Over the weekends I went to Sunway Pyramid (every mall should have the same parking system) to check out Nissan’s X-Gear event since a little bird told me that there’s this “Augmented Reality” app that I should look at.

the Nissan X-Gear app on iOS & Android

For your benefit, here’s the definition of Augmented Reality:

a term for a live direct or indirect view of a physical, real-world environment whose elements are augmented by computer-generated sensory input such as sound, video, graphics or GPS data.

The event showcases Livina X-Gear, a 5 seater crossover from Nissan (more about the car later). There was the X-Gear application with Augmented reality, a half pipe with skateboarders performing cool stunts, and you can even try your hands on wall climbing. Life style activities that identify with the X-Gear.

For those who are supremely impatient and/or too lazy to read, the video above is for your consumption.

3 easy steps to play the Nissan X-Gear app in 3D

To get your hands on the Nissan X-Gear  app with AR, just follow these directions:

  • Scan QR code, or click this for Android, and this for iOS devices (iPhone/iPad/iTouch)
  • download and install the application
  • point your camera to the X marker (download PDF here) and start playing!
For more information head to http://www.nissan.com.my/annoucement/ar.aspx. Contest period is from 21 Oct 2011 to 15 Dec 2011.

I installed it on my SE Arc, and Haze tried the app at the event with their iPad2 too (iPad 1 won’t work since it’s lacking the required camera).

The AR portion of the game is two fold. The device is activated by having its camera pointing towards the X marker, and at the same time the “reality” within the application is affected by the way you tilt/move the device in relation to the X marker. Pretty interesting.

In the game, your task is to pick up as many passengers as possible and drop them off at the Nissan check point (pick VIP for more points!). The control is located on the left bottom corner, the natural way is to use your left thumb. I’d say iPad2 is probably the best device to play this due to the larger screen.

virtual garage featuring the Nissan Livina X-Gear

There’s also a Garage and Specifications tab on the application for more information on the Nissan X-Gear too.

In the application’s virtual garage, you can see the X-Gear in different colors as well as in a virtual 360 degree view. Clicking on particular points on the car brings up detailed features with more photos, full specification of the car is available too. Everything you need to know about this car is on available on screen in a jiffy.

Another feature of the application is the short cut to register for test drive. Clicking the Register for Test Drive button opens up the browser to the registration site for Nissan. Just complete the form in a couple pages to get your test drive scheduled. You don’t even need to find out the phone number of your nearest Nissan dealer to make a call, everything is done online via  your mobile device.

Of course, any fun game can only be made better when there are prizes associated with. For every 1,000 points you score and submit, you’ll earn a contest entry for a chance to win an iPad 2 monthly (Grand Prize), or an iPod Shuffle weekly (Consolation Prize).

So if you have an Android phone/tablet or one of the qualified iOS devices, try out this AR app. It’s FOC, there’s nothing to lose 😀

I took the opportunity to test drive the X-Gear while I was there too. The crossover is pretty spacious, with plenty of legroom, headroom, and “shoulder room” too.

The car is powered by a 1.6 liter engine with a 4 speed automatic transmission that should get you anywhere (including places like Genting) with no problem. Fuel consumption is claimed to be at 13.8 km/liter, which is quite impressive for a vehicle in this category.

Haze mentioned that any car must also have a mirror at the passenger side for necessary female vanity purposes, and the X-Gear pass with flying colors by having a magnified mirror. The glove compartment too is deep enough to store any GPS/book/junk that you might have, and the boot, man, I think can fit at least 4-5 sets of dive gears. This car is perfect for a dive trip!

sry but this is totally out of the topic but it’s good to have the same parking system as Sunway Pyramid but then it’s still difficult to find parking there too esp. weekends and peak hours.

I think a good parking area and design makes a difference too.

PS: Tropicana Mall has the similar parking system now, if I’m not mistaken.
