Some of you who has been following this site for a while know that I have a certain soft spot for coagulated pork blood, pork kidney, and bitter gourd, so when I found out that there’s a stall that happens to offer all these ingredients in one dish, I just had to try it.

The said stall is the appropriately named Bitter Gourd Soup with Rice/Mee, located at the right side of the popular food court if you’re going in from the main entrance. of Taman Megah Ming Tien

Update: Ming Tien has since moved to Bandar Utama

The formula here is pretty simple, choose from the various (mostly) pork ingredients and the operator will boil them together with bitter gourd soup, you can then consume your loot with rice or your choice of noodle.

Among the ingredients to choose from are intestine, coagulated blood, pork slices, fried pork skin, kidney, liver, fuchuk (soya skin), tofu, meat balls, fish balls, and fish cakes.

I usually gets a bit carried away when ordering from here. My typical bowl of bitter gourd soup includes at least blood, kidney, tofu, meat, pork skin, and sometimes more. You should always attack the kidney/liver first as they may tend to get overcooked if being left too long. I would like the coagulated blood here to be slightly softer, but that’s just nitpicking.

A bowl of bitter gourd soup here goes from just above RM 6 to over RM 10 depending on what you put inside. Worth it? Yes!

The stall operates till pretty late at night.

The area behind Berjaya Times Square is a bit of a time capsule in one of the busiest part of KL. Activities usually starts at around 7:30 in the morning, with various old school restaurants (aka coffee shops) serving breakfast to the early risers.

One of the busiest restaurants at the area is Kedai Kopi Yuyi located at Jalan Brunei, a coffee shop I have the privilege of visiting quite a number of occasions.

Whenever in a kopitiam I’m not familiar, my instinct always tell me to order from the busiest stall, which in this case, it’s the pork noodle.

Wait time is actually quite substantial and can be up to 20+ minutes even in the early mornings, but the resulting pork noodle is quite excellent – there’s pork blood, liver, kidney, minced pork ball, intestine, and pork slices; basically everything you could ask for in a bowl of pork noodle. To top it off, the broth is very sweet & savory as well. I love it.

The pork noodle goes for RM 6 per bowl and you can choose from meehun, meesuah, mee, or vits noodle. Happy eating!

Of the many pork spare parts that are available, my favorite would be pork kidney.

You can often find pork liver, intestine, and stomach, but unfortunately, mainly due to the difficulties in preparation, there aren’t too many places that offers kidney these days.

Luckily, tucked at this less glamourous corner of Jalan Imbi is the restaurant Win Heng Seng with a very busy pork noodle stall that serves just what I look for. Awesome bowl of pork noodle with all the good stuff, includingliver, intestine, pork slices, minced pork ball, and of course, the very slurp worthy pork kidney.

The above bowl of pork noodle cost RM 8, only because I asked for extra pork liver.

I mean, look at it, does it not call your name? The texture of pork kidney, contrast with the slightly rougher liver, and the more exquisite intestine.. and then there’s those pork slices, all in sweet savory soup. With a little bit of vegetable to  give you that nice coloration too.

Heaven!

The pork noodle comes with kueh teow, lou she fun, mee hun, or mee. There’s also dried version available as well. If you feel suicidal, feel free to ask for extra lard.

Expect a relatively long waiting time over lunch. And yah, the kopitiam is hot and not at all comfortable, but the pork noodle with be worth it. 😀
