KY parties - Nokia N-Gage, Happy, and Hennessy Artistry

It was a particularly eventful two week period prior to the start of this month. There were three events I attended, the Nokia N-Gage launch and Happy winner announcement invited by PR extraordinaire David Lian and the Hennessy Artistry at Aloha from Nuffnang thanks to Nicholas.

Nokia N-Gage launch
notice the N96? Jason, Suan, Kim, and Wenqi was there too

The Nokia N-Gage launch fell on the 22nd at Cafe Libre. We were introduced with the Nokia N-Gage gaming platform with their latest games, and I got a free full fledge game for my N82 from the good people at Nokia!

Mobile gaming has actually came a very long way, the graphics on my phone is just as good as the first generation PlayStation console, and you can even hook it on TV to play. As connectivity is everything on a mobile phone, many games also support multi-player gaming via N-Gage arena. You can compare score, play with each other, read reviews and ratings on new games, buy games online, and even chatting up with fellow gamers.

The game that I chose (we were given one free game) was the Space Impact Kappa Base, I remember playing the very same title on Sheryl’s old Nokia monochrome phone some 5-6 years ago when we were staying in Northern Virginia. The graphic is so awesome now and I found myself rather addicted to it. Newspaper is now optional in toilet. Check it out, awesome stuff.

Happy Event at North Point
Yeay Kim and I won the newspaper dancing game! (pics from Louis Photography)

Last Tuesday was the Happy Moment winner announcement event at Isthmus (their chicken wing was very good!), Mid Valley North Point. The participants from the top Happy blog entries and Happy videos were presence. I was very impressed with the top 2 videos shown, the organizer was torn between the two and ended up giving two first prize instead. See them here.

Of course, every Happy event comes with fun & games. I won myself some Jusco voucher again. Me and Kim also participated in this standing on newspaper dancing contest thingy and won it thanks to our awesome fit body that are also space efficient. The prize was some Body Shop merchandise that I could actually use as well. Nice!

Henessy Artistry at Aloha
Aloooohaaaa, party people! (pics from Jack)

Last Saturday’s Hennessy Artistry at Aloha was one of the better clubbing nights I can remember. Free booze all night long (not that I can drink at all), plenty of friends in the VIP area. Nuffnang had 3 tables with a few dozen people at the event, it was awesome.

People on photo:
1: Nicholas, KY, Eiling
2: Rachel, KY, Nicholas, Dree
3: Yap Thomas, KY, Nadia
4: KY & Rachel

The drinks were good, and music pretty decent, but above all, of course, is the company. There were some old buddies like shiang, dree, and new friends whom I’ve met less than a couple times, like chocolate lady Eiling and sister, the lanky Yap Thomas, the party girl Nadia, the drunkard Stephanie Kok, and more. It was fun!

I’m tired.

Suanie's 25th Birthday

To the Suan,

Happy happy birthday to you. Remember what happened on your last birthday at Bangsar? I’m glad that we are slightly further away from those kind of slightly unhealthy lifestyle these days. The starbucks and french fries was a better alternative, lets have some of that tonight, shall we? Forget the Atkins for a day and have a feast. Welcome to the quarter century mark!

Fancy durian, anyone?

KY eats - Mexican Restaurant at USJ Taipan, Las Carretas

So the Suan was feeling like having Mexican food since she claimed she never had it before (despite being a Chilis frequent visitor.) Together with Kenneth and FA, we headed to Las Carretas at USJ Taipan, took us a while and a phone call to dree to finally figure out the restaurant that I last went more than one year ago.

Las Carretas at USJ Taipan
At last, we found it!

Las Carretas is a pretty nicely decorated restaurant with great ambiance. Though the Indian waiter did not remind me of banjo playing Mexican, the interior design and various decorative items does bring back the memory of similar establishments I visited while in the States. Consistent with every proper Mexican dining place, a plate of complimentary chips and salsa is served.

Complimentary chips & salsa. Alcoholic drinks for FA & Suan

I ordered lamb shank (memory told me that it was good), FA had tacos, burritos for Suan, and Kenneth went with Quesadillas as recommended by the waiter. As proper alcoholics, FA & Suan also had cosmopolitan cocktails or something like that.

The food, slurps..

The food did not disappoint, rich in flavor and strong in taste like how Mexican food is. However, for some it might be a little lacking in the spicy department. I suspect the chef merely tries to cater to the less tolerant group, I guess you can always order yours to have that extra kick, and a bottle of tabasco sauce accompanies the dishes anyway.

My lamb shank was very tender and well cooked. The portion is a little too big though, I did not able to finish the pasta that came with it. The taste of herbs in the gravey was subtle, not overpowering the natural taste of the meat.

The happy diners

If you’re into trying new things, give this place a go. With pretty good food and excellent atmosphere, it makes a pretty good place for bringing your date. Price wise, entrees are between RM 20 to RM 40. Prices for drinks is comparable to places such as TGIF and Chilis, however, FA (no, not FemaleAlcoholic) reported that the cocktail is potent and they did not skim on the alcohol, she likes it that way.

KY eats - Best Rawang Steamed Tilapia, Sister Lan’s

With horny’s awesome driving skill, we somehow arrived at Sungai Buloh, when we had initially wanted to go to Puchong Kepong for bak kut teh. Since we were already pretty much half way to Rawang, we decided to go the extra mile to sample the famous Steamed Tilapia fish at ‘Sister Lan’ (Lan Cheh in Cantonese) road side restaurant.

check out my pro way of eating a fish!

The fish was really good, it was the best tilapia I’ve ever had. They steam it with alot of diced garlic, very finely shredded ginger, and some chopped chili padi. The sauce is a very light blend of soya with some other sauce. All these is topped with some parsley and sliced spring onion.

now look at suan’s noob way of annihilating her lunch

The ingredients, especially the strong aroma of ginger, garlic, and parsley, were especially effective in doing away the undesireable smell that is often associated with fresh water fish such as tilapia. The fish is steamed just right, properly cooked and yet not overly done, which left the meat still very tender. The sauce was just the right taste that I hardly have to reach for the soya saucer.

we had something else going together with the fish too

Other than the fish, we ordered 2 dishes of vege and a prawn entry to complete the meal. The salted prawn was excellent, fried baby kailan was passable, but do avoid the kangkung belacan as it was not even average.

Overall, this is definately a place worth visiting if you do not mind t he half hour drive from KL. The tilapia is a must-eat and the salted prawn was also one of the best I’ve had.

omg my mad skillz in map

I am guessing most of us aren’t very familiar with Rawang, so here’s a slightly in depth direction.

  • From KL, using the PLUS highway, take the Rawang exit
  • After pay toll, go straight till you find a T junction, take a right to Rawang
  • Go straight, pass a few intersections, till you are going up a slope, turn right at the traffic light on top of the slope (which is also an overhead bridge)
  • Go straight for almost a kilometer or so till you pass a pedestrian bridge overhead
  • The restaurant will be on your left just about a hundred meters or so after the bridge
  • Enjoy the fish!

Business hour is 11am to 3pm for lunch, and 6 to 10:30pm for dinner, closed on Tuesday.

KY eats - Kedah Asam Laksa at Alisan, SS4, PJ

How many times has it occured in your mind that you so want to go to Penang just so you get to devour the asam laksa there? Well, if you’re a laksa lover living not too far from PJ, you have salvation. According to kerol and suanie, this shit is teh good. (I’m not a huge laksa fan, and prefer real dinner like bak kut teh, heehee)

Kedah Asam Laksa at Alisan SS4, PJ
suan and kerol look so happy!

The stall is situated at this eating place called Alisan, basically a mamak + kopitiam type of setting, with numerous hawker stalls offering fried lala, yong tau foo, wan tan mee, and of course, the laksa. According to kerol, this laksa is of the Kedah style, which is slightly less soupy than the Penang type, but otherwise pretty much the same.

Asam Laksa at SS4 Alisan PJ
This plate shouldn’t be hard to clean..

The asam laksa is served in a plate rather than a bowl, and comes with generous portion of chillie padi on the side. In the plate there are your standard laksa noodle, shrimp sauce, fish based soup, chopped vege, cucumber, and some other stuff that I cannot name. It’s delicious, that is why these 2 girls finished it clean even after just having a heavy dinner less than 2 hours prior. I didn’t eat, I was still full. hehe

A thing to note though, this laksa stall is like the superstar of the hawker stalls at this area. It had been on some chinese newspapers twice since I moved there. As a result, it is always pretty busy and they ask that you self-serve. Other than laksa, they have pretty good Jawa Mee, Chai Kuih, and some Chinese dessert soup/drink. The laksa is RM 3.50 if I remember correctly.

Call me when you go there, I am only 5 mins away on foot.

P/S: Peter Tan is having a charity drive and he’s SHAVING HIS HEAD FOR HOSPICE, please do lend your support, thanks thanks thanks.
