Steamboat places are aplenty all over Klang Valley, so when it comes to picking one out for dinner during rainy days, it can be a little challenging. The rule of thumb for most people is that the place must be busy, for me, I usually rely on recommendations from friends instead, which was how I got to Dian Huo Xin Wo Steamboat at Kelana Jaya a couple weeks ago.

This steamboat restaurant is a little bit different from others when it comes to the interior decoration. At first glance, the place looks like a hipster cafe with old typewriter, TV, charcoal iron, and all those sort of memorabilias from yesteryears. Look closer, and you’ll find the built in stove in every table.

Instead of electric stove or steamboat pot utilized at some places such as Bone & Pot, Dian Huo Xin Wo opts for the traditional gas stove, which I prefer as it is a lot more responsive. Their solution is by placing a gas tank right under each table, I’m not entirely sure if this is the safest manner, but it works pretty well.
For a smallish shop, the menu is pretty comprehensive. There’s more than enough different fish balls (even one with quail eggs inside), meatballs, sliced meat, innards, vegetables, and starters (try the salmon skin) to go around. The “balls” are self-made and pretty good in size, which we enjoyed.

You’re allowed to choose up to two different soup base for a single pot. We tried the herbal black chicken soup and their signature soup, both broth were plenty flavorful in itself, and of course, refillable whenever running low. There’s also tomyam soup if you fancy something spicy, though I usually prefer sticking with traditional soup base for steamboat.
Condiments in this place doesn’t impress much, there’s 3 different types of chili paste, and you can ask for chili padi, but that’s about it, no fancy fermented beancurd or fried shallot oil, but they are, I guess, sufficient.
The meal came to be about RM 40+ per person, which is in line with most quality air conditioned steamboat meals.

Steamboat has traditionally been a pretty strong branch of Chinese cuisine in KL. It is something that can be very simple, like just ordering a couple sets, or you can go wild with a bunch of friends by having fancy seafood, meat, and everything in between.
Being the type of dish that is rather mature, how do you have a new steamboat place that everyone wants to go?
Well, The Pot at Kuchai Entrepreneur Park found the answer, and we loved it!

The Pot is the new kid on the block at Kuchai Lama, and like any shops at Kuchai Entrepreneurs Park, parking can sometimes be a bit of a challenge, even for a restaurant that is situated at a corner premise closer to the main road.
The restaurant is fully air conditioned, so you don’t need to go there only when it rains, which is nice. In fact, all steamboat places not at Cameron Highland should have climate control if you ask me.
Alaskan Crab, 1.5kg or so for RM 155
The unique thing about The Pot Steamboat is the glorious Alaskan Crab. For RM 155 at about 1.5KG, you get this beautiful crustacean served on a plate ready to be boiled in the steamboat soup and thereby making the broth ever so sweet.
While looking totally bad ass, the shell isn’t actually very hard and can be cut with a pair of culinary scissors to reveal those awesome meat fairly easily. This is a must-order and I believe more than half the tables at The Pot has an Alaskan Crab.

Other than Alaskan crab, the other pretty unique underwater creature they have is fresh geoduck (pronounced as “gooey duck”, thanks Suan!), the rather phallic looking salt water clam that can be eaten either raw (sashimi style) or just lightly blanched for about 2-3 seconds in steamboat soup.
Fresh geoduck isn’t cheap, the serving we had came up to be about RM 200, though it usually cost more in other seafood restaurants. The innards and other parts of the geoduck is also provided at the end of our meal to be boiled with leftover steamboat broth and rice, making a sort of clam innards porridge. This you gotta try to appreciate it.

Of course, as any steamboat place, there’s a host of other dishes to choose from to go with the three types of soup base they serve (sang yu pot, supreme clear soup, drunken wine soup).
The steamboat set goes for RM 17.80 (min 2 pax per table) and on top of that there’s a selection of live seafood from the aquarium that includes prawns, crab, frogs, giant clams, and so forth. Then there’s pork ball, fish ball, meat slices, chicken, mushroom, fungus, and even smoked duck (RM 7.90).

We had a pretty good time at The Pot and I reckon it is certainly a place you should consider if you’re looking to share a pot steamboat with friends and family while looking at some decent seafood offerings. Traffic and parking situation isn’t ideal, but then again sometimes we can’t ask for everything.

I picked up mountain biking lately, which turned into a wonderful hobby that involves a lot of calorie burning that enables even more calorie intake right after every weekend session in the trails, and it was one of these sessions that brought us to this relatively new restaurant at Aman Suria area – Kah Foong Pork Shoppe

To be honest, the only reason we ended up at the place was due to the fact that Famous Seremban Favorites, the restaurant that serves one of the best charsiu in town, was far too packed, and Kah Foong happened to be located just a few shops down.
The menu promises pork, so if we can’t have charsiu, why not some other type of pork, right?
As it turned out, the decision was a wise one.

The menu at Kah Foong is pretty simple, with about half a dozen different types of noodle and rice dishes to choose from. Most of them involves either soft bone, slice squid, pork ball, minced pork, pork belly, or a combination of those ingredients.
I tried the soft bone with slice squid (RM 7) and was delighted at how awesome both the ingredients were. The pork with tendon that melts in you rmouth, and the squid slices so packed with seafood sweetness we ended up ordering a few more portions on the side. I was impartial with those thick meesuah (personal preference) but I believe thinner version is available as well.

Pork ball here did not disappoint either, and the friends who ordered mushroom minced pork mee (RM 7) gave the dish a favorable review as well.
Additionally, Kah Foong also sell other pork products that you can take home to your own kitchen. I have a feeling that this shop will certainly stay, the food is pretty good, the price is right, and if they can only speed up their service just a little, we’ll have a long term winner.

I may not be a huge whisky drinker, but I do enjoy an occasional glass or three, so when I was invited to join The Glenlivet Guardians in one of their tasting sessions, I agreed immediately.
The Guardian program often hosts members-only access to private tastings, limited edition releases, exclusive downloads and invitations to unique events, this was one of such events held at Barn Thai, Plaza 33.

The invitation simply states “A mystery to taste” – join us to unlock the secrets of a truly rare and enigmatic single malt with your senses in the dark. We really didn’t know what to expect at first.

As it turned out, we were treated with Glenlivet Alpha, a limited release by Master Distiller Alan Winchester with only 3,350 bottles in the world, 42 of which allocated to Malaysia.

On the night of this event, we consumed 3 of the 42 bottles. The whisky has been matured in ‘first-fill Scotch whisky casks; that is ones that had only previously held Scotch, without any prior influence of Bourbon or sherry. There isn’t any other information available on the Alpha except the 50% alcohol strength.

We put up our blind folds and started tasting the whisky, removing the sense of sight to put more weight on the sense of smell and taste. The Glenlivet Alpha has a somewhat subtle but fruity nose, with orange, cherry, and a bit of a toffee tinge. On the palate it is smooth and supple, with more fruit and a trace of almond and cloves.
We certainly enjoyed it a lot, having kept asking the wonderful servers to keep the glasses coming, and it was so good that one of my friends immediately have two bottles booked, although I’m not allowed to disclose his name lest his wife complains.
Thanks to the good people at ROYCE, I got my hands on a few limited edition chocolates slated for their upcoming ROYCE Maccha Fair (available from 1st August, 2013 for limited time) a short while ago. Since Lance invited us for his almost-birthday BBQ party at Genting last week, I took the opportunity to bring those chocolates some 1000 meters above sea level for sharing.

I’ve previously wrote an entry on ROYCE chocolate and was impressed with the quality of this chocolate maker from Hokkaido, therefore I was quite keen to sample this latest offering.
While many choose to buy chocolates in duty free shops, ROYCE is one of the very few brands that have their outlets in various malls around Klang Valley (check location here), offering a wide range of chocolate products.
To me, the only downside is that they don’t serve coffee on location since these two goes so well together.

Anyway, lets talk about these Maccha Fair chocolates.
The Maccha Almond chocolate is pretty self explanatory. Roasted almond coated with green tea flavoured chocolate on the outside. There is something about nuts that always goes well with chocolates, and I think this goes extremely well with beer too.
Lance & Haze with ROYCE’s Prafeuille Chocolat
ROYCE’s Prafeuille Chocolat made by having fragrant green tea sauce sandwiched between light-textured chocolate and mixed with powdered green tea leaves. A box of this contains 30 pieces of chocolates, all individually wrapped.
The taste of green tea is very strong and suppresses the aroma of chocolate somewhat. Whisky did not go well with this, but I believe coffee would be lovely. Kinda reminds me of those minty chocolates you get for Christmas, except this one tastes a whole lot better. Perfect for those who loves green tea, but if you just want the taste of chocolates, this might not suit.

Then there’s the Nama chocolate, ROYCE’s most famed product. This is one of the smoothest and tastiest chocolate you can get. Laced with a hint of liquor with perfect balance between the aroma of green tea and fragrances of chocolate, this was pretty much everyone’s favorite of the night, including myself.
If calorie intake and money isn’t a problem, I want ROYCE Nama chocolate to be in my fridge at all time. So good!

it was Lance’s birthday BBQ celebration, did it like a rock star
Well, the chocolate was just desserts for this awesome BBQ party that we had. Lance made us plenty of awesome BBQ goodness, which includes lamb rack, steak, bacon, mushroom with cheese, chicken, salad, clam chowder, and more.
The birthday cake for the boy was a pavlova cake from Alexis at Bangsar, which is of course, one of the best pavlova cakes you can get (Serai serves pretty good pavlova too).

Mike’s job for the night was handling all the alcohol related drinks since Ahfa was unable to join us on to night. We had great fun as always, and as always, looking forward to the next session!
