly, the soup and sambal too were right on point. It’s not just a bowl of prawn mee that’s good in Perlis, I’d argue it beats most in Penang too!
So if you find yourself in Perlis hungry for breakfast, this is a place to check out.

Prawn Mee crowned fully with ingredients, I have to say “Yes”!
Choi Yen: oh yessss.
Doesn’t look quite like the Penang ones. Tiny shrimps but lots of meat.
suituapui: that’s cos we asked for more, hahah. But I do agree that prawns in East Malaysia are usually bigger!
Who would have known….a Hokkien/prawn mee here would trump the ones in Penang…lol! P/S: I was wondering what pork head skin was (I know what chee peh is…the one usually found in curry mee) until I saw you eat it (so it’s really chee tau peh…as in skin from the head!). Now I know why I don’t know coz I don’t like fatty, wobbly stuff….hah..hah! 😀
eatwhateatwhere: hahaha, too bad you don’t like those stuff else it’s heaven!
You know all the best spots!
Monica: only due to circumstances. haha
next time bring us laaa LOL
UMei: lai lai lai
