A few weeks ago my buddy Terence called up and then passed the phone to Colin, and I was invited to a food tasting session.
At first I thought it was for TDH (Tom Dick and Harry’s), the popular watering hole at TTDI, but when I reached there with a hungry stomach a couple weeks ago, it turned out to be the restaurant right upstairs of TDH – Hoofed.

To be honest, I hadn’t know there’s a restaurant above TDH despite the numerous visits there. I guess it doesn’t help that one rarely gets to leave TDH with very clear vision at the end of the night.
Hoofed is a tastefully decorated restaurant, with an ambiance that rivals many a five star hotels. I particularly love the old school subway style ceiling (Colin had to personally put them on one by one).

In order to maximize the number of dishes we get to try, Hoofed prepared the dishes in small doses. I thought this is a pretty good way of handling food review, much better than having a bunch of people splitting several dishes and everyone ended up having to fight for the good stuff.
The night started with a plate of pretty interesting duck salad that comes with duck breast, century egg, 7/8 boiled egg, and fresh vegetable in vinegrete dressing. A refreshing taste that I haven’t had before, it was pretty good actually.
Hoofed prides itself in serving pork dishes, and they have suckling pig too! (whole piglet at RM 170). I was given a portion, and it was really as good as they come.

Other pork dishes I tried when I went there again for a little xmas gift exchange session last week were the really awesome roast pork, pork ribs, and pasta with fried roast pork.
I’m hesitant to say that it is the best roast pork I’ve had, but it is tough to rate it any lower than the one at Wong Kee, Pudu. They are essentially different, the version here is softer and goes well with mustard, while Wong Kee’s roast pork has a crunchier skin and fatty midsection but slightly tougher meat. They’re equally good in their own way.
Same can’t be said about the pork ribs I ordered though, while it was tender and juicy, I thought it was a tad too sweet for my liking, that kinda masked out the savory part of the meat a little.
Those who had the pasta with roast pork though, swore by it. I didn’t manage to steal some from Winnie, but boy it sure looked good.

Since I didn’t bring the bigger camera for the session, these two collages were actually hand-me-down photos from Hoofed.
The lamb shank is best enjoyed by two person as Horng ordered and couldn’t really finished it all by himself. Haze had the tenderloin steak that turned out to be slightly more cooked that she would have liked it.
I had the grilled fish during the review session and it was very good though.

To me, the most surprisingly dish at Hoofed has gotta be the fried rice. Though this place doesn’t really concentrate on a particular cuisine, fried rice seems to be an unlikely entry in their menu, and it is a damn fine plate of fried rice at that. This, and the pasta with roast pork, should be the must-try dish at Hoofed.
I’ve only tried the brownie with ice cream as far as dessert is concerned. It was good, but to be frank I’m not a big dessert person and would almost always stuff myself with more roast pork instead.

To be frank, not everything at Hoofed is spot on. I love all the pork dishes with the exception of ribs, the fried rice and fish were pretty awesome too. Some of the other dishes however, are still a work in progress, but I am sure with Colin’s attention to detail and constant communication with diners, they will improve in time.
Dishes at Hoofed is priced at a tad above average, but the ambiance and the right dishes do make up for it.

The very first Oktoberfest is said to be taken place in Munich on October 12, 1810 to commemorate the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen. They decided to do it again the very next year since it was a lot more successful than everyone anticipated.
However, it is pretty safe to say that even the original couple couldn’t have envisioned the appeal of Oktoberfest to be this huge. It took 200 years, but Oktoberfest is now a in full swing right here in KL! (someone should edit the Oktoberfest Celebrations article in Wikipedia if it’s not done already).
Five big celebrations of Oktoberfest happened right here in Malaysia, SOULed Out, Sid’s TTDI, and Laundry Bar in KL, Upper Penang Road in, well, Penang, and Waterfront in Kota Kinabalu.

I went to Sid’s to break my Oktoberfest virginity.
To be honest, the celebration turned out to be quite a lot bigger than I had anticipated. There was a big tent set up outside Sid’s, with hundreds of people partying right on the streets (this despite the fact that it was a weekday too), check out the video above.

It was an awesome party, with dancing, singing, lotsa great beer – Tiger, Guinness, Heineken, Paulaner, Kilkenny, Strongbow.
One of the things we did over the evening was getting people to sign up under our team. Everyone was friendly, and everyone was super happy, it was a blast.
This being at Sid’s, there’s always food that goes well with Oktoberfest, and of course I didn’t waste the opportunity to have some awesome pork sausage for dinner!
This is gonna be bigger next year, I’m already anticipating Oktoberfest 2011, bring it on!
I remember many many years ago when I was really young, there was this incident of contamination with a batch of lou shu fun that was served in a primary school somewhere in Malaysia that resulted in death of several small children.
After that tragic incident, the popularity of this unique noodle went down (at least in Penang) for quite a number of years. In fact, I don’t think it has fully recovered.
KY and Cheesie at Mama Kitchen Restaurant, TTDI
I recall we used to be able to order lou shu fun at most kueh teow soup places, these days, you only find them in several specific lou shu fun places. One of the more famous ones is Mama Kitchen Restaurant at TTDI.
Cheesie and I went there the other day for dinner. We ordered the signature clay pot lou shu fun, rice with fried roast pork, and spinach with century egg soup.

The clay pot lou shu fun (RM 
came with plenty of minced pork and that signature raw egg on top. You usually mix it all up and let the egg gets cooked in heat still retained from the pot. Very rich and flavorful
What is better than roast pork? Fried roast pork (RM 6) of course! If you haven’t had it yet, give this a try. There are plenty of fried garlic to go with the crunchy roast pork too. It was not bad at all.
The vegetable dish (RM 6) was ordered to give some sense of balance and a dosage of vitamin C (basically for cheesie to show her mom).
Despite the popularity of this place, I like the fact that they still manage to keep the price very reasonable. With drinks, the bill came to less than RM 25 for the two of us.

Sid’s pub is one of the very few places in town that is not only dog and kid friendly, but also serves up pretty good English/Irish food. The place is slowly becoming one of the places we frequent with Gareth and Kim when Charlie the dog is around. A few weeks ago Horng, Suan, and I went there to test out their kid friendly environment.

Sid’s is set up like a typical pub, with solid wooden furniture that aren’t placed too close to each other and a big bar at the center. Parking is also typically not a stressful exercise as there are plenty of space around the single row of shop houses opposite the condominium.
The pub is usually rather packed at night especially during important sporting events. However, seats are aplenty during lunch sessions especially on weekends.

I’ve tried quite a few of their dishes, pork vindaloo (RM 26) which is a type of pork curry with rice and chips, the bbq pork ribs (RM16) and fried sausage, onions & chillies (RM 16) that makes very good beer snacks, the scrum of bangers (RM 28) that comes with pork, chicken, or lamb & cranberry sausages with mash potato and baked beans.
All of them tasted pretty good, very hearty and very wholesome, but my favorite has got to be Sid’s burger. I’ve always asked for pork (chicken, lamb, and beef available) patty with bacon and cheese. The burger goes for RM 16 with RM 2 for each extra topping. The whole serving would be RM 22 if you decided to add the fried egg in addition to bacon and cheese, or for RM 28, you can have it with double patties, insane.

The burger also come with generous portion of fries and some really good mustard that goes so well with the pork. With the fats from bacon and the thick slice of cheese on top of everything, it’s just very succulent and super delicious. I love it.

Other than good food, Sid’s also serve one of the best Guinness drought in town, along with other types of alcohol. Give it a try, you don’t have to go there only if you need to find a dog friendly place.

Chinese New Year ang pow came early this year for me. It arrived in a form of a lamp post that my car so cheerily embraced with most passion and enthusiasm late last night. The post ended up leaning at 70 degree imitating the more famous tower somewhere in Italy. I’m not sure if TTDI will become a tourist destination anytime soon though.
the night I couldn’t decide to go left nor right
So I was heading from Damansara Utama to pick up Mellissa at TTDI plaza around 2 am last night, happily driving in a leisure speed (everyone’s leisure speed differs). There was a yellow and black kelisa in front of me at the last traffic light before the fateful junction. We stopped for red, and when it was green, I didn’t pass the little CLK, I wasn’t fast.
And suddenly I saw Brunsfield, the indication of the left turn. I tried to turn but the intersection came up too soon, left, no no, right, ahhh brake! brake! brake! crap… BAM!
Tried turning this into a dream so I can just wake up and wipe off the cold sweat. Failed.
I was alert and alright, called Mellissa and then walked out of the car. There were quite a few people who gathered around the side of the road already. Most of them were amazed that I walked away from the scene unscathed. My habit of wearing the 4 point harness at all time saved me.
About 5 minutes after the incident, I suddenly felt like passing out. I had to hold on to the road signs, and actually sat down for a while, only to regain my composure about 10 minutes later.

Police came pretty soon though, and did the usual checking my driver’s license and IC procedures. Mellissa called Nicholas who arrived shortly. Before they towed the car, I just decided to take some pictures, and one of the policemen actually suggested I should have a picture with the car and he volunteered to be the camera man too, but the picture above was taken by Nicholas as the police decided perhaps Nicholas is a better cameraman.
We took some stuff from the car just before they towed it. Nicholas then fetched us to the police station where I filed a report. The car was towed to the station and photos were taken by this policeman who was supremely proud of the Sony digital camera he was in charged of. We then headed to mamak before Nicholas sent us home.
It was over 5am when I reached home, sore shoulders but otherwise unharmed. Thank you Nicholas for helping out when I needed most. I owe you one.
I am a very lucky man, for more reasons than just being able to walk away from this wreck unharmed.
