A couple weekends ago while trying to play catch up in tasting as many different bak kut teh restaurants in Klang as humanely responsible, I took up the offer from Zess, our resident Klang bkt expert, and met up for a sumptuous brunch at Ah Chee clay pot bak kut teh.
Ah Chee Bak Kut Teh, Bayu Tinggi, Klang
Ah Chee is of course, another one of Zess’ friends (this guy knows a lot of BKT operators). The restaurant is located at an end lot at the rather busy commercial area at Bayu Tinggi, Klang.
If you’re not familiar with Bayu Tinggi, well, it is basically located in between Bukit Tinggi and Port Klang, a place that’s frequent mostly only by Klang residents.
Da Tuan Yuan at Bukit Raja is actually one of the first restaurants we visited when collecting keys to our new home at Shah Alam, way before renovation and moving in more than half a year ago. Since then, we’ve been back again quite a number of times, and even manage to bring mom & family there for dinner during their visit over CNY.
Mom approved of the food there, so should you!
Restaurant Da Tuan Yuan at Bukit Raja, Klang
The restaurant is located at the commercial area right across from Bukit Raja AEON shopping mall. For those who aren’t familiar with Klang, dinner time is usually about a full hour earlier than PJ/KL folks, so by 6:30 or 7 pm, the place is usually packed, especially if it’s a weekends.
Parking can be a bit of a pain but if you’re willing to walk more than 45 seconds, it’s usually not an issue. The inside is air conditioned, while there’s also a pretty big al fresco area for when it gets packed and weather permits.

Just like many restaurants in Klang, roast pork and bbq pork, or siu yok and charsiu, is done quite well here. I particularly love the roast pork here, they’re soft, succulent, and with the crunchy skin, is absolutely fantastic. Do order a plate for sharing if you’re here.
The signature tofu at Da Tuan Yuan is their seafood tofu, with bits of seafood and some greens, they offer an adventure in texture but to be honest, I find it tastes a bit … out of the ordinary. Perhaps a dish that takes quite a bit of getting used to.
Japanese tofu, mantis shrimp, 四大天王, kangkung belacan
Japanese tofu has the consistency of egg drop soup, and makes for good comfort food, but if you want something with a kick, order the mantis shrimp with salted egg yolk. Slightly spicy, crunchy, and strong tasting, it should satisfy any seafood lover who loves their dishes deep fried.
“Four kingdom” and kangkung belacan are some of the vegetable dishes that should provides greens that may resemble sort of a balanced meal, order them so your mom won’t complain.

The actual signature dish here though, has got to be their steamed fish with minced ginger. You can order fish head or tail end, go for tail as they provide more meat, but the real fish eating connoisseur will always insist of fish head. This dish is very spicy from the huge amount of ginger, and we love it.
Other notable dishes include kam heong lala, steamed fish teow chew style, and butter mantis prawn. To be honest, we haven’t really find any disappointing dish, and that is the reason we’ve been back to Da Tuan Yuan so many times.
If you’re looking for a sumptuous non-BKT meal in Klang, this is a place worthy of visit.

This Klang native bak kut teh connoisseur thought, why not something slightly different – so we took a bit of a drive and ended up at Klang Coast Seafood Bak Kut Teh (滨海肉骨茶).

Klang Coast bak kut teh is located at Bukit Tinggi, just a stone’s throw from the huge AEON Shopping Centre, which is about half an hour’s drive from Petaling Jaya.
Parking isn’t an issue at this part of town, and if you can’t speak in Hokkien, ordering with Mandarin is perfectly acceptable.
how about bak kut teh with lala & crabs?
Seafood bak kut teh is a relatively new comer to the bak kut teh scene, after the invention of claypot bkt and dried bak kut teh. According to Zess, the operator here (a friend of his) used to be an apprentice of the original place that came up with Seafood bak kut teh in Teluk Pulai before opening his own shop.
We ordered our BKT with fatty portion of pork (tua kut aka big bone, and pua pui chiak aka 3 layer pork) with addition of clam and flower crab.
The Bak Kut Teh soup with seafood comes with a much stronger peppery taste. It was explained that this is necessary to counter the raw seafood taste that may be overpowering. This strategy was achieved after countless experimentation with pepper, chili padi, and so forth. In all honesty, I like it, I thought the herbal taste and spiciness was well balanced.
The clay pot bak kut teh was RM 12 per portion, clam cost RM 12, and the flower crab RM 14. In all, the bill for three of us was close to RM 25 per pax, a pretty decent value all things considered. Would not hesitate to revisit.
Now I want to try other seafood BKT places.

Just got back from Redang island for Project AWARE + diving trip. 2010 is now officially a diving year for me since this has turned out to be the 5th diving trip of the year after Sipadan/Mabul, 2 trips to Tenggol, and a previous trip to Redang in June.

Project AWARE is also known by the less glamourous name of International Cleanup Day whereby beach enthusiasts all over the world come together and basically spend a morning clearing up a section of beach from things that shouldn’t be there.
Our group managed to picked up some 500+ cigarette buds from just one small stretch of beach in front of a resort, and there were 5 other teams that picked up similar amount of ciggy buds and other junks too. One other interesting thing we picked up, among ropes/bottle caps/slippers/etc was a piece of soiled underwear :S
Project AWARE is usually partly sponsored by the resort, and hence we also scored 3 dives at a reduced rate. However, the visibility weren’t great, and our instructor too were reluctant to take us to some of the more interesting/challenging sites due to the larger amount of divers on each trip. This was actually my 2nd participation of Project AWARE, with the previous one all the way back in 2004 at Redang, my 2nd dive trip.
After this trip, I now logged 45 dives in total, with 31 of them from this year and 14 from 2004.
Since this is a space is sorta known as a food blog, I shall also introduce the best 3 layer tea from this side of Malaysia – the little kopitiam at Redang Beach Resort manned by an uncle. The blend of evaporated milk, tea, and palm sugar’s perfect! The lor mai kai (steamed glutinous chicken rice) is pretty awesome too!
As for accommodation, we stayed at Pelangi resort, which in my opinion is a bit better than Redang Beach resort. There’s attached toilet on each room instead of communal hostel style arrangement, for example. Food wise they’re both similarly sad though.
