In a blink of an eye and suddenly we’re staring at 2015. I’m glad that I had the opportunity to try a lot of new (to me) food places, here are some of the selected few that I really enjoyed, they are listed in a few categories:
Lets start with a few halal places. Ayam Bakar Wong Solo for their ayam penyet and grilled chicken to go with those awesome sambal. We also stumbled upon Cendol Bakar (the guy’s name, not how they burn the ice..) at Kuala Selangor. Grilled fish fans should check out the old school Mat Teh ikan bakar stall at Dato’ Keramat too. Then there’s messy burger at Bobby’s, and thanks to a Malay colleague, I was also introduced to A Hassan’s Ayam Goreng Kampung as perhaps the best food stall on a highway rest stop.
Non Halal Restaurants:
In this category, lets start off with steamboat that has huge Alaskan Crab and Geoduck at The Pot, Kuchai Lama. For those who love yakitori, Maruhi Sakaba is a place to check out. Hua Xing became one of our regular places for dinner, and if you love bitter gourd Hokkien Mee, there isn’t a better place to go. Ma Maison’s Tonkatsu at 1 Utama is now my favorite tonkatsu place (not that there’s many), and thanks to a native Klang girl, I am now a fan of Ah Her bak kut teh (even though they’re very stingy with soup)
I went to dozens of new hawker stalls, but these are the few that I kept going back – the new kuih teow soup place at Mingtien that serves coagulated blood, Peter’s pork noodle at Brickfields (been there for ages), if you love fried chicken rice, there’s on at Segambut with very nice chili sauce, and who can say no to nasi lemak when it comes with pork skin curry? Check them out!
A couple food reviews in nicer restaurants came to mind in this category, the lobster affair at The Restaurant, and those parma ham & delicious pizzas at Midi 57 at Bangsar. I’ve also made a habit of going to Ten Japanese for their lunch sets, to the dismay of my wallet balance.
Out of Klang Valley:
I went out of state a few times in 2014, and there were a few places worth checking out if you happen to be there. Fu Man restaurant at Tanjung Malim for those pork dishes and tofu. Siam Road CKT in Penang if you don’t mind the wait time, and awesome kuih teow soup at the Anson Road wet market in Penang if you love chicken skin and savory soup. If you head to Genting/Bukit Tinggi, Loong Sing is a worthy place to stop over for lunch too. I was also introduced to KK’s version of pork noodle at Jia Xiang Sang Yuk Mian, good stuff!

For someone who dines out quite a lot, I’m almost always in a lost when it comes to eating in shopping malls. Out on the streets, pasar malam, or random restaurants? I’m good at those, but under the giant roofs that house hundreds of shops? Good luck.
Manmaru Udon at Mid Valley Megamall
So when we found ourselves at Mid Valley the other day, we did what most people do, randomly wandering around to find something to eat.
In this instance, facade of a restaurant is important, and that’s how we got into Manmaru Japanese Udon Restaurant, despite the fact that I’m not exactly an udon fan at all.
Signature Supreme Udon
As it turns out, other than a good variety of udon, Manmaru also serves starters, salad, yakimono (grilled or pan fried stuff), agemono (deep fried stuff), and nabe (Japanese hot pot).
Since this is a primarily udon place, we had to try their udon, so why not choose the top of the range?
The Signature Supreme Udon (RM 28.90) comes with pretty good amount of prawns, scallops, and even abalone slices (not sure if it’s “real” abalone, but I don’t really care). The broth was thick, creamy, and actaully pretty delicious. I also enjoyed the udon noodle itself, having a pretty good texture.
By the way, the cheapest udon here starts at RM 11.90, with more than two dozen varieties to choose from.
ebi pizza & tuna carpaccio
The picture of their ebi pizza (prawn pizza, RM 19.90) looks too good to pass up, so I ended up ordering that. The thin crust pizza was loaded with cheese, had 8 pretty good size prawns, and all those mushroom, chunks of bell peppers, and spring onion. I really enjoyed it.
We also ordered one of their specials – tuna carpaccio. This starter actaully took the longest to be served, and while looking pretty decent on the photo, it was a disappointing dish. The tuna was a bit too “cooked” and the dish could use more olive oil. I’ll avoid this.

That being said, Manmaru is a pretty decent place if you’re looking for udon or pizza, I’m assuming other standard dishes such as tempura and grilled items are worth trying as well. If I’m at Mid Valley again over meal time, I wouldn’t mind checking it out again.

If you’ve been reading this blog for a while, you know that I’m a fan of street foods, and it is not confined to any particular category of street food either. Chinese, Malay, Mamak, I love all of them.
In recent time we have a bit of a food truck movement, but while those are cute and neat, we actually already have food trucks since yonks. The only difference being that food truck 2.0 operates inside the truck, while the original food truck has the operators standing on the road side, eye-to-eye level to diners. I feel that the experience is always a bit more intimate.

Anyway, here’s a couple old school food trucks opposite the small Giant hypermarket at Kelana Jaya we discovered a short while ago. I first came to this place back in 2007 with my Malay friend Naida (who has since moved to the States) for nasi lemak kukus. Time flies huh?

The first stall is Ikan Bakar Fend, offering a variety of ikan bakar, including pari, talapia, kembong, cincaru, keli, as well as chicken and cockles.
I went with the default choice of ikan pari (stingray) with rice (RM 10) and was delighted by the portion as well as the quality of the dish. The fish was split into halves with the spicy and slightly sweetish sambal plastered all over, it was delicious and went very well with steamed rice. In fact, the accompanying sauces weren’t even really needed. I really want to try their ayam bakar next time.
Laksa de Kelana, Haze approved of the taste
Another stall worth trying is Laksa de Kelana that offers laksa, and apparently also Malay char kuih teow basah. Haze tried the laksa and was happy with it. The bowl of laksa and two coconut drinks (in cups) cost us RM 6 and was definitely more than worth it.
Maybe next time I’ll try the kuih teow basah.

Another demonstration on how Transitions® Signature lens is useful in day-to-day life. Transitions lenses clear up when going into tunnel
Lets start with driving.
I have a mild case of astigmatism so driving with a pair of prescription glasses is something I usually do. Since my car is not tinted at all, what I like about Transitions® Signature™ lenses here is that I can always just drive into the Smart Tunnel with just one pair of glasses. When I’m in the tunnel, the lenses are clear. When I’m out of the tunnel, my lenses are tinted. Simple as that. No more switching between a pair of regular sunglasses and clear glasses.

The lenses also work very well both indoor and outdoor. Since it’s activated by UV light, the lenses are always very clear indoors. The above pictures illustrate the differences between me in a hair salon (with my hair dresser hiding behind) and having a glass of watermelon juice by the walkway after the haircut. The slight tint is due to the cloudy day with some UV presence. Yes, there’s UV light even on a cloudy day!

Riding my old school Honda Chaly is another great application for the glasses. Regardless with the visor up or down (my visor is not tinted at all), the lenses work predictably in the way the tint changes. Again, when it’s bright in the day, the lenses become dark, and when you ride in the night, the lenses turn clear. You don’t have to use different glasses for day and night riding.
Transitions lenses work great for mountain biking as well
One of my many hobbies is mountain bike riding.
For those who ride, eye protection is also something very important (other than helmet, gloves, knee pads etc) as there are tree branches, debris, and other stuff that may get into your eyes in the trail. Transitions® Signature™ glasses work great in this situation not only as a form of protection, but also adapting to the various lighting conditions in mountain bike trails. Very often along a mountain bike trail, there are many twists and turns like a stretch of shaded path covered by with trees and open-air slopes that are exposed to the sun. A couple weeks ago I went down to Isetan looking for something to fill the stomach during the lunch hour. As it turned out, The Japan Winter Feast Fest was on going (28 nov – 8 dec, 2014). I walked around abit and saw this Japanese steamed rice stall that looked pretty enticing.

The stall offers two different dishes – Sansai Okowa & Chestnut Steam Rice. You can have them at RM 15 per portion, or alternatively, have them mixed with 1/2 portion each. To maximize my taste bud exposure, I chose the latter, of course.
They were both vegetarian dishes, with the Sansai Okowa, or wild vegetable sticky rice packed with quite a variety of mushroom and thus having a slightly savory taste to it which I like. The chestnut steamed rice, on the other hand, is packed with chestnut, sesame, and red bean which gave it a sweeter taste. I personally prefer the Sansai Okowa, but both were pretty good.

Isetan run these type of food fair pretty often, so be sure to check it out if you’re at KLCC. They also have a smallish eating area at the lower ground floor where you can noms away these takeaway food.
