The most popular Chinese dinner in Klang Valley is usually of the tai chao (大炒) variety, and while being able to order a huge variety of made-to-order dishes that comes out of a hot kitchen with plenty of fire power is neat, sometimes all you want is few comfort dishes to satisfy the hunger in relatively healthier fashion, such as those on the menu of Chia Yee Salted Chicken restaurant.

The restaurant is adjacent to the much more popular Da Tuan Yuan at Bandar Baru Klang, a stone’s throw away from Bukit Raja Jusco shopping mall.

The set up is clean, simple, and with minimum fuss. The menu consists of a few pages of choices with some pictures, and there are cutlery’s on the table, with urns of chili sauce strategically placed at a few condiment stations.

For the two of us, we had 1/2 a salted chicken (RM 20), a portion of steamed egg (RM 6), and blanched choy sum (RM 4).

The kampung chicken was smaller in size compared to regular variety, but is pretty firm, flavorful, and presumably healthier due to having less fat and perhaps lack of growth hormones. The steamed egg was done quite nicely, reminding me of the version we had at K.T.L Cheras, there’s a hint of sesame oil in the dish which I liked.

As for blanched choy sum, well, it provided sufficient fiber, vitamin C, and color contrast to the picture, so it did its job well.

Overall it was a simple dinner and one that I sometimes find myself cherish. This is a restaurant we will most likely revisit, since Haze is quite a fan of salted chicken.

One of the more popular thing to do for many restaurant owners is to name their restaurant with the place the business is conducted from. After all, it is convenient for anyone to remember, and also make it sounds a lot more legitimate.

That is, until you expand to another location. One of such example is the confusingly named Peel Road Yong Tau Foo located at Sungai Way, our subject of this entry.

Update 21/11/2014: unfortunately this place has already changed to a “tai chao” operation and no longer serve yong tau foo

We actually stumbled upon this place as Sing Kee was closed when we wanted to go for their asam fish a couple weeks ago. Since this shack/restaurant seems to be offering more than just yong tau foo, we thought why not?

As it turns out, the place is more of a tai chau restaurant that happen to offer yong tau foo.

Naturally, we ordered a selection of yong tau foo as appetizer.

True to the name, the YTF here were actually rather good, with the fuchuk particularly tasty. The tofu, chili, bitter gourd, brinjal and such did not disappoint either. The stuffing is a little heavy but we liked it nonetheless.

For the six of us, we ordered another four dishes to go with rice for everyone.

The steamed egg was smooth n silky with a hint of sesame oil, reminding me of the version we had at K.T.L. Cheras. The vegetable more than passable, in addition to ticking off the vitamin C requirement in every meal.

The third dish, bitter gourd chicken, was also pretty decent, though not exactly the best version I’ve tried.

However, the curry fish head here turned out to be superb. We asked for grouper head which isn’t very commonly available in Klang Valley, but in my opinion, the best candidate for curry fish head. The version here has a thick flavorful gravy and packed with extra vegetables that adds to the overall experience. If I had to order only one dish from here, this would be it.

Over all this branch of Peel Road YTF at Sungai Way makes for  a more than decent dinner option. We ended up paying around RM 15 or so per person.

From time to time, I like to go into a restaurant totally devoid of any idea what is being served there. Last weekend was one such occasion. Haze and I were near Leisure Mall and hungry, we drove around a bit, parked the car, and decided to head into Restaurant K.T.L – which stands for Kwong Tau Lou (光头佬, bald guy)

The reason we chose this particular restaurant was that it looked cheap, almost unfurnished, and yet filled with mostly older diners & families. To me, these are a sure sign that good food is available, and it won’t break your wallet.

After seated, we asked for recommendations from the wait staff and ordered a steamed tilapia with tao chio (beans), steamed egg, and a plate of vegetable. Total dishes to choose from was very limited, there’s 2 types of fish (other being haruan), always steamed but with a few different variations, eggs, steamed ribs, and a few types of vegetables. Just as well, makes ordering quite a lot easier.

Dishes didn’t come quick, and you have the pleasure of seeing them catch the tilapia that’ll end up on your table.

But when it does, boy, the fish was great! The tao chio sauce was very flavorful and quite a bit spicy too, they even stuffed it full in the fish’s cavity too, a nice touch for sure.

The steamed egg was on a big plate but very thin, and very very soft. Imagine the softest chawanmushi, and this was 3 times softer. It tasted very simple yet awesome, with soya sauce and a hint of sesame oil on it. (I tried to replicate the steamed egg at home the other day and failed miserably)

The only let down at the place was the vegetable. Well, it wasn’t bad, it was average, but after the fish and egg, this was slightly disappointing.

The dinner came to be slightly less than RM 20 per person including two Chinese tea. For fresh fish and excellent dishes, it was a steal. Definitely will go there again.
