We officially moved into our KEN Rimba home a little over a year ago after going through the obligatory renovation period putting in our own touches to dress up the house the way we wanted it. We bought the house after learning about the project via an engagement with the developer for this write up on Sustainable Living at KEN Rimba a few years back.

One of the reasons we chose a corner unit is that we had wanted to make full use of the additional land on the side. The photo above is how our almost completed (pending lights) garden looks like as of current.
If you remember my Grow Your Own Herbs and Vegetable post from earlier of the year, you’d have noticed that our garden looks quite a bit different since then.

The first version of the garden was a temporary solution. After a pretty long process of coming up with a design we both like, revamping was in progress by April.
We removed the grass, and started with putting in some railway sleepers as a curvy walking path to the pool area.
Then it was installation of power cables for lights later, and water piping for automatic irrigation system. Red bricks were used to mark the borders of walkways next.

Then we installed some posts and started building the water feature with red bricks and concrete. This is the part that took the longest and also most labour intensive.
Waterproofing it alone took weeks of trials and re-applying even more water proofing agent. Luckily we got it all sorted out, the installation serves as a water planter as well as the filter for our koi pond.
We then procured some galvanised fencing and installed them to let creepers a wall to climb. We then installed the piping for the water planter and it was complete!
The whole project took slightly over four months as we worked mostly only during weekends afternoon. Everything was done by myself and Haze with zero hired help.

We’re really happy on how it turns out, I think it’ll look much better at night when the lights are installed.
That’s how we utilised the 20 feet of land on the side. A pond, a pool, and now a proper garden.

If you have your own 20 feet of land, what would you do with it?
The good news is, there are still corner units available at KEN Rimba, some of which comes with swimming pools as well.
Having a pool really gives the house that villa ambience, and it is also a pool that you don’t need to share with strangers.

The corner units also come with extra two feet’s width in built up compared to intermediate units. There are three rooms upstairs and one on the ground floor. Enough for a family of 7 comfortably if you really want to maximise bed space, or use one as a study, a guestroom, or like us, a game/AV room.

Every unit also comes with green features such as rain water harvesting tank. For corner units, that comes in really handy in watering your garden. We used ours to keep the koi pond filled up with rain water instead of tap water. I’ve yet to get a water bill at KEN Rimba.
Landscaping around the neighbourhood is well kept and it’ll get even better when the trees grow taller/bigger.

Time for a topic that is slightly different from the usual food related articles.
We’ve received vacant posession to our KEN Rimba house at Shah Alam several months ago, and been busy doing defects and renovation work ever since. There are a few more weeks work to be done before we can probably move in and call it our new home, so I thought it’s best to start documenting some of the stuff we’ve done to the house on this space so that we can reflect in years to come.
First off, the koi pond.

I have been keeping koi fish for some ten years at the current SS3 address from a pond Horng and I constructed in 2005. We’re moving, the fish has to come along, so a new pond is needed.
Since the developer promised to put in a small pool to the unit, I took the opportunity to commission the same backhoe loader to dig the pond. It was to be a 14′ x 6′ x 5′ deep pond. Digging and timber piling work was done in early March.

Reinforced concrete were then poured to the make the foundation of the pond, which resides at the rear end of the yard just a few feed by the fiber glass pool.
We decided to hire foreign workers (Nepalese & Bangladeshi mostly) to build the brick wall for the pond. The joints were interlocked and rebar used to ensure structure integrity. I also decided that 2 layers of bricks is laid as per Sheng’s advise, who is a structural engineer by profession. (Thanks)
We also laid some PVC pipes for drainage & filtration system at this point.
This stage took about 3 weeks, with work mostly done either only on Sunday or off hours.

Next, we got a couple of Indonesian workers to help plaster the walls. Man, these guys worked fast and I reckon they were at least twice as efficient as the previous guys. We got the walls plastered in two days.
Haze and I then spent several weeks applying a couple layers of waterproofing agent on the pond. We used Nippon Flexiseal for this application.
In retrospect, we should have applied waterproofing measures while pouring concrete and making brick walls, oh well.

Since the house came with rain water harvesting tank at the rear, I decided to take advantage of it by connecting a pipe and run it to the pond. What’s better than natural rain water for the fish?
At this point, we also discovered that the first round waterproofing was not good. To rectify this, we use a Sika grout product as per recommended by my cousin who is in construction industry. Thankfully, we managed to solve the leakage problem with a little bit of creative workaround.

I’ve then temporarily hooked up the Laguna Powerflo Filter Fall to try to let it mature a little bit. Local guppies are now thriving in the pond to prevent it being a mosquito breeding ground.
This filtration system is chosen due to the ease maintenance. I purchased this from Sunway Mas Commercial Centre’s Fish Depot, they are very helpful and I urge you to check them out should you have any aquarium supply needs.
Other aspects of the house will be updated on this space soon, as well as the second part of this koi pond story with the way filtration system is set up.
Back in January 2013, I wrote about KEN Rimba township at Seksyen 16, Shah Alam. At the time we visited the LEGIAN Residences and talked about the then upcoming JIMBARAN Residences. I was so impressed with the development that I ended up the first person to buy a unit of JIMBARAN Residences not long after.
Now, KEN launches KEN Rimba Condominium 1 the first high-rise residential development within the same multiple awards winning KEN RIMBA Township.

For those who’re not familiar with KEN Rimba. The township is situated at Seksyen 16, Shah Alam, just a mere 1 kilometer away from the Padang Jawa/iCity intersection on Federal Highway.
The township also has a covered walkway to the Padang Jawa KTM station situated some 700 meters away, or about 10 minutes on foot.
As a bonus for those who love bak kut teh, a 5 minutes drive will get you to Weng Heong and Teluk Pulai bak kut teh. This might have influenced my decision to move to the township. 🙂
Ken Rimba Condominium 1 and Pool Villa
Together with 328 units of LEGIAN Residences and 168 units of JIMBARAN Residences, KEN Rimba Condominium 1 comprises 637 units of condominium at 1119 sq. ft. and 1183 sq. ft. as well as 16 units of penthouses (4 for block A & C, 8 for block B) and 26 units of pool villas.
The condominium is priced from RM 399,000, or from RM 357 per square foot, making it a pretty attractive prospect for first time homebuyers.
As you can see from the scaled model in the photo above, the condominium is located next to the JIMBARAN Residences, and right behind a the KEN Rimba Commercial Centre. The 109 units of commercial centre will make serve as vibrant part of the whole community, offering convenience to residents in the township.

We visited the show unit of the condominium located at KEN Rimba recently.
The design of the unit is pragmatic and make good use of space. The living room and dining area greets homeowners as you step into the unit, with a balcony opposing the entrance door that promotes air circulation and maximizes inflow of daylight. To the side is a pretty decent size kitchen that connects to the washing/drying area.

The first room (closest to living hall) is the smaller of the three rooms that is suitable for kids. Sam C.S. Tan, KEN Holdings’ group managing director, explained that they took into consideration that the width of the room must be wide enough to accommodate the length of a standard size bed. I also particularly like the huge windows for the room.
Second room is slightly larger and can easily accommodate a queen size bed and other furnishing. These two rooms share a bathroom located opposite the rooms’ doors.
I actually like this arrangement as guests don’t have to go into your room just to use the bathroom, and not having it in between the two rooms also make for much easier furniture arrangement since the rooms are now in simple rectangular layout.

Next up is the master bedroom, this is the biggest room in the unit and come with an attached bathroom as well. Like the previous two rooms, there’s also the huge windows by the side that takes advantage of the daylight.

The picture of the scale model above gives you an idea of how the floor plan is like for KEN Rimba Condominium 1. Each floor comprises of 8 units, with either the pool view or the i-City view. Each block is served by 3 elevators.
There are three blocks altogether and they are connected to the same covered carpark with the facilities floor on top.

For those who want something more special, there’s also a limited units of pool villas.
I really love the concept of the pool villa. It is basically built almost like a 2.5 storey terrace house. You park your cars at the covered car park right in front of your own unit’s lower floor, walk up the stairs and get to the living area, kitchen, and dining hall that has direct access to the facilities floor.
The three spacious bedrooms are located on the top floor of the villa and has balcony overlooking the facilities floor as well. Get one right next to the pool and you are basically living the vacation life everyday. Very cool concept, the pool villa has a built up area of approximately 2,600 sq. ft.
The pool villas are priced from RM 800,000, or RM 306 psf.

On the facilities floor of KEN Rimba Condominium 1, there’s a full Olympic length swimming pool (50 meter), a kid’s pool, badminton hall covered with greenery, gymnasium, reading area, children’s playground, community park, multipurpose hall, and cabanas too.
