    KY eats – MiniSnack

Once in a while when I feel like I have to indulge myself with some awesome snacks, I’ll go to the 3rd floor of Isetan KLCC where they sell a variety of not-exactly-cheap, but very good imported snacks.

Snacks that I’ve tried from there includes the irresistible Keebler’s chocolate chip cookies and the oddly named Hello Panda biscuits. But today, lets talk about the delicious European snack – MiniSnack!

    MiniSnack from Isetan
    crunchy and creamy, slurps

I’m not exactly sure where this snack comes from, the name MiniSnack isn’t exactly very meaningful. However, the Sfoglia ripiena blah blah blah description seems to be Italian. Why do I care anyway, so long as this stuff tastes good, right?

    MiniSnack from Isetan
    hazelnut flavor, best

This thing costs almost RM8 per packet, and contains “6 puff pastry rolls filled with hazelnut cream” or cream flavor. Biting down this snack is pure heaven, the roll is crunchy and pretty light, while the fillings is creamy and heavy, tasted almost like melted chocolate with strong hazelnut flavor. The skin actually has a similar texture with Him Heang tambun biscuit.

RM 8 for 6 of these isn’t exactly cheap, considering I could finish the whole pack in one sitting, but the flavor is just so great. Last I had one these was quite a while ago, I think I’ll have to go to Isetan tomorrow!

KY eats – Hokkaido Fest at Isetan, big discount!

I wrote about the excellent Ikura Hotate don I had during Isetan’s Hokkaido Fest last year. Well, it’s November again and Isetan is running their annual Hokkaido Fest for the first half of this month, and well, I just had to have the Ikura Hotate don again.

Hokkaido Fest at Isetan, Ikura Hotate don
excellent sushi at good price (after 8:30pm)

However, as my wallet is not a reverse black hole, and the price of that item stays at the same RM 39.90, I wasn’t able to afford it for lunch. Then again, there’s always a trick. Thanks to Joe who left a comment informing me of Isetan’s late evening Sushi deal, I had a chance to fix the craving.

You see, after 8pm, there is a 30% off for all Sushi products, and a 50% discount after 8:30pm. This include items offered in the Hokkaido Fest that is running till the 15th of this month too!

    Ikura (salmon roe)… *droolssss*

I bought my Hotate Ikura don and a Salmon Oyako don for the house mate. Altogether less than RM 40 for both after discount. It was one of the best take-away dinner I’ve ever had. If you work late at KLCC anytime before the 15th of the month, don’t miss out the chance!

KY eats – Doraemon’s favorite Dorayaki

Many of us who grew up reading or watching the old school Japanese anime Doraemon would be familiar with dorayaki, the earless robotic cat from future’s favorite snack. However, I am sure that most of you noobs have never saw one in real life, less tasted it. Hence when I got to know that the Sun Moulin Bakery in Isetan KLCC carries the snack, I just had to try it.

    Dorayaki, Doraemon's favorite
    robotic cat’s favorite snack

The snack costs RM 2.40 a piece, and true to what the comic depicts, is served cold. Dorayaki is basically Japan’s answer to the familiar chinese red bean pao, with two layers of soft pancake is used to sandwich the paste together. Overall the taste was pretty good, though it takes a little getting used to having red bean paste cold, which made the texture a little harder than what I am familiar with.

If you are/were a fan of Doraemon, you gotta try this. Sun Moulin also serves some of the best breads and sponge cakes, though the price is generally slightly higher than average. On the other hand, if your childhood is associated with Sponge Bob and Powerpuff Girls, you are probably too young to read some of the entries here, go do your homework already!

As a bonus, here is the link to Doraemon theme song lyrics, in Japanese romanji with English translation too!

KY eats – Korean Food Fair at Isetan

The area right besides the 3rd floor escalator in Isetan KLCC often has special festivals or fairs around the year, some months ago there was the Hokkaido fest, and this afternoon when I was there, the Korean Food Fair was at full swing, running from 26th of May till 13th June.

    Korean Food Fair
Korean food fair with lotsa crap to spend money on

They have alot of food stuff for sale. You can get the instant Ginseng Chicken soup with the whole chicken come in the pack (I think Jogoya serves this too), Korean instant noodle, fresh kimchi, Korean green tea, confectionaries, drinks, and so forth. As do most things from Isetan, the price isn’t cheap, but most of the items do look great.

Korean Food Fair - Glass noodle
    this stuff is good

At the fresh food section, they were offering dumplings (5 for 8 bucks), and glass noodle. Since I was planning to ‘tarpao’ lunch anyway, I paid RM 9 for the glass noodle. Pretty pricey, but just to try once, what the heck.. I remember the glass noodle I had at the Ampang Korean BBQ was really good.

The glass noodle itself is imported from Korea, tastes slightly different from the local variety, thicker in texture and somewhat firmer, but you’ll still recognise it as glass noodle. The ingredients were red and yellow bell pepper, carrot, imitation crab meat, onion, green onion, and two types of mushroom.

I must say that the flavor was pretty good, however, 9 bucks is a bit too steep. Maybe I’ll get some instant noodle from there to stock up my food drawer in the office.

KY eats – Unadon & Soft Shell Crab from Isetan

One of my favorite places for take-out, ready-to-eat food is the Isetan supermarket at KLCC. Some of you might have read about the sushi and the Hokkaido Fest bento. But if you are one of those who aren’t exactly into raw food just yet, there are other choices too, such as various types of rice bowls, onigiri, bbq meat, and so forth.

Unadon & Soft Shell Crab from Isetan
    appetizing, no?

Now I love unagi (grilled eel) and soft shell crab, and Isetan supermarket has them on the shelve. At RM 16.90 for unadon (unagi, rice, egg) and around RM 5 for a big size soft shell crab, this isn’t exactly an economical solution for a take-out lunch, but the taste doesn’t dissapoint. Do know that you can ask the staff to microwave the rice bowls before paying. This way you can have it ready to eat even if your office doesn’t have a microwave, or that you want to eat in the car, by the fountain at the park, or in the LRT (don’t get caught).

Unadon & Soft Shell Crab from Isetan
    crabs… yumm..

The unadon is made with proper Japanese rice cooked sticky, like how they’re supposed to. A layer of onion egg with light dark sauce, half a grilled eel on top, and a couple slices of pickled radish on the side to complete the bowl. The taste was pretty good, on par with most restaurant offerings, though you must be careful to not overheat or underheat them in the microwave. As for the soft shell crab, well, it tastes like how you would expect soft shell crabs to taste like.

Unadon & Soft Shell Crab from Isetan
    not exactly cheap, but. .

If you are new to Japanese food and don’t want to humiliate yourself and (possibly) your wallet in a nice Japanese restaurant, give these take-outs a try.
