Malaysian Food Blog, Travel, Diving & More

I think off day for most people involves sleeping till at least 11am and then have a lazy brunch.

I am on leave today, I woke up at 5:50 am to the phone call from Mell saying that her plane just landed from Melbourne, almost a full hour ahead of schedule. Hello MAS, what’s with the whole ON SCHEDULE promise? =/

So I quickly got myself ready and drove to KLIA in total darkness, it felt weird a bit weird to be driving in the morning with almost no traffic.

Update 30/6/2017: They’ve moved back to Klang, check this post

Char Kueh Teow at Restaurant Seng Lee
wholesome char kueh teow

The journey back to her place fixed that tho, the Sprint highway was a bitch and we got stuck a good extra hour on the road jamming to The killers, as well as other morning commuters. The former is always awesome, but the latter, heh.

So after she dropped off everything and got freshened up, we decided to stop by Restaurant Seng Lee for breakfast and let the traffic ease up a bit before heading off.

I’ve heard a lot about this particular char kueh teow stall, and the reputation was not unfounded. Bean sprouts were fresh, crunchy and juicy, prawns were relatively big, the kueh teow fried to the right moisture content, and with the egg, chives, and the bits ofΒ  “chai poh” (preserved turnips), garlic. Everything was done just nice, it would have been perfect if only the cockles were bigger and juicier, but I guess you can’t have everything everytime.

Mell and KY at Restaurant Seng Lee
Mell is back!

The Penang’s favorite hawker food at this place goes for RM 4.50 a plate, and I’ll be back for more! This is the place that can replace my then-favorite PJ state keuh teow stall that went missing (anyone know where they’ve moved to?)

p/s: Apparently I’m supposed to be exploring the Damansara Heights area more. hehe

I believe the owner of the CKT stall owns a shoplot somewhere in Puchong. But heard that he’s running the coffee shop now, selling drinks, no longer frying Kueh Teow.

  2. i was just craving for ckt yesterday! why you do this to me?!!!

  3. the State guy shifted to Puchong Perdana for a while, now he is retired. missed his CKT, too

I panicked when I woke up and saw ETA was 5.38am okay! :X The plane hasn’t even stopped moving for 10 seconds yet when I whipped out my phone to quickly call you. I’m such a hazard sometimes.

  11. ohai mell! wb

  13. Gotta try it this week, if my pregnant wifey wants to haha. Anyway glad that your other half is back from Melbourne!

  14. Ky! Where is the koay teow? I only see bean sprouts! πŸ˜›

  15. Restaurant Seng Lee’s pork noodles was my staple food during college. I loved ordering loh shu fun in kicap and the pork (extra pork!) in soup. The soup is darn good, thanks to the generous portion of liver. Pile on some extra fried pork fat and you’re all good. Try it… hopefully the same aunty selling lah. Down the road got a lorry selling some good pisang goreng and etc.

  16. unkaleong,
This one still fries the ckt. πŸ˜€

    Hahahah good timing. πŸ˜›

    Huai Bin,

    I haven’t tried that one. :/

Haha I’ve seen some with the same type of ingredients but somehow still manage to royally mess it up

    Make it happen!

    Tan Yee Hou,

  28. The quality of this stall drops a LOT during lunch when he gets too many orders. Best time to eat is breakfast.

KY, PJ State CKT has moved to Sri Manja here:

  29. I went to eat at Seng Lee last month but noticed that the original cook (the fit old man) was not there and instead a young woman was doing the frying and a young man doing the serving as shown in you pic above.

What happened to him?? The taste is now somewhat different of course and my opinion not as good as the original.

  30. ZR: Hey you are right, that’s not the original cook. The original cook is some uncle of my ex-gf.

  31. It’s being cooked by the daughter now. It was previously cooked by an uncle, it was a lot tastier!

  32. Alan,
    Thanks! πŸ˜€

I’ve never tasted the “original” guy but this one was still very good. πŸ˜‰

    Paul Tan,
    oOo pro.

  33. have tried the lady’s CKT..
too bad i have to say.. it taste bad, bland, oily..
couldnt pass it at all….. :X
where’s the old man frying now ?

  34. char kueh teow?

i only eat char kueh teow in malacca because mlaccan love adding TIAN JIANG[sauce or ketchup] that only get in here

  35. Gowhere Dowhat

Been craving for CKT, any good ones in PJ? Please let me know

  36. david,
I think your standard is unusually high.

    cai hong,
Ahh, I don’t really like the tian jiang version though. Personal preference I guess. πŸ™‚

    Gowhere Dowhat,
PJ? emm.. Seksyen 17 or something I think, I have to explore ab it. πŸ˜€

  37. my very 1st plate of char kueh teow cost only…

    30 cents…rm 0.30…tiga puluh sen…hahaha…

    i am old.

  38. lb,
Hahah that must be a very long time ago, mine was RM 1.20 or RM 1.50 hehe

  39. After reading that the cook had changed, I went there with my wife (this is her favourite CKT stall). I found it largely the same as the old uncle’s. If anything, it was missing that dash of pepper and was less oily. My wife, though, was extremely disappointed, so much that she didn’t finish her plate.

  40. Alan,
Psychological factor in food can sometimes be very very important. It’s probably something similar to placebo effect?

  41. Extremely disappointed! CKT is a big SO-SO only!

  42. even thou tis is an old post I miss those nice food at Seng Lee.
I am so happy finally I found all the stalls in Klang Valley…char kuey teow, wantan mee, curry mee, pork noodles.
    All info is here :

  43. […] those who loved the old first generation Jalan Batai Char Kuey Teow (Damansara Height’s Seng Lee kopitiam) back in the days, you’re in luck – you can now find the original uncle manning a Char Kuey […]
