Restaurant Teochew Lao Er was discovered pretty much accidentally by us. One one fateful noon over the weekends, Haze and I had initially wanted to go to Wong Kee for some roast pork (best you can find in KL really), but when we reached there, the roast pork had already ran out.
I then recommended that we try Sui Kau mee around the corner, so we drove around in search for a parking space. We ended up right in front of this new-looking restaurant by the name of Teochew Lao Er.

Since fate had landed us right in front of the restaurant, I thought we might as well give it a try. There’s air conditioning, and it was packed, I supposed that can’t be bad for a hot afternoon. We went straight in and took a seat on the first floor.

We made our orders and waited for less than 5-10 minutes when they came. That is the best thing about teochew porridge places (even though this one is sorta new age and a little different), most of the foods are already cooked, and you don’t need to wait for ages before food is served.
For the two of us, we ordered a total of five dishes. On hindsight, that was a little too much, but I just can’t help myself then.
The Teochew red stew duck (RM 10) was pretty generous in portion. It was succulent, soft, and flavorful, went really well with the sweet potato porridge (RM 1.20) for sure.

Then there’s the signature fried grouper skin (RM 8). If you love fish skin, this is an absolute must-try over here. I don’t actually see it served at anywhere else, an absolute delight! it is served with some soy beans, chili padi, and tomato sauce. I could have only this and porridge and life would be complete.
The teochew stew pork belly (RM 5) and stew intestine (RM 4) came in the same soya based sauce and both were as good as any I’ve tried.

The lone vegetable dish we ordered was the petai (RM 8) that was prepared with sambal and anchovies. To be honest, this was an average dish and perhaps not one that goes well with porridge. But four excellent dishes out of five that we ordered? I’ll call that a success!
I want to go back there again, pronto!

Before heading to Malones for a food review session, I had somehow cooked dinner for 5 days in a row, which must be a record. The review session came as a nice break from doing the dishes, so it was all good. 😀
This review is in conjunction to Malones’ St. Patrick dishes, which suddenly reminds me that we are already in March, 2011! I was still trying to write 2010 on my notepad…

Since Sooka Sentral is just right across the street from KL Sentral Suanie and I took the train there, it was RM 2.00 well spent, no getting stuck in traffic jam, best.
Malones is its own building, surrounded by high rise office towers with the LRT line zipping right next to it, giving the place a very metro feel while devoid of cars, I like. We were greeted by the friendly Hui Peng of G2, and May of Malones (who also invited me to EEST while at her previous job.)
Guinness infused beef stew
First dish to come was the Guinness infused Beef Stew (RM 29.90), and yes, it was my favorite dish of the night. The beef was very tender and with a strong hint of Guinness flavor in the savory sauce. The vegetable in the stew was done just right too, it didn’t take the slightest of pressure to bite the carrot and celery that are both well flavored.

Then we had Irish Sausage on Colcannon and Guinnness Onion Gravy (RM 30.90), they are made of chicken, lamb, and beef. Calcannon is basically mash potato with cabbage, a traditional Irish dish. I like the chicken & beef sausages more than the lamb, and they do go better with a tad of mustard. It was also the first time I had calcannon, and I like it!
Guinness Beef Burger (RM24.90) came with a super thick beef patty that’s marinated with Guinness, then cooked to perfection with melted cheese on top. Sumptuous, almost too rich, but absolutely satisfying.

Last dish for the night was Malones Beef Ribs with Guinness Sauce (RM 29.90). I am usually not a very big beef rib fan (preferring pork, of course, but Malones is pork free, in fact, the only pork free Irish pubs in town), but the XL size beef rib (yah, singular) was actually very impressive.
It was so tender and easily cut even just with spoons, absolutely delicious!

Jason and Tock were the other two bloggers, and we had a good time catching up. Tock and I play futsal occasionally (he’s supposed to be a regular but the fella always ffk), and Jason just moved to KL from Malacca not long ago.
The menu is available now, and on St. Patrick’s day, Malones have a special deal whereby for RM 99, you get on the St Patrick’s Bus Tour that takes you to four different locations, with food & drinks at and on the way, pretty sweet deal I think! Do check it out ya!

Korean house is one of the newest restaurants at the very competitive diner’s district that is PJ SS2. I drove past the restaurant quite a number of times before decided to head in and have a look just a while ago. After all, the place does look pretty busy, and a busy restaurant is usually not bad.

Now, there are 2 ways you can have Korean food, the cheap way (like at Mu Gong He, Haeun Khon) or you can have a feast with the Korean specialty, the BBQ. Fresh meat don’t come cheap, but sometimes the urge on my taste buds overcome my financial brain cells. Like this particular meal.

For 2 person, we ordered a serving of Joomooluck (marinated beef, similar to Galbi) and a serving of Samgyeopsal (pork belly), Kimchi jjigae (Kimchi Stew), and some rice. Of course, the Banchan (side dishes, 9 types in this case) comes free. On top of that, we got a corn on hotplate and an egg dish on the house. Plenty of food for two fellas.

Service at this place, and in fact as most other Korean restaurants I have been, was pretty good. The servers were attentive and they grilled the meat for you, so you don’t have to worry about getting your hands dirty. Though the portion of the meat dishes were actually slightly smaller than other places, the taste was good, and the variety of Banchan makes up for it.
The side dishes too, were of decent standard. We were given kimchi, tofu, clams, bean spouts, vegetables, potato salad, anchovies, and a few other things i can’t name. As with many other Korean restaurants, Korean House serves free wheat tea (cold), the taste is a cross of wheat and tea (what else), a bit strange at first, but I actually enjoy it.

This rather lavish meal costs around RM 100 for the two of us, including 5% government tax and another 5% service charge. Price wise this is in line with most Korean restaurants.
