Lot 10 is one of those shopping malls that has seen better times. Some 15 years ago, it was the premier place to shop, that was before Suria KLCC, before Mid Valley, and of course, before Pavilion.
These days, Lot 10 is keeping up with the newer malls by reinventing itself a little bit, starting with the excellent food court that is Hutong, and now, the Shabu One steamboat buffet restaurant. I’m not sure if that’s their strategy, but stuffing the mall with good food might just bring in the crowd.

Shabu One, the new steamboat place at Lot 10
I first got to know about this place from my colleague Sheng, who has a bit of a hobby in monitoring online group shopping deal sites. The dude brought 4 coupons to the Shabu One, so we headed over to Lot 10 for a Friday lunch without much expectations.
After all, the full price for lunch/dinner was only RM27.99+, and we had bought the coupons for something like another 40% off of that.

While the restaurant is certainly not very posh, it was clean and comfortable. If you’re looking for decorations the class of Shogun or Jogoya, this is not the place for you.
On the other hand, if you love steamboat with a good selection of seafood at reasonable price, this is the real deal!

There’re three types of soup to choose from: clear soup, tomyam, and ma-lak (嘛辣). We had our pot split between the ma-lak and clear soup.
To be honest, the ma-lak soup was a bit of a let down. The clear soup too was slightly bland, but nothing a bit of seafood (crab in this case) can’t fix. We didn’t try the tomyam soup, so I can’t commend on that.

The selection of food here is as good as anywhere else at this price point. I particularly love the super big clams they have on that day (not sure if it’s an everyday thing), along with the cuttle fish, lala, prawns, bamboo clams, and more. They are constantly being refilled too, which is always a plus.
Other than seafood you do get the usual suspects: plenty of fish ball lookalike and taste-alike stuff, big selection of vegetables, mushrooms, noodles, egg, and sliced beef.
There are also a buffet line of pre-cooked dishes such as fried noodle, curry chicken, hot and sour soup, sausages, tea leaf eggs and more so you can start stuffing your mouth from the get-go, before the steamboat is boiled.

As for desserts, the choices aren’t great. There’s ice cream, kuai leng gou, fruits, and a few other Chinese/Taiwanese jelly thingy. Then again, who has stomach for desserts when you go for steamboat?
Overall it’s a pretty decent place to go, pretty good value for what you have to pay, and I think we’ll be back again for some long lunches in the future.

When it comes to food courts within shopping malls in this country, Lot 10 Hutong wins my vote by a wide margin. It has a very unique (and sometimes confusing) layout and decoration, and most of the stalls are operated by “hawkers” who have established themselves in other places.
As a bonus, it is also one of the very few food courts that serves pork.

Ho Weng Kee at Lot 10 Hutong
Today, we’re gonna look at Ho Weng Kee at Hutong.
The original Ho Weng Kee at PJ SS2 serves some awesome wantan mee and really good fried dumpling. So I wanted to try this one and see if they are any good. I ordered their pork ribs noodle.
side note: Ho Weng Kee at SS 2 is now run by the former owner’s ex-staff, so still the great taste despite change of owner.

It only took a couple minutes for the pork ribs noodle to be ready. It costs me RM 8.35, a pretty good price considering the size of serving and the air conditioned, clean environment within a mall at Bukit Bintang.
The pork ribs were very tender, and the black bean sauce they made the ribs with were absolutely heaven. The noodle used were the same (thinner than usual) wantan noodle that soaks up the sauce readily. It was indeed very good.

The pork ribs noodle is also served with a bowl of soup, it was just like any almost tasteless wantan soup. That didn’t bother me, the noodle was good. I’m going to have it again.

I’ve been wanting to blog about this place for the longest time. First I went there without a camera, pictures taken with BB wasn’t good enough in that low light condition. On second trial, we were robbed before I transfer the photos from Haze‘s camera. So I guess 3rd time is the charm.

Lot 10 Hutong Food Court
After the recent renovation, Lot 10 Hutong became some sort of a minority in the food court business. The people from YTL (who owns Lot 10, Starhill, and others) managed to convince some of the best hawker foods around KL to operate at the once iconic mall’s basemen and keep to their original and traditional way.
This means that while there’s a definite upgrade in hygiene and ambiance, the foods’ still prepared with original recipe, down to using charcoal fire, if it was originally cooked with charcoal.
And oh, a lot of the food stalls are non-halal.

Soong Kee beef noodle set for RM 8.90
I was recommended over twitter (follow me @kyspeaks) to try the Soong Kee beef noodle the first time I stepped into the newly renovated food court. I’ve never been to the original shop at Pudu, but after having this several times, I’m convinced it is on par with one of my other favorites – Ngau Kei at Tengkat Tong Shin.
A set of beef noodle + mixed beef soup + oily vegetable + chinese tea goes for only RM 8.90. For KL pricing that’s practically a steal, and this is in a fully air conditioned and comfortable dining location. Bravo to Lot 10 for pulling this off. Of course, you can also order ala carte for cheaper, but I almost always go for the set.

The bowl comes with beef balls, meat, and tripes all soaked in savory broth. However, the best part has got to be the generous amount of minced meat on top of the noodle and oily vegetable. They are actually minced pork! yums!
While Soong Kee serves decent chili sauce to go with the beef noodle, I still favor the version at Ngau Kei simply because it packs more kick and has actual chili texture. The Soong Kee’s version is just a bit like bottled chili sauce.

At the end, both places has their pros & cons. Soong Kee at Hutong Lot 10 wins in cleanliness, comfort, and offer great value with their set; Ngau Kei has better chili sauce and serves beef tendon, and opens pretty much around the clock. Take your pick.
