Klang Hainan Curry Rice, well, the title is probably not what most of us expect when talking about food from Klang, since it’s not bak kut teh, right?
Well, Hainan curry rice, or sometimes called Hailam Rice (in Hokkien), is one of another pretty unique dish I’ve never seen anywhere else in Malaysia outside of Klang, though you may find this outside Malaysia, more about that later.
klang hainan curry rice restaurant
I’ve actually written about a version of this dish at Medan Selera 128 before, but today I want to bring you to a more proper establishment that offers this dish, at the heart of town by the name of Klang Hainan Curry Rice (Restoran Nasi Kari Hainan, Klang)
This restaurant was said to be originated from the same people that used to sell the same dish behind the old Cathay cinema that has since been removed, looking at the owner/operator in the photo & video above, you’ll probably agree that these guys have been doing the same thing for quite some time now.
stewed pork, intestine, pork offal soup
Back to hailam curry rice, well, this is how it goes.
Basically you get a choice of braised ingredients – bean curd, pork slices, egg, intestine, tofu pok; or pork offal soup to go with rice that’s covered by a layer of thick gooey curry that is very mild. Additionally, at this particular restaurant, they also serve “ketchup fish”, a dish that we did not try.
pork lovers would definitely enjoy this
We really enjoyed the braised dish, especially the really soft intestine, and pork that came in proper layers of skin & fat. The offal soup too was complete with big intestine, more small intestine, and my favorite – coagulated pork blood. As for the rice, well, those gooey curry can take a bit of getting used to (I’m getting there), but you always have the option of having the curry served separately or opt out altogether.
One thing to improve tho, those chili sauce can perhaps be spicier.
Perhaps when we can go to Singapore again, I’ll check out the version there, I’ve heard good things.

Judging from the look of the food, I would say that this Hainan Curry Rice probably not my cup of tea. 😛
Choi Yen: hahaha, i’ll have them all to myself!
Never had Hailam curry rice with everything in soy sauce like that but I sure would love to try this version! Looks really good!
suituapui: pork fans like us will never say no! haha.
Had those braised pork, eggs, offal, etc. type food…..separately not together with curry though. Oh, so this is called Hainan (or Hailam) rice. The rice looks extra mushy….is it supposed to be like that?
eatwhateatwhere: correct, the rice with those “curry” memang will be mushy.
Do not waste time, nothing is good here
Boon: o.O
