After reading my entry on the Famous Seremban Favorites Restaurant’s Char Siew (BBQ Pork) a long time ago, Cheesie commented that the best char siew in this side of Klang Valley is Meng Kee at Tengkat Tong Shin. So I made her promise to bring me there one of these days.

She did, twice. We had to walk the whole round of Jalan Alor and Tengkat Tong Shin in rain just to find that the place was closed on the first visit. But there is reward in being persistent, we got our fix during the second visit a while ago.

We got there at before 10 in the morning and it proved to be too early. Chicken were ready, but they were still preparing the char siew. We were told to come back at 10:30.

We did, and ordered a plate of char siew, steamed chicken, vegetable, and rice. The restaurant was a house and you won’t find any fancy renovation, extended drinks menu, nor air conditioning, just good old fashion eat and sod off type of place. The crowd was building up by 11am.

The food, well, true to Cheesie’s recommendation, was excellent! The char siew very tender and succulent, yet carries a hint of swetness at the caramelized outer layer, marvelous. The chicken did not disappoint either, though not as smooth as those I had at Soo Kee Ipoh Hor Fun in PJ, but still plenty good in it’s own right. The rice too were properly flavored, it was a very satisfying meal.

Price wise, this place is just above food court level. You should be able to have a pretty complete meal for RM 10 per person. When are we doing this again, Cheesie?

    Yes this is the BEST CHAR SIEW IN TOWN!!!!
    I never try bfore at Tong Shin. I tried their branch at Glenmarie. BEST BEST!!!

    Too bad the fat part doesn’t melt in your mouth. You say this is good coz you haven’t tasted better. Try the one at Soo Kee Restaurant

    Actually there are many places where the food is just as good as Meng Kee, if not better. They are just hidden away or you could say only known to the locals or office workers. Why they aren’t more famous, I don’t really know.

    For example there is one in Kepong, and another Selayang, where the food (entire package) is absolutely delicious and the price is about 50% cheaper than Meng Kee. I believe it is the same too for other states. Oh there’s also one in Jalan Ipoh but it’s kinda expensive.

    Meng Kee! I didn’t know the name of the restaurant…but had been there a few times. My colleague always ‘da bao’ one whole slice of ‘char siew’ – UNCUT!

    Dear KY,

    I had tried very hard to erase that place from my brain… and nearly sucessful until today.

    Don’t get me wrong… but eating too much ‘fat’ is not healthy for me…

    As you are aware… the charsiew there is super nice.. and had the perfect balance of the meat and fats…. making it very tasty!

    Everytime I eat there, I will order at least double portion of the charsiew… and pass on the chicken

    ..and it is a sin to waste food!!

    Careful! Jalan Alor is at risk of being permanently renamed Jalan Kejora, and Tingkat Tong Shin is likely to be renamed soon (as stated DBKL policy is to do away with road names that have Tingkat in them). Must update names liao!

    Hey, KY, I noticed a disturbing trend in Jalan Alor. The ambiance of the stalls have somewhat changed. There’s restaurants at the back which serves drinks and even though the food is from the stall itself, it’s brought into the restaurant and paid for separately. It’s not a good or bad thing, I’m just wondering how they managed to do this on such an organized scale.

    OMG!!!!i love love LOVE the char siew there!! everytime i go, i’ll order..

    “char siew tau, extra fei & extra loong!” the fats is not white color like most of the char siew you eat outside.. it’s TRANSPARENT!! damn yummy!

    and must drink their “dong gua longan sui” when eating there.. perfect combination!

    whoa… salivating now!

    If not mistaken ,they have another branch at Glenmarie too.

    IF you are craving for cha siew, the one opposite Sea View restaurant in Sea Park PJ is definitely worth trying.

    Meng Kee has 1 branch at Shah Alam Glenmarie U1. Operated by the daughter (if i am correct la). I guess KY also ate there b4.

    And well…. The price is cheaper (omg lolz) amid intense competition in the area.

    I would say the Char Siew is great but chicken is just so-so.

    When u turn to Jalan TongShin, the 1st coffee shop on left, it has yummy Char Siew pork too. Only serve during lunch. Sold out after 2pm usually.

    went to look for this shop last week. reliase that it has moved to a new location at Jalan Alor. The taste is great but the price is on a high price. Anyway, once in a way is OK…i update the latest map, address, and gps coordinate at my blog. Cheers!

    Hi there,

    If u ever go to Petaling Street n try e Macau Char Siew n their Hainanese Chicken rice, i will say u definately dont eat others. The place jt next to e P.Street market or behide e Chest nut stall. E only old kopitiam in P.Street. Go n try, pls correct me if am wrong coz e my Hongkies frd also comments e same.
