That being said, I think a plate of good old fashion fried rice is the perfect dish when you really want to have that stomach filled up good.
When it comes to good old fashion fried rice for lunch, one of the best places you can go to Restoran Hup Soon at Petaling Jaya SS3.

The operator from the stall that specialize fried rice is originally from Kedah and has been operating in the same stall for over a decade, serving up the same recipe from all those years.
A plate of fried rice comes with finely chopped long beans & char siu, egg, crunchy bean sprouts, and prawns. I’d also strongly suggest that you ask for an additional fried egg that’s perfectly fried with the egg yolk that remains runny.

The fried rice is also served with some chili padi for those who loves a bit of kick, tho I think it’ll really be perfect if there’s some proper Penang sambal here.

Despite staying at SS3, I seldom venture into the commercial area arguably nearest to where I stay for dinner. Restaurant Double Joy was actually introduced by Shiang, one of my futsal buddies, who was in turn introduced to this “tai chao” place by one of his friends, a regular customer.
Restaurant Double Joy, PJ SS3
The restaurant is located at an unassuming shop lot on Jalan SS 3/37. Parking is usually a pretty simple affair, but the restaurant does get crowded if you don’t get there early enough.
The dining area is air conditioned (except for a couple tables on the walk way), and the place is kept pretty clean and comfortable for a restaurant of this standard.
3 cup chicken, fish head with fermented soya bean, simple vege dish
For the five of us, we ordered four dishes to go with steamed rice for dinner.
The three cup chicken was quite flavorful but slightly to the sweeter side, which goes well with steamed rice and a bit of chili padi. For those who likes a stronger tasting chicken cooked in clay pot, “fa tiu kai” would be a better choice, and my favorite would be the version at Kien Kee Seri Kembangan (which also serves very good spicy soup).
The fish head with fermented soya bean is one of the dishes that’s quite special. The sauce hits the palate just the right way. If you’re a fan of fish head, this is a version that you must try.
clay pot pork with yam, best consume while piping hot
Another unique dish here was the clay pot pork with yam. The pork was very tender, and the yam cooked to the point they pretty much blend together with the sauce. It was a dish that is very rich and satisfying, but also one that you have to eat while piping hot, lest it become too overwhelmingly sticky. I really enjoyed this.
As always, we also ordered a plate of green vegetable to satisfy the illusion of ingesting some fiber with vitamin C. This dish was not very eventful, but aren’t they always?

The meal came to be around RM 15 or so per person, I’d put Restaurant Double Joy right up there with the likes of Lucky Loke so far as tai chau goes, and would love to re-visit to try their other dishes again.
Nasi Lemak Itik Salai, now that’s something that you don’t commonly see. We are used to nasi lemak having sotong (squid), ayam goreng (fried chicken), daging rendang (beef), and for the non-halal version, even pork; but itik salai (smoked duck)? That’s pretty interesting so far as Malaysia’s national dish nasi lemak goes.

Izwan Woon Abdullah, located just behind Taman Bahagia LRT station
The restaurant that offers this dish is Izwan Woon Abdullah, located just behind Taman Bahagia LRT station at SS3, a few doors down from the famous pork noodle and Luckly Loke tai chao at the corner.
nasi lemak itik salai, you don’t see this very often
The restaurants offer nasi lemak and a few other more traditional Malay dishes, but I had to try their nasi lemak itik salai.
The plate comes with fragrant nasi lemak on a slice of banana leaf, a side of sambal, anchovies & peanuts, half a hard boiled egg, smoked duck, and some brown sauce for the duck.
The brown sauce though, was a waste of time, so we asked for more sambal instead, which more than made up for it. 😀

The sambal was top notch, spicy and very flavorful, and the duck tasted pretty close to Chinese style smoked duck but with a slightly different taste that I can’t exactly point out, it was good, and certainly a different experience being paired with nasi lemak. I find myself enjoying it.

Their nasi lemak with chicken was able to satisfy one of the biggest nasi lemak fan in Horng, and otak-otak Johor (RM 0.80 per stick) was delicious enough we ordered second servings (even Suan who was from Johor approved of the taste).
The restaurant has been in business some 2-3 months and I sure hope it stays. I’ve only been there a couple times but looking forward to head there more often. =)

Lucky Loke tai chau (大炒) stall is situated just a stone’s throw away from where I live, and naturally I have been there on quite a number of occasions. However, due to the poor quality of pictures taken on previous visits, I have not had the chance to post about this place until now.

Lucky Loke is quite an established tai chau place, always the busiest among the 3 places that are around the same area. We decided to have some decent dinner there after coming back from a rather enjoyable karting session last Saturday.
But first, allow me to digress a bit:
In the morning, Kelvin asked Kerol “hey wanna go kart?”
“huh? I don’t have, why do you want it?”
We were quite puzzled until we figured out that she didn’t have Gold Card, only Silver Cards..

Anyway, for the 3 of us, we ordered the must-eat signature dish that is the garlic fish (siakap), asam prawn, and a plate of Hong Kong kailan. Naturally, we have white rice to go with these dishes.

The garlic fish was excellent as usual. Served with plenty of raw garlic and chili padi on top of the deep fried fish with their special sauce (tasted like fish sauce with some vinegar and other ingredients), the texture of the fish and the taste was just right. Having it deep fried also mean that we didn’t have to worry too much on the bones.
The asam prawn was surprisingly good too, the asam base was very thick and flavorful. There’s garlic, egg plant, and tomato as garnish to the main item, the big size tiger prawns. It was just as good as the one served at restaurant Hoowan at Kelana Jaya. The Hong Kong kailan tasted a bit old this time, but it was still alright.

The dinner costs about RM 17 for each of us, not the most economical meal there is, but we are still plenty satisfied, it was just so good. Lucky Loke is also famous for their pork rib (phai kuat wong, 排骨王), you should give it a try if you haven’t yet.

This is the pork noodle stall that I love to hate, the source of minor traffic jam to the main entrance of the housing area where I stay. The thing is, the noodle is actually pretty good, if you can wait.
over a dozen bowls at a time
A bowl of pork noodle comes with sliced pork, intestine, slices of liver, minced pork, and some vegetables with your choice of noodle (kueh teow, mee, or mee hun). The clear soup is cooked with the pork, and the everything is spiced up with sprinkles of Chinese preserved vegetable, salt, and pepper. Topping everything off (and I always ask for more) is the super unhealthy but ultra tasty fried pork lard.
The end result is instant gastronomical satisfaction, especially if you are a guy that loves pork. The soup is just right, the meat tastes good, it all goes well with some soya sauce and chili padi provided. The intestine though, requires some hardcore chewing, but interestingly one of my friends like it that way.

At around RM 4.00 per bowl, the pork noodle is slightly more pricey than the usual rate, but within the acceptable range. Expect to wait for more than half an hour during weekends though. The old man cooks over a dozen bowls at each go but takes probably close to 10 minutes per round, never sacrificing quality for speed. The wait isn’t as bad during weekdays non-lunch hours.

The pork noodle stall doesn’t start serving before 9am and usually operates until about 2 something in the afternoon. The restaurant is just a normal kopitiam at the same row of shop houses with the SS3 post office. About 2 minute’s walk from the Taman Bahagia LRT station. you can walk to this place from the LRT station
