KY eats – Pork Intestine Porridge at Say Huat, Seksyen 17

June 4, 2012 24 Comments

Pork intestine porridge is also a dish that isn’t nearly as common these days as it used to be. I suspect this has something to do with the idea that pig innards aren’t exactly the healthiest thing out there, and younger generations are usually less familiar with them.

While being from a relatively “young” generation, I on the other hand, absolutely love them. I always believe that you can and should eat everything in moderation, and a little bit of innards now and then never hurt, especially if you have a balance diet and exercise on regular basis (everyone knows about this anyway..)

Anyway, just the other day I found myself at Seksyen 17 having an hour to kill, so as a Penangite, the natural thing to do was to find a place to sit and eat, and that’s how I ended up at restaurant Say Huat, having Robert’s Char Kuih Teow in my mind.

My attention was drew to the porridge stall when I got there, and a glance on the menu confirmed that they serve pork intestine porridge – it was then I decided I gotta have this.

For RM 4.50, this is perhaps the most beautiful bowl of porridge you can get. The surface is completely covered with crispy deep fried pork intestine,  yao char kuai, spring onion, and ginger. It was a work of art.

Inside there’s also chunks of pork (with soft bone), liver, and of course, the porridge that is topped with some soya sauce, pepper, and sesame oil. The texture of the congee was soft, smooth, and actually perhaps just slightly too thick.

Over all though, it was still a very decent bowl of good old pork intestine porridge, if you like it lighter, try the seapark version, but if you want it heavy, and not to mention excellent value for money, this one won’t disappoint.

Robert Char Kueh Teow at Restaurant Say Huat, Seksyen 17

July 18, 2010 42 Comments

Most everyone who are originally from Penang is a fan of Char Kueh Teow, myself included. While this particular dish hasn’t really found its rival outside the island, there are actually several places right here in Klang Valley that are certainly more than good enough to satisfy my cravings from time to time.

I’ve heard and read about Robert Char Kueh Teow quite for quite a while, but for whatever reason the few kopitiams at Seksyen 17 remains to be pretty unexplored to me.

I got the cravings again the other day, and this time I made it a point to head over to this famed stall.

Char Kueh Teow

The stall is located amongst the dozen of so other offerings within restaurant Say Huat with the friendly owner, Robert, busy frying away. I made our orders, 2 plates of Char Kueh Teow with everything.

Some 10 minutes later, we got our servings. The plate of Char Kueh Teow comes with all the ingredients: flat noodle, bean sprouts, chives, prawns, lap cheong (Chinese sausage), egg, tiny bits of salted vegetable, and of course, lard too.

I must say that Robert CKT lives up to the expectations. The combination of all the classic ingredients, and the availability of pork lard of course contributed to the overall “original” Penang CKT taste. Now if only they could add massive prawns….

KY eats – Mince Pork Nasi Lemak at 6 to 10 Nasi Lemak and Grill

March 30, 2009 47 Comments

This is the ultimate unlikely combination when it comes to Asian food. An plate of oxymoron of traditional Malay (and hence, usually halal) food with a Chinese/Nyonya twist to it. Ladies and gentlemen, please meet the star of the day – nasi lemak with mince pork sambal.

6 to 10 nasi lemak and grill
mince pork sambal, curry chicken, and that fragrant rice

I’m not sure where else is this combination available, but 6 to 10 Nasi Lemak and Grill at seksyen 17 is one of those very rare places that serves non-halal nasi lemak. I have previously blogged about their Western Food in this post (pretty tasty and rather economical), but it actually took me a while to try their famous nasi lemak. I didn’t know what I had missed for so long.

6 to 10 nasi lemak and grill
suan, horng, and “aunty” enjoying their nasi lemak

The standard nasi lemak comes with rice, fried ikan bilis (anchovies) and peanuts, sambal with onion, a few slices of cucumber, and half a hard boiled egg. You can then choose to add a number of extra ingredients, including mince pork sambal, cuttle fish, beef rendang, or curry chicken.

The mince pork sambal is the must-order, if only for the “I’ve had it too” factor. The pork and sambal combination works well, and made perfect with the fresh lime juice squeezed on it. Spicy and a tad tangy, flavorful, and that unmistakable taste of delicious pork. You just have to try it.

6 to 10 nasi lemak and grill
cuttle fish and beef rendang too

The cuttle fish is one of their most ordered ingredients too, with it’s perfect texture and spicy strong flavor, it is not hard to see why. I also tried a chunk of the pretty tasty beef rendang without being disappointed, and the curry chicken too, received positive feedback from my lunch buddies.

A plate of standard nasi lemak with one extra ingredient goes for RM 7.00, two for RM 10.50, and three for RM 13.50 or RM 14. Definitely not among the cheapest nasi lemak around town, but you do pay for quality and taste I suppose, and I just went there twice in the last two weeks.

KY eats – Vegetarian food at Kuan Yin Restaurant, PJ Seksyen 17

January 10, 2007 23 Comments

If you have been following this blog, you will suspect that I am mostly a meat person, since this is the first vegetarian food posts, of the 142 done thus far. Truth of the matter is not that I don’t love my vegetables, but rather I have always maintain that we should get our greens served as what they are, not disguised as some fake chicken, fish, or meat… and then I was somehow convinced by this joker to go to Kuan Yin restaurant.

mat salleh loving the char siu

As the name of the restaurant suggests, this place serves Chinese vegetarian food. Not only all the food are prepared with non meat ingredients, neither garlic nor onion are used, this is to satisfy the “rules” of the “religious” vegetarian practiced in this country.

However, if you look at the menu, you will find many titles of meat dishes. All of these dishes are, of course, made from non meat ingredients. Funny isn’t it? How can anyone claim to be a vegetarian but eats dishes that tastes exactly like meat? (my main reason of not visiting vegetarian restaurants)

there is no meat here

For dinner, the four of us ordered a fried vegetable with clear sauce, “mutton” curry, Thai style “chicken”, “Char Siu” with mantou, and a radish soup (free).

To my surprise, the food were actually good. The chicken was a bit “fake”, but tasted decent nonetheless. The mutton curry tasted like very tender mutton, and the curry sauce was great, I had no idea how they can prepare it without using onion and garlic but still maintain the aroma and taste of curry that we are accustomed to.

ahhh, the imitation char siu… slurps

The best dish of the day though, was the Char Siu with mantao. They were in fact, better than most the REAL char siu I have tasted in my life. I will go back there just to have this particular dish.

The bill came to be slightly less than RM 20 per person. Pretty good value considering how much other places charge for similar dishes.

so now you know how to get to seksyen 17

I would not recommend a religious vegetarian to have fake meat and chicken as I think that is principally wrong, but this is an excellent place to bring your Muslim friends to have a taste of Chinese food.

KY eats – 6 to 10 Grill & Nasi Lemak at Seksyen 17, PJ

August 28, 2006 26 Comments

I was informed of 6 to 10 grill & nasi lemak by one of my housemates who read it on the Chinese daily Sin Chew Jit Poh. Since the restaurant is conviniently located at Petaling Jaya and we haven’t had “western food” for a while, I figured, why not? Surely Sin Chew didn’t review this place just because they want to save on transportation claims by the reporter.

typical decent kopitiam set up

6 to 10 Grill & Nasi Lemak has quite a selection of western food items on the menu, and of course, the nasi lemak. I ordered their claim of fame, the red wine lamb special, and the other noobs had grilled salmon and chicken chop. We didn’t bother to try the nasi lemak, I’ve read it was nothing special anyway.

mouth watering western food, look at the lamb, yum

The red wine lamb certainly took quite a while for them to serve, but when it came, it was a generous portion with 4 pieces of decent size lamb shoulder marinated to perfection. On it’s own they tasted pretty good, but to get the best taste, you will have to add the mint sauce that came with it. The tender texture with the hint of red wine, mixed with the lamb’s original taste and the extra dimension the mint sauce brought in, YUM!

I stole a taste of the grilled salmon, it was really good. The sauce was rich but not too overpowering, and the filet wasn’t overly grilled either. The chicken chop with black pepper sauce was pretty decent as well. But as chicken chop goes, there isn’t alot of things you can do to make it better.

the mint sauce does the trick, only bones left

The garnish and sides that came with the dishes weren’t exactly spectacular, only the usual “salad”, cucumber, lettuce, tomato, and fries. Next time I’m there, I’m gonna order the mixed grill, the pictures hanging on the wall looks great, with at least 3-4 types of meat and shrimps.. *drools*
