Back in Penang where I grew up as a kid, my family was pretty fond of fish heads. Our ingredient of choice is almost always a big garoupa head, and mom always prepare it with Nyonya style curry. This was actually the only way I knew how to enjoy fish head, that is until I came to KL and heard about steamed fish head.

After trying the pretty awesome version at Chong Yen steamed fish head at Chan Sow Lin, we’re going to take a look at Mun Kee Steamed Fish Head at Happy Garden.

According to Kerol, this is one of her aunt’s favorite place for dinner. There’s something like one in three chance that they dine at this place whenever she pays the family a visit.

Mun Kee is located at the appropriately named Jalan Lazat 1 (that’ll be Tasty Street 1 in English). The shop is sort of a food court set up with high roof but no walls, you’re sheltered from the elements somewhat, but there isn’t air conditioning any decoration to speak off. People are here strictly to eat.

The eatery gets pretty busy on weekends, so expect to wait a bit for an empty table. However, food doesn’t take overly long to get ready, so overall wait time is pretty bearable.

As with most steamed fish head in KL, the main ingredient is Soong fish, or Asian Carp. Calling it fish head is a bit of a lie, cos you do get almost half front portion of the fish instead of just the fish head as the Penangites do with our fish head curry.

At Mun Kee, there are 5 different preparation methods – Nyonya Steam, Assam Steam, Minced Ginger Steam, Black Bean Steam and Original Steam.

We’ve heard good things about the Nyonya steam but unfortunately they ran out of that when we were there, so we chose minced ginger steam and original steam for this session (RM 26 per dish).

The fish head were delightful, never over cooked and there wasn’t any trace of those pesky slight muddy taste that river fish tends to carry. The original steam is great for those who likes it a bit spicy with plenty of chili padi sprinkled on top, while the minced ginger steam provides the warmth from ginger that I find myself enjoy as well.

At Mun Kee, they aren’t only good with steamed fish.

Salted egg chicken (RM 24) is one of the must-order items. Imagine salted egg squid (like the one at Sing Kee Sungai Way) and KFC rolled into one. It’s a combination that works surprisingly well and we really liked it.

Home made tofu (RM 12) that we ordered came with crab meat and egg based broth that made excellent comfort food, and the green dragon vegetable (RM 12) dish provided good source of vitamin C and fiber just in case your mom asked. All in all a great combination of dishes for dinner.

One of my ingredients of all time is beef tendon. Soft, flavorful, addictive beef tendon. To me, beef tendon to beef is like bacon to pork, they are absolutely delicious little chunks of goodness.

Beef tendons are often found at beef noodle (both Vietnamese and local) versions, often is the keyword, they don’t necessarily have it, nor are they always prepared perfectly.

We came to Restaurant Sun Sea at OUG and stumbled upon this hawker stall that offers Sarawak noodle, fish head meehun, and stewed beef noodle. I didn’t think anything of it until I saw the little sign that says – beef tendon.

So we ordered two bowls – mine just tendon, and Haze had tripes and beef tendon in her version. Of course, you can have it with normal beef too, if you so choose to.

My beef tendon noodle (RM 5.50 or 6) and Haze’s beef tripes and tendon (RM 8) were prepared the Johor style –  clearer but flavorful soup that comes with little chunks of salted vegetable. Similar to Uncle Cheng’s special beef noodle.

This place did not disappoint, over all the soup was good, and most importantly, the tendon were soft and yummy. If you love beef tendons like me, you’ll like it.

While I do find that Uncle Cheng’s beef noodle (and the special tendon they sometimes carry) is slightly better than here, this place is quite a lot cheaper, and does not have the sometimes unpredictable operating hours like Uncle Cheng’s.

Best of all, the same kopitiam also serves one of the best Penang Curry Mee with coagulated blood, and a very decent pork noodle too.

My quest for the yummiest Penang Curry Mee continues, and this time it brought me to OUG at Sun Sea Kopitiam. To be honest, I found out about the curry mee here pretty much accidentally as we were wondering about at the area when Haze pointed out: “look here’s a Penang curry mee stall”

It took us the third try to catch it in time (Sunday by around noon), and it was worth it!

The curry mee at Sun Sea kopitiam is one of the few original Penang curry mee you can find (others are restaurant Okay, PJ SS2 & restaurant Good Food, PJ old town) that comes with coagulated pork blood. My aim is to find more of the same breed in Klang Valley and see how they measure up against some of the bests in Penang.

The curry mee came with tofu pok, a couple peeled prawns, almost-raw cockles (yums), cuttle fish, coagulated pork blood, and that all important chili paste with slightly charred taste. Everything, together with your choice of yellow noodle or meehun or the combination of both, was served in a santan based broth.

It was awesome, this version of curry mee at OUG is almost on par with my favorite one at restaurant Okay, and probably slightly edges the PJ Old Town’s shop. I love it.

It was in fact, good enough that Haze actually liked it (she usually merely tolerates curry mee). RM 4.50 per bowl, if you’re seeking for a bowl of good old fashion Penang curry mee, you can’t go wrong here.

The first time I had pork noodle at Sun Sea kopitiam at OUG was many years ago, it was probably a time before this blog was started, which placed it at.. say, at least 6-7 years ago.

Yesterday I went there again and had the pork noodle for the second time. To be honest, I actually wanted to try the curry mee at the same restaurant (Penang style with coagulated pork blood), but it we were a little too late. So naturally, I picked the pork noodle as my alternative.

We ordered a bowl of kuih teow soup, and another dried meehun + mee pork noodle.

The stall was plenty busy, but with 3-4 cooks and over half a dozen people working, the pork noodle didn’t take too long to arrive (as opposed to the basically one man show at the famous pork noodle at SS3 Kean Fatt).

Like the night time counter part at restaurant Hong Cha located just a stone’s throw away, the pork noodle here comes with not only the essential porky ingredients – liver, pork slices, minced meat, intestine, and lard, there are also the inclusion of some prawns and squids.

While I find that the seafood does add to the flavor of the soup, and the overall taste of the pork noodle too was rather good, I still think that the Kean Fatt’s version is just a little more flavorful and more “kao”. Then again, over here there’s the choice of having the dry version (that salted minced meat on top was superb), and the huge upside of being served quite a lot faster. (never go to Kean Fatt at peak hours, after 2 p.m. would be best)

We paid RM 5.50 per bowl at Sun Sea.

In addition, we also ordered two poh piah (RM 4) as a side dish from another stall, it was absolutely average and even slightly too dry. It was light years away from my favorite poh piah of all time at Jonker Street in Melaka, and quite a lot less tasty than the one at the pohpiah stall at Lucky Garden where you can also find very yummy laksa Sarawak.

Ah Loy Curry Mee is the second restaurant I frequent in the exploration of the popular food district that is OUG. This followed by the good experience I had at Hong Cha pork noodle, just a couple doors down the road on the same row of shop houses.

Being a huge fan of asam laksa, Haze didn’t make any surprising order. The Penang style laksa looked pretty good, came with chunks of fish, banana flower, onion, cucumber, mint leaves, and of course – har gow (蝦羔, prawn paste. RM 4.5).

Unlike the true blue Penang style, this serving’s rather huge. As for taste, well, I’d say it’s acceptable though I did not really like the texture of their laksa noodle, a bit too soggy for my liking, but over all an OK bowl of laksa nonetheless.

It’s not as good as the Jalan Pasar mini laksa (moved, anyone know where it is?), and a notch lower than the Kedah laksa at Alisan, SS4 too.

Then there’s my curry mee (some RM 7-8) that came with lotsa cockles, lala, squid, prawns, crab stick, tofu pok, and even some mushroom. The soup base was pretty thick and rather delicious too, I had mine with noodle and mee hun but you can ask for kueh teow or other noodles too.

While lacking huge prawns, mussels, or oysters, there’s plenty of other ingredients to make up for it, and certainly offers great value for the price you pay.

This place opens for lunch and dinner till pretty late (11pm). Parking can be a bit of a problem but that’s generally a fact in places with good hawker foods such as OUG. There’s also quite a lot of other selections of food at Ah Loy, including the curry pork ribs that I want to try next time!
