Several weeks ago, a bunch of us went for another lunch session that’s worth sharing, especially for those who work or stay near the East side of Klang Valley – Warisan Rasa Kuale (Ribu Ribu) at Medan Selera Taman Keramat. A place that serves up quite a good selection of local Malay dishes, and some awesome ikan bakar to boot.

Warisan Rasa Kuale is located at the food court right opposite Sapura building on Jalan Enggang at Taman Keramat. The stall itself is deep inside the food court and not visible from the street, you’ll have to walk some 20 meters in.

The food court is your typical medan selera with tables covered in laminated plastic, and plastic chairs that are usually good enough to barely hold the weight of average Malaysian. Hygiene isn’t top notch, but was acceptable.

The selling point of this stall is the choices of ikan bakar and the dishes they serve. There’s no less than half a dozen different fish to choose from, including siakap, tilapia, kembung, keli, bawal, caru, patin, and even salmon! Additionally, they also have grilled lamb and grilled prawn.

There’s also over a dozen different ulam to choose from. You want pegaga? petai? cherry tomato? bitter gourd? They’re all here.

Other than those grilled stuff and green stuff, there’s also a good selection of other dishes. There’s fish curry, sotong, several types of masakan lemak, there’s kangkung belacan too.

Overall the food quality was rather good, and we liked that they serve three different types of sambal with ulam. I particularly enjoy the ikan bawal bakar (RM 20) with it’s fatty flesh, as well as their grilled lamb (RM 7). Those are some of the must-order dishes if you’re there.

If you’re up to some awesome traditional Malay lunch not far from Keramat/Ampang area, this is quite a decent place to check out. Prices are quite reasonable for what you get too.

This is one of those write-ups that was somehow kept in the draft mode for way too long, but never late than never, and this is especially true when it comes to awesome food that can be enjoyed by everyone – so today, let’s talk about Ikan Bakar Adnan bin Hassan in Penang island.

To start with, you have to appreciate the location where Ikan Bakar Adnan bin Hassan is located. At the tail end of the island, you’ll have to travel for probably close to 45 mins to 1 hour from the heart of the island to reach this place, depending if you actually get lost or not.

The restaurant itself is of a medan selara sort of set up, and Adnan bin Hassan is the corner shop offering the most selection of any stalls there.

There are usually quite a few selection of seafood to be chosen from, ranging from siakap, kerapu, bawal, ikan merah, janahak, udang, and ketam. Price list is clearly stated on the wall as well, which is always helpful. The fishes are supposedly supplied by local fishermen.

I liked the way they fish is grilled here, split down the middle with ample sweet and positively hot sambal plastered within the center, and more spicy & sour sambal served on the side just in case you can and want to handle more hotness. The seafood was plenty fresh when we were there as well.

Squid from the neighboring stall wasn’t nearly as satisfying though, so choose your poison carefully.

For those of you who complained that there isn’t any halal food entry for Penang, here’s one yah! Happy dining!

Just a few days ago, I brought a Malay colleague to one of my favorite lunch hide outs in KL, the really old school and slightly run-down medan selera (DBKL food court) behind Fahrenheit 88. The initial plan was to order a plate of sotong halia and telur dadar for lunch, but as fate would have it, my favorite stall, Adik Tomyam, was not open for business.

I took a seat at the same far end of food court nonetheless (nearer to Lot 10), and this was when I discovered Gerai Cak Anam.

The stall is operated by a couple Indonesian ladies (I assume) and offers quite a few selections of Indonesian food – bakso, soto ayam, gulai kambing, rojak lontong, tempe + telor penyet, bebek (duck), lele (cat fish), ayam, belud (eel), babat (tripe), bandeng (milk fish), and ikan sardin to be exact.

That’s what the signboard says, but I also spotted some prawn fritters as well.

Being a fan of duck, naturally I ordered the bebek penyet. For RM 6 you get a plate of rice that’s enough to feed a fleet of construction crews, decent serving of deep fried duck (I’m not sure if it’s “flattened”), raw cabbage, cucumber, and sweet, spicy, and delicious sambal that I love.

The dish does turned out to be pretty good, which leave me wanting to try their other meat/fish choices next time. Halal duck meat isn’t something you find very often, so if you’re hungry for some, here’s a place to check out.

Gerai Cak Anam

For tourists, Bukit Bintang area is all glitz and glamour, with many shopping malls and world class hotels.

In those malls and hotels there are secret walkways to transport goods and workers hidden from customers. On a bigger scale, Bukit Bintang itself too have hidden back roads and walk ways that are not readily visible to tourists. This post is sourced from one such places.

Sandwiched between Jalan Imbi and Jalan Bukit Bintang just behind Fahrenheit 88 (previously known as KL Plaza), there is an old, beat up medan selera that have definitely seen better days. Most tables and chairs are in the state of disrepair, the place is not properly lit, and half the stalls aren’t even in operation. Nevertheless, there are usually groups of mostly Malay working class people lunching there.

I wandered into the food court on one hot afternoon. Most of the stalls offer nasi kandar, which I wasn’t particularly interested at the time, until I walked to the last stall – Adik Tomyam. The only stall that prepares food on order.

The menu are quite standard, there’s Malay style tomyam, beef, chicken, or seafood cook in paprik (spicy), merah (red sauce), halia (ginger), kunyit (turmeric) etc, and several types of fried rice and noodle too.

My first try was sotong halia (ginger squid) and a telur dadar (omelet with onion) to go with rice, and then I return a couple days later for ayam paprik (chicken with spicy sauce).

It was out of my expectation, and easily the best looking made-to-order Malay food from any medan selera I’ve had. There’s a host of ingredients in each dish. The sotong halia had squid, chili padi, cauliflower, fried onion, ginger, garlic, parsley, and more. Paprid ayam came with chicken, ginger, spring onion, onion, long bean, lime leaf, carrot, cauliflower, garlic, and more…

So you can imagine that even though they are a single dish, there’s a lot of variety in them, and the sauce tastes damn good too! Oh, best of all, with the telur dadar and rice, the meal was still only RM 5.50.

I’m gonna order their tomyam next time.
