What’s better than spicy hot pot that goes in hot and comes out hotter? Well, unlimited refill at one fixed price, of course!
This is essentially what Fei Fan Hot Pot at Subang Courtyard offers, while I would have been a lot more excited about the prospect of buffetsteamboat/hotpot 20 years ago, I was still pretty excited about it when Carol suggested that we check it out.

We did, and as it turned out, we weren’t the only two who thought paying RM 45.90++ per pax to fill our stomach to the brim was a great idea.
There was about an hour’s wait before our turn, which led to me getting a hair cut, and Carol did her eyebrow.. or something.
Anyway, finally we got in at around 9 p.m. with the host ushering us to a shared table located at a semi-outdoor dining area, which worked out just fine to diffuse the steamboat smell while not being overly too warm since it’s pretty late at night. No complains from me other than it being a bit far from the buffet spread.

Fei Fan offers quite a decent selection of condiments with just over a dozen types of various spicy/salty/fresh “stuff” you can mix up. They include cili padi, raw garlic, green onion, cilantro, fermented tofu, soya sauce, chili paste, and more. With that many choices, you are probably bound to get overly excited and mess it up.
As for soup base, there are four to choose from, with a maximum of two choices – pork bone soup, pepper pig’s stomach soup, tomato soup, and spicy mala soup.
We went with pork bone & spicy mala, though I’ve heard good things about the other two types as well.

The way it works is like this – pick the ready-made items from buffet spread – including various types of vegetable, mushroom, balls, tofu, and so forth.
There’s also a self-ordering sheet that includes pork/chicken/beef balls, shrimp dumpling, chives dumpling, tofu pok with pork, fish noodle, and beef/chicken/pork slices, intestine, liver, and such. You can use the sheet multiple times but food wastage will be charged 20% of total bill, which I thought is fair.

What’s the verdict you may ask?
Well, Fei Fan Hot Pot certainly offers great value especially if you’re a big eater. The mala soup offers a good enough kick, while those pork bone soup was quite proper as well.
The meat slices might be a tad thin, but that also means they get cooked fast, and with unlimited order it’s not an issue anyway. I also like that there’s enough options for greens.
Overall it was a rather positive experience and I would certainly happy to go there again, but this time around I’d be sure to call ahead and make bookings.

Let’s continue with another Klang bak kut teh review since I said I was going to make it a bit of a mission to go to as many different bak kut teh in Klang as possible. So here’s BB Bak Kut Teh Garden at Bandar Baru Klang, located close to Bukit Raja Jusco and one of our favorite tai chao places in the area – Da Tuan Yuan.

BB bak kut teh garden often have moderate to even rather low review, and personally I think a lot of it has to do with how the place looks like. The setting is almost like a modern food court, with pictures, banners, and a menu that illustrates the price and exactly what you’ll be getting very clearly. This runs in contrast to most old school BKT places that expect you already know what you want.
Additionally, they also serve some non-BKT dishes, such as steamed fish, fried vegetable tofu, sea cucumber, and so forth. All of which gives this place a “less authentic” look.

But to be perfectly honest, I actually found the BKT pretty decent. A bowl (RM 10.50) or clay pot (RM 12.50) is right around the average asking price, though some reviews may suggest that this place is a little more expensive than others.
On our visit I had kahwan (right around the leg joint with plenty of fat & tendon) and intestine. They were properly tender and the soup too had a strong herbal flavor, tho perhaps not as complex tasting as some. I actually enjoyed it.
BKT meal, I’m happy
So don’t let the look of a place fools you. If a BKT place can survive in Klang, they’re usually pretty capable when it comes to taste. If you keep an objective mind, you’ll often not be disappointed.

One of my favorite types of comfort food is mixed pork porridge. A bowl of porridge with all the essential sinful ingredients and yet mild enough for a stomach that may not be in the best condition, it is really the quintessential comfort food.

Problem is, most of the stalls offering mixed pork porridge operates only in the afternoon or at night. In the afternoon, there’s seksyen 17 and SEApark, and at night, you can head to Jalan Sayur or Taman Cheras, but if you want it for breakfast, Imbi market is your answer.
Located right at the side that also houses the famous Ah Weng Koh Hainanese tea stall, this porridge stall also offers fish ball noodle and even curry noodle, hours are from around 7 in the morning till around noon everyday except on Mondays.

This version of mixed pork porridge has most of the essential ingredients on the list – crispy deep fried pork intestine, stomach, pork slices, pork tongue too (I believe). The only thing missing would be coagulated blood, but I shall forgive them for this since the overall taste is still rather good. The congee is smooth and more than delicious enough for breakfast.

Oh, when you’re there, be sure to order a glass of Hainanese tea to go with your breakfast.

Pork intestine porridge is also a dish that isn’t nearly as common these days as it used to be. I suspect this has something to do with the idea that pig innards aren’t exactly the healthiest thing out there, and younger generations are usually less familiar with them.
While being from a relatively “young” generation, I on the other hand, absolutely love them. I always believe that you can and should eat everything in moderation, and a little bit of innards now and then never hurt, especially if you have a balance diet and exercise on regular basis (everyone knows about this anyway..)

an unexpected find at restaurant Say Huat
Anyway, just the other day I found myself at Seksyen 17 having an hour to kill, so as a Penangite, the natural thing to do was to find a place to sit and eat, and that’s how I ended up at restaurant Say Huat, having Robert’s Char Kuih Teow in my mind.
My attention was drew to the porridge stall when I got there, and a glance on the menu confirmed that they serve pork intestine porridge – it was then I decided I gotta have this.

For RM 4.50, this is perhaps the most beautiful bowl of porridge you can get. The surface is completely covered with crispy deep fried pork intestine, yao char kuai, spring onion, and ginger. It was a work of art.

Inside there’s also chunks of pork (with soft bone), liver, and of course, the porridge that is topped with some soya sauce, pepper, and sesame oil. The texture of the congee was soft, smooth, and actually perhaps just slightly too thick.
Over all though, it was still a very decent bowl of good old pork intestine porridge, if you like it lighter, try the seapark version, but if you want it heavy, and not to mention excellent value for money, this one won’t disappoint.
Everyone has their favorite comfort food, the go-to dish that you would want to have after a long trip, or when you are feeling less than 100%. For me, it has to be porridge, and among the different variations of this dish, nothing beats a good bowl of pork intestine porridge.
Fortune favors those with a sense of adventure, and just a couple days ago while looking for something to fill my stomach between brunch and late dinner, I found myself at Kedai Kopi Khoong at Seapark. I sat my ass down and lo & behold: A pork intestine porridge stall! (well they also sell century egg porridge, raw fish porridge etc)

For RM 4.50, I got myself a slice of heaven for some 15 minutes, the intestine was crispy, the porridge flavorful, and those yummy bits you see in the photos above that aren’t intestines? Those are pork tongue, if you haven’t tried pork tongue, you need to!
The operators are an old couple, and very kind one at that. I actually dropped my wallet after gobbling up the porridge, but they kept it and return to me after I figured out my pockets was empty upon heading to the car.
